I was blown away recently when I read this on some one’s Facebook status:
I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954)
The fact that they were quoting Albert Einstein’s denial of God’s existence also verified their own question of His existence. There were many rebukes and loving exhortations from Christian friends concerning his doubt.
My response has been a broken heart for this young person. I have prayed much for them to come back to the Lord. It’s made me so very aware that in this day men will wax worse and worse until the Lord comes back. (II Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.) It certainly is seen everywhere a person turns! People you would have never thought would turn away from the Lord are committing heinous sins. Christians are held in strongholds of drugs and alcohol. Believers who were once faithful are full of accusations and excuses instead of love and devotion for their God, their local church and other believers.
What does this do to God? It does not move Him from being merciful and loving! It does not make Him take back His promises to us! Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me. He continues to give strength even to those that scoff at His name. They are breathing the air that God created! However, they cannot continue in their sin unnoticed or uncorrected by God because He is a just God. Verse 7 says, I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. The evil spoken of here is not sin – God is not the author of sin. This is referring to the sorrow, adversity and calamities that come as a result of our sin. Just as God could not allow Adam and Eve to continue in their sin forever and therefore, set an angel before the Tree of Life, God will not allow us to continue in our sin either. He will send our consequence.
For those that deny His existence and scoff at His name, verse 24 goes on to say, all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. One day all those “Albert Einstein’s” will hang their head in shame before the God they denied.
As I read these verses yesterday it was a reminder to me to ask the Lord to keep my heart tender, lest I, too, fall. Every day you and I must make a choice to spend time with the Lord in His Word, hearing from Him – enjoying that “living room intimacy.” We must pour out our hearts in prayer for our own spiritual protection and for that of those around us, lest we be one of those that are deceived.
Let’s make it our prayer to remain faithful, and also to encourage others to stay the course. Surely “the coming of the Lord draweth nigh!”
