Six Tips To Help You Be a Gracious Hostess

Whether it’s the holidays or simply an invitation for coffee and dessert in your kitchen, here are six simple things anyone can do to make their guests feel welcome and at home.

  • Prepare as much as you can ahead of time. There’s nothing more stressful than people waiting for you to finish the preparations. I experienced this recently in my kitchen due to an impromptu invitation after church. My guests were hungry and they chose to seat themselves at my bar counter while I cooked. It flustered me to have conversation while trying to keep my thoughts on what I was doing. It was a reminder as to why I try to have as much as possible done before guests arrive. It reduces stress all the way around.
  • Play quiet instrumental music in the background. It’s welcoming, calming and it also keeps the gaps in conversation from reverberating off the walls!
  • Make sure the bathroom is tidied up. That means sinks and toilet are clean, trash is emptied, and a fresh towel is hung. Also, check that there is extra toilet paper available. You could go the extra mile and provide a trial size hair spray, hand lotion and tissue in a small basket.
  • Greet your guests at the door when they arrive. This says that you’re happy to see them come. Also, walk them to the door as they leave, rather than tossing a goodbye from your seat on the sofa. It shows a warm spirit of hospitality.
  • Engage everyone. Whether you play a game together after the meal or simply sit and chat, think of ways to bring everyone together. Ask questions of memories or stories of their lives. Care. Listen.
  • Pray about your time together before the day arrives. Jesus was the most gracious host, always inviting people to Himself. Ask for wisdom, grace and love for this gathering. Pray for your guests to sense the love of God in your home. The Lord will help those who trust in Him. Proverbs 3:5
