We love a steak cooked on the grill! How about you? It’s juicy, flavorful and easy. Sometimes, however, things happen that keep the gas grill from being the best way to cook the meat. The weather can interfere and sometimes the propane tank is empty with no time to run to get a refill. It’s at those times that it’s nice to have a method to cook your steak inside that will make them taste JUST as good. I found a cooking method that is so easy and delicious that I almost prefer it over the grill! It’s also cooked within about 15 minutes for medium rare!
This is the Cast Iron Skillet method. It’s seared on the stove, then popped into the oven to finish cooking. Here’s how to do it:
Let the steaks sit out at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
Put your cast iron skillet on the stove and get it warmed over medium-high heat.
Season both sides of the steak with seasoning. I use a Steak Seasoning from a local restaurant, but you could use any steak seasoning that you love. Put a couple teaspoons of oil in the pan. Sear both sides of the steak, two minutes on each side.
Place the skillet in the oven and cook until it’s cooked the way you like. A rare steak would only take about 6 minutes. I usually cook ours about 8 minutes. Of course this also depends on how thick the steak is, too. I always use a meat thermometer to check. Here are the temperatures for each cooking preference:
- Rare (125°-130°F) A steak cooked to “rare” is very different than a “raw”. …
- Medium Rare (130°-140°F) A “medium rare” steak will be warm in the center. …
- Medium (140°-150°F) A steak cooked “medium” will be mostly pink. …
- Medium Well (150°-160°F) …
- Well (Over 160°F)
When the steak is the correct temperature, remove it from the oven and put a pat of butter on the meat and let it rest. This will allow the juices to stay in the meat.
Your steak will be juicy, flavorful and oh, so delicious!
If you need a terrific side to go with your steak, my favorite way to bake a potato is to scrub the skin, then dry it. Place it on a foil-lined baking sheet and pierce the potato with a knife. Spray the potato with cooking spray, then sprinkle it with coarse salt. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes – one hour.
This is another delicious potato that would pair well with a steak.
Just because the weather is getting cooler, or you don’t have a gas grill doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious steak cooked in your kitchen! You won’t be sorry you tried this method! Enjoy!
