Some surprises are special and fun like an unexpected visit, a party or a gift in the mail, but other surprises can jolt us, like when plans get changed, hopes get dashed, or a path is turned completely into a dead end. We can feel derailed and “out of control.” But the truth is that the situation isn’t out of control; it’s simply out of OUR control. Psalm 50:12 is truth that God is in control of everything – including the interruptions in life. But what are we to do when life gets turned upside down by events that shock us?
Isaiah 55:8-9 –
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
What is God wanting us to do, according to this passage? The answer is in verse six of this chapter –
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.
When interruptions come in our life, we must call on the Lord. We must seek Him so that we can learn during this season what He is wanting to do for us. Call on God. Ask Him for directions and wisdom in this situation that was unexpected.
Another passage that is parallel is – Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. In other words,
God loves to surprise us!
God’s surprises are situations in which I have no control so that He will get the greatest glory! We see Him act in surprising , grand ways over and over in Scripture. Consider:
- David killing a giant with a slingshot and stone!
- Elijah being fed by a raven!
- Lazarus wasn’t healed from sickness; he was raised from the dead!
- Jesus didn’t come as a king, but as a baby so He could die for our sins.
Isn’t it easy to assume that those people in those examples in Scripture easily trusted God’s “higher ways?” We must remember that they didn’t know the end of the story! They had to trust God’s ways, just like we do.
Your suffering has an expiration date!
What surprising situation has touched your life today? What are you worrying about, wondering how it’s all going to work out? Stop and thank God that His ways are better, that He is writing a story that you could never even think about. Remember that His surprise – a situation in which you have no control so that God will get the greatest glory is the BEST plan for your life. You can trust your God!
Surrender your situation to God. Tell Him you trust Him to write your story.
God is waiting to surprise you!
