Easing Household Chores: 8 Strategies for a Better Attitude

This week I started the Maytag, Messes and Meals series here on my blog. Since then, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I go about my responsibilities and work at having a right heart while doing them. Yes, I must work at that!

To be honest, this week when I attacked our PILE of dirty clothes after being gone for nearly a week, I started to moan inwardly. Then the Spirit of God brought to my mind how thankful I could be that I was now home and able to do laundry. Oh, that changed my attitude!!

There are simple methods we can employ to make all the work we do in the home sweeter and even easier. I’ve tried to be mindful this week about what those strategies are. Here’s my list that is truly helpful to me. I hope it helps you, too!

  1. Check my heart. As I mentioned in the opening paragraphs, I have to be vigilant about my attitude. If it goes south, it’s not going to be a good day at the Cunningham’s house! If I detect a wrong spirit, I pray and ask God to give me his heart for my home. It changes everything!
  2. Work when I have the most energy. For me that means in the morning, after I’ve had my Bible reading and have gotten ready for the day.
  3. Do the most difficult/biggest chores first. That might mean starting the laundry or mopping the floors.
  4. Work ahead. This is mostly referencing meal prep. If I get things rolling for our supper meal early in the day or right after lunch, I feel so much better about finishing things up. That means I might prep veggies, get potatoes ready to bake, or put something in the crock pot.
  5. Take a short rest. If I’m tired I will rest for 15-20 minutes and that’s all I need to be powered for the rest of the day!
  6. Plan for something fun after tasks. This might be sewing, watercolor or redoing an area of my home for the season.
  7. Spread the tasks out over the week. There’s no need to try to get it all done in one day. While there are some things that are done daily (like cleaning the bathrooms), most things can be spread out through each week.
  8. Make sure the house is tidy before going to bed. I like to make sure the dish drainer is empty before retiring, clothes are put away, and there’s no clutter anywhere. There’s nothing like waking up to a clean house!

This week on my Instagram, I’m going to focus on sharing household helps/ideas that make my work easier. You can check that out this week, if you need some encouragement!
