Steak with Mushrooms in the Crock Pot

My memories of Sundays when I was growing up are of dinner at home for the most part. It was a special meal after church. Though it was noon-ish, we didn’t come home to sandwiches, like all the other noonday meals, but usually to a roast, or chicken. When I got married, I continued that tradition. To me it helps make Sunday stand out, and I think it also makes the family and guests feel special. It slows the day down after a busy morning serving at church, and I love that!

That being said, the meal doesn’t have to be something difficult. Thank the Lord for the crock pot! I love being able to toss the meal inside, set it on low, and head out the door, confident that when we walk back into the house, the delicious smells of supper will greet us and draw us in like my Grandma Ray’s arms used to do.

Last Saturday when I was contemplating what to make for Sunday dinner, a recipe popped into my head that I had not made in years. It’s a Baked Steak with Mushrooms. Don’t worry, if you don’t like mushrooms, you don’t have to add them. Also, rather than baking this, I put it into the crock pot. I was worried that the piece of steak I had would be a little tough, and the slow cooker would help to make it tender…oh my, did it ever!!

Everything is ready to cook low and slow while we were at church!

Here’s the recipe:

Baked Steak with Mushrooms

2 Tbl. olive oil
3 Tbl. butter
1 large green peppers, cut into rings
1 large onion, cut into rings
1/2 lb. mushrooms
1 1/2 C Catsup
3/4 C coffee
2 1/2 lbs. sirloin steak

In a large skillet, add olive oil and brown steak on both sides. Remove and place in slow cooker. In the same pan, sauté’ mushrooms in butter; push to one side. Add green pepper and onions and cook until soft, but not brown. Mix with mushrooms, catsup and coffee; simmer 5 minutes. Pour sauce over steak in the crock pot. (I cooked mine on low for 5 hours. It was tender and delicious.)

Mashed potatoes would be perfect with this meal, but my groceries were minimal and I had no potatoes, so I fixed cheese grits instead, and they were delicious. We also had cucumber and sour cream salad, and corn. Sunday dinner perfection.

Here was a plate full of the goodness…

Even if you choose to have sandwiches for Sunday lunch, you need to pop this recipe in the crock pot sometime soon. It’s a lazy day, heavenly meal!

What memories do you have of Sunday dinner?

  1. I am not a coffee drinker nor purchaser of it, so could I substitute beef broth for the coffee in this recipe? Thanks!

    1. Yes, you could do that, or you could buy a small jar of instant coffee. You don’t taste the coffee in the sauce – it just gives it a rich and deep flavor. Enjoy! This is a fantastic recipe!
