You can listen to this post here on Refresh Her podcast. You’ll be able to listen to each step and clean along with me.
As you look into your bedroom right now, is it a refuge…or a wreck? A haven,,, or havoc? If you want to sleep better and feel more rested, studies show that having a clean and organized room can help! When our homes are cared for, we are also (and especially) caring for the people who live there. Let’s do what we can to feel rested, and do the same for the family who shares our home.
It’s easy to neglect cleaning the bedroom because one might think, “Well no one else is going to see this room! Guests won’t come in here!” But we need to do ourselves the favor of creating a space that is an inviting retreat from the busyness of life and the world.

The room I began my spring-cleaning in was the guest room. Stop and take a before picture of your room before you clean. Here are a couple “before” photos of my guest room…

Before

Tools:
- Long-handled duster
- Dusting spray and cloth
- Window cleaner
- Paper towels
- Squeegee
- Blind cleaning tool (if applicable)
- Magic Eraser
- Vacuum
- Mop
- Yard stick, an old sock attached with a rubber band
- Trash bag, and two other bags.
- We’re going to be working from TOP to BOTTOM. This way when the dust falls, it will settle and then we’ll clean up the floors last and get rid of that dust. If you’ve recently washed your bedspread, cover it with a sheet to protect it from falling dust.
This post will include the how-to’s of cleaning your bedroom, but also three tips to making your room an inviting haven.
- Tip 1 – Clearing away clutter can help you rest better!
- Deal with any clutter. Clean off surfaces, items in the floor of the bedroom and the closet. . Remember our Clutter tip – As you come to clutter while you’re moving around the room, you’re going to make a decision. Those three bags you have are for three categories: throw away, give away, and keep. Decide which bag it goes into as you touch it. One of my favorite quotes to keep a room clean is Don’t put it down; put it away.
Tip 2 – Fresh clean linens in good shape will help you sleep better! - Strip bed of sheets, matress pad, blankets and bedspread/comforter. Put these in the washer. Start with comforter or bedspread being washed first, if you have another set of sheets for the bed. Put clean bedding back on the bed. Fluff accent pillows. Add clean bedspread.
Here are simple steps to making a bed with minimal steps and in less than 10 minutes!

- Tip 3 – Darkened rooms invite better sleep. Add black-out curtains or shades for night time, but add little lamps for welcoming lighting in the early evening.
- Clean windows. Remove curtains – vacuum or wash. Wash window/blinds
- Clean mirrors
- Dust the room from top to bottom. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, Shelves, dressers, light bulbs, doors, pictures or decor and walls.
- Dust baseboards.
- Use Magic Eraser on walls or doors
- Remove anything under the bed. Unclutter. Vacuum.
- Use yard stick to go under/behind furniture
- Put back items needed on dresser or side tables.
- Vacuum floors.
Go the Extra Mile:
Clean dresser drawers. This is a good time to clean them with the changing of the seasons. True confession – my dresser drawers are typically always a MESS, but I got them straightened up this week!! It feels good to get that done!
Clean out the closet. Use those three bags!!
The closet in our guest room is our only space for storage. Suitcases, seasonal decor and those kind of things are stored in here. **Cough** Cough** It had gotten out of control!

The longer you put off a cleaning task, the harder it will be to get it clean! I was glad I tackled the closet…and under the bed where I had extra pictures stored! I’ll be sharing some more pics on social media today, in case you’re curious!
Crack the window open and Light a candle! Your bedroom will be fresh, clean and inviting tonight when it’s time for bed!
Take an “After” photo of your room!

When weariness sets in, home is the soft lullaby to our souls.”
