A Mother’s Diligent Hand

Being a mother is a roller coaster event. Some days your children are sweet and obedient. Things go smoothly at home. They appreciate your efforts, express their love and respond with gratefulness to your sacrifices. The next day, however, doesn’t go as such. The children whine instead of obey. Nothing goes as it was supposed to – you run out of milk and the kids us Kool-Aid in its place (and half of it ends up on the floor). Supper burns because your attention was turned to children that were scrambling in a heap in the living room. When your husband comes home from work you’re frazzled and ready to turn in your Mommy badge!

We ALL have days like these, so be comforted in the fact that you are not alone. Eating the whole container of Oreos while locked in the bathroom is only a temporary fix. So what do you do when you find yourself in these house slippers? Proverbs 10:4 has a good remedy for us. It says, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.” It’s really tempting to want to throw your hands up and say, “I quit! I’ve tried and this discipline thing doesn’t work!” Or “Potty training has gone out the window, this child is never going to get it! He’s going to graduate wearing diapers!” Perhaps you’ve thought – “This child doesn’t realize the blessing of having Christian parents and I’m tired of being taken for granted!” Wherever you find yourself in the realm of motherhood, we can’t have a slack hand. We must wake up this morning with a renewed vigor to be diligent.

Call out to the Lord for His help today, and call all day long. He hears over the clamour of your children’s cries. He sees beyond the pile of laundry that never wanes. He understands your feelings of inadequacy. This is really the place He wants us, then we’ll depend on Him to strengthen our hand. Ask for wisdom to know what to do today, how to discipline and train, and when to step back. Just don’t quit. Be faithful. If you need to get out for a while, do it. Leave your child(ren) with a friend for an hour and do something to refresh yourself, all the while talking to the Lord about your family.

This passage says if we have a slack hand it will lead to poverty. Oh the riches of a mom that loves her family and is faithful even when it’s hard, even when there’s no return for her love and efforts. Your day is coming…this passage promises riches. Oh, not the kind the world thinks of, but riches that are eternal – children that love God, that grow up desiring to serve Him, that pray they can be a godly mother just like you, and hearing your Father say, “Well done.”

Stay diligent today…pay day’s coming.

Followers and Finger Pointers

I recently heard about a church member that had given his pastor trouble for years. He was always fussing, always critical of the way things were being done in the church. He saw it as his job to keep things in line. He hindered the work of the ministry and discouraged his poor pastor week after week.

This dear man was miserable and came to talk to his pastor a couple weeks ago to talk about it. As their conversation progressed the pastor asked him about his salvation. This man had never truly been saved! He had considered his church membership enough to get him to heaven. That night he trusted in Christ’s work on the cross for his sins and was saved! He then became a follower instead of a finger pointer!

I thought of that man this morning as I read in Mark 2. In this passage the scribes and Pharisees were so consumed with legalities of religion that they couldn’t rejoice in the life of the Redeemer. They were always looking so they could accuse Christ. Their first issue was that Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. They, who were sinners themselves, yet didn’t see themselves as such, were critical of Jesus’ spending time with the “worst of sinners.” How else would sinners be reached if time was not spent with them? They spoke to His disciples to try to dissuade them from following Christ. Stirring up dissension is what the devil does best.

The next criticism was aimed at the disciples because they didn’t fast. Jesus’ reasoning was because He was still with them. There would come a day when He was gone that they would fast., but now there was work to be done!

Then the disciples plucked corn off the stalks in the field and ate on the Sabbath…another no, no according to these wicked scribes and Pharisees. God’s servants needed the strength from the food so they could continue to serve.

Lastly they saw the man with the withered hand in the temple on the Sabbath and watched to see what Jesus would do, whether He would heal him or not. Jesus knew their wicked thoughts and healed the man. Jesus came to “save life” even on the Sabbath day!

These scribes and Pharisees were not godly. They were not followers of Christ. They were only religious. They were more concerned with legalities than they were with pointing people to the Savior. They wanted to make sure that all the commandments were followed to the letter. They really weren’t happy unless they had something to stir up.

There are those who proclaim to be righteous, but have their notebooks out, looking for an opportunity to stick out an accusing finger and place blame. Those that are looking over the edge of their glasses with a critical eye at what is being said and done are much like these unregenerated men. They are not lovers of Christ, but of Belial. They are following the pattern of the Accuser.

Note too, that the opposers are in the minority. Most of the people were in the crowds and wanted to be near Christ to hear His teaching (up to the point of His death that is). The S&P’s tried to hinder the work that Christ did. Stirred-up church members are also hindering. When they whisper behind their leader’s back and speak in hushed tones with eyebrows raised, they are not supporting the work, but tearing it down.

Which group do you find yourself in – the followers or the finger pointers? Be careful of Satan’s tactics. He’s looking for those he can use to keep things stirred-up. Let’s each determine to stand up instead to support the work of the ministry and encourage sinners to be reached, servants to be strengthened, work to be done, and life to be given.

Heart’s Longings

This morning I woke up after being a bit lazy. I got up and headed to the kitchen as I always do to feed our kitty, Liza and to get the coffee perking. As I neared the island in the middle of the kitchen I saw a note lying there – it said, “Gone walking. Allison.” This was a new wrinkle for my teenager. She usually waves her dad and me on when we walk in the mornings. I went to the front window to see if I could see her up the hill near our house or rounding the corner of the street. When I didn’t see her I decided to call her cell phone just to see where she was. I called…no answer. I looked up the street again. After a few minutes I called again…her voice mail picked up. My eyes scanned the street again and I still didn’t see her. She’s a big girl, she can take a walk, but her not answering my call was making me concerned. Finally on the third call she answered, and at the same time I saw her rounding the curve, her bright yellow hoodie bouncing with her step. Her phone had been on vibrate and she hadn’t heard when I called the times before. All was well.

There was a statement was in our Sunday school lesson this week that really got my attention. It said, “What the heart loves the eyes will seek and find.” Why were my eyes seeking for Allison at the window? Because I love her. If I had no love for her I would have read the note and then finished getting my coffee. It wouldn’t have concerned me if she still wasn’t home at noon! But no, my love for her caused my eyes to look for her.

What my heart loves, my eyes will seek and find. What other loves do my eyes seek and find on a daily basis? Are my eyes looking for the Lord this morning? I will find Him. Am I eagerly seeking how He is at work right now in my life? I will see it! Do I seek for my Bible when I first arise because I love His Word? I will find treasures! Will my eyes be looking for someone with whom I can share the Gospel? God will see to it that I find them.

Or do I love my email and seek for it first thing in the morning? Do I love sleep more than prayer? Do I love entertainment more than worship? Pleasure more than service? It’s right at my fingertips. I’ll look for it and find it.

Do you want to know what your heart loves? Think back to what your eyes are looking for today – it is the tell tale sign of the greatest longings in your heart.

Valentine’s Day

I usually don’t post anything over the weekend, but thought that on this Valentine’s Day I’d write about the special Valentine in my life!

Last night was our dinner date. We had the wonderful privilege of going to a beautiful restaurant in Knoxville, thanks to a gift card my hubby received for his birthday. I can remember years gone by when our Valentine date consisted of dinner at home with the girls. Those were special days full of sweet memories. But as time passes and you find yourself in another cycle of life, it’s special in a different sort of way. We didn’t mind sharing dinner with the girls when they were small. They needed to know that they were our Valentines and that Mommy and Daddy loved each other. We would set the table with red and white linens, get out the good dishes and make a special meal together, ending with a chocolate dessert. Then off to bed for the two of them so we could have the evening to exchange cards and gifts.

How did I get the fortune of this husband of mine? He is such a romantic at heart – not just on Valentine’s day, but all through the year. That’s what makes Valentine’s Day so special to me; we don’t have to put all our efforts into one day to make up for what we haven’t done all year long. This special day is an overflow of all year long. At dinner last night my husband said,

“I’m so glad you enjoy romantic evenings like this.”

I said, “No, it’s amazing that you enjoy this – not all men do.”

He came back again, “No, in today’s day, not many women enjoy this either.”

How sad. They have no clue what they’re missing out on! If they did they would surely change their mind! To be treated like Cinderella whose handsome prince not only found her glass slipper, but also her heart is the second greatest blessing of my life.

After returning home from our incredible dinner I received my gifts. Any man that needs help buying his wife a gift needs to contact my husband; he’s better at it than I am! He likes themed gifts. This year it was “Red.” A Nine West red purse, I Love Lucy Season 2 DVD’s (the packaging is red), a picture frame with red wording on it, Raspberry Almond Premium M&M’s, girlie note cards, and a couple other items. It was all packed into the red purse…how clever!

The bummer is that what I ordered him for his gift hasn’t arrived yet. Oh well, that means we can continue to celebrate when it does come!

I pray your Valentine’s Day is a blessed one!

Used for God

A few years ago while our family was visiting a dear couple they brought out a violin case and handed it to Allison, our budding violinist. It seems that this violin had been in their family a long time. Neither of them play, but this couple had the hopes that one of their grandchildren would and they could keep the instrument in the family. However, their dream was never realized. This family had learned that Allison was playing a violin that had been loaned to her and that she would need to return it at the end of her high school years. They shared with her that it was their desire to give it to her so it could be used. They hated the thoughts of it just sitting in the case wasting away. They weren’t sure of the value of the instrument, or even if it was usable, but wanted Allison to have it and look it over.

When Allison opened the violin case, it was obvious that the poor instrument hadn’t been played in years. One string dangled pitifully, the bridge was leaning like the Tower of Pisa, and the bow needed more than just a little rosin. We brought the violin home and contacted a violin repair man. Upon his inspection he told us that this was a very good violin and a valuable one – a Juzek, handmade in the 1920’s. A couple weeks of repairs and the violin was in great shape and now makes beautiful music because it’s in the hands of someone gifted with music!

Each of us who know Christ as our Savior are a little like that violin. There’s a gift inside waiting to come out. God gives us each spiritual gifts to use for Him the moment we’re saved. “Beautiful music” is waiting to be played for His honor simply by the offering up of our gifts He gives us. In Exodus 35:30-35 we read about the sanctuary being built and furnished. God had given very detailed instructions. Who would accomplish all this work? We read that Bezaleel had the spirit of wisdom and knowledge in workmanship so that he could devise cunning works in gold, silver and brass. He cut stones and carved wood. Others were given the gift to work with embroidery or weaving. It says that the children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the Lord, all whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the Lord had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.

God equips each of us with what we need to be able to serve Him and further the work of the Kingdom. We’re not expected to be or do what someone else is or can do – we’re just to be faithful stewards with our gifts. They were not all woodworkers, nor all engravers. Each person was needed to accomplish the task at hand.

Your church is the same way; there is much to do, and God has equipped different people in that local assembly to be able to work there. What gifts has God given you? It might be the ability to organize. Perhaps you are an encourager. God can use your words – written or spoken to be a blessing to many. Do you have the gift of giving? Hospitality? Mercy?

Are you using your gift(s) in your local church, or are you hiding them away like the violin in the case? No gifts are too small. Take the abilities God has given out of its case, tighten up the strings and use it. You’ll be amazed at the beautiful music your service will bring!

Not all of us can preach God’s Word
Not all of us can sing,
I must admit that the violin
Is surely not my thing!

Not everyone’s a leader,
So many more are needed
To do the work behind the scenes
Until the plan’s succeeded.

The tasks may be simple
But if they’re done for the Lord,
Seeing His smile of approval
Will be the best reward.

So don’t compare the gifts you have
To those that seem exceeding,
For folks that are just faithful
Is what the Lord is needing.
