Food prices continue to escalate, don’t they? It’s easy to get upset each week when when you walk the grocery store aisles. But if you know Christ as your Savior, you need to remember that there is no panic in heaven. Jesus said,
For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:31-33
God knows what we need, even better than we do. We can trust Him.
This was brought to my attention this weekend as I walked into Kroger, shopping list in hand. I knew there were items I was seeking that could be a bit pricey, but I prayed before I left home that the Lord would direct my steps.
My first surprise was a package of corn on the cob, twelve mini ears, marked to $1.50. I picked up two, knowing that most of it would go into the freezer to be used later this week. Then I also found Mashed Avocado, guacamole, and Baby Broccoli, all with sale prices attached to their shiny packages. “Thank you, Lord. How kind of you to provide these things on my list! I couldn’t believe it when I checkout out. I had so many reduced items in my cart – most all things I normally purchase and needed. I did buy two boxes of packaged powdered “Donettes” marked to .87, simply because I’m having some young guests soon that I thought would enjoy them for a snack! Who can pass up a deal like that?
Coffee, cashews, vitamins, steak, sausage, crispy onions were all added to my cart and that plus all my produce totaled around $35 dollars.
When you’re grocery shopping, be on the lookout for those mark down stickers. My Kroger had some of these items in their “normal” place. Other items were piled into a cart, filled with marked downs. I walk slowly and carefully watch for those stickers. Then I check the expiration date. The vitamins don’t expire until September of 2024. The donuts date is next week, so I popped them into the freezer to keep them fresh. Everything I got had plenty of time to still be fresh and deliciously safe!
Our heavenly Father knows what we need. If He doesn’t provide it, we can rest assured that we did not need it.
After checking out, I placed all my bags in the back of my car, and then sliding into my seat, I bowed my head to thank the Lord again for His kindness and provision for our needs. We can trust Him for the “large” burdens, just as we can for groceries that seem “more than we can afford.” Pray and let the Lord provide in His sweet way and time.
Whether it’s groceries or anxieties, He has told us to cast all our care on Him, because He cares for us!
Refresh your (grocery) load by trusting your Heavenly Father.
