Choosing Wisely: Lessons from Filling Out an NCAA Bracket

I did something today I’ve never done before. I filled out a bracket for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Our family created a group where we each filled out brackets to see who will be the “winner.”

I enjoy basketball when “my team” is playing, but I’m not by any means an avid fan. When I was asked to join the family group I was told I needed to create a user name. I decided on, Lucky Guess. You can probably figure out why! I have no idea:

How well all the teams play.

Who the best players are.

Who is most likely to win!

I was even told that some girls pick winning teams simply by the color of the team they like best! That sounded good, so I did a little of that when making my choices. If the color didn’t influence me, I looked at home of the teams and picked the “place” I liked, or from which I had memories! Crazy, right?

After my selections were made and I was officially entered into our family competition, I thought about how ridiculous my selection methods were! Then I wondered – how often do we make important choices based simply on our preferences? Perhaps we make decisions based on a whim or an impulse. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I must not live my life like that. Here’s why according to Proverbs 20:24 says,

Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

We can’t make the best choice! So, instead, we pray. We ask the Lord for direction. We get His input and wait on Him for His direction. The mantra I try to implement about decisions is…No decision without prayer.

Is there a decision before you right now? Don’t be impulsive or act on chance. Stop and pray. Your goings are of the Lord and He will direct your way. It’s much easier than even selecting a basketball championship. Just do it. 😉

By the way, I purposefully chose Kentucky as the winner of it all, because they are my team! We’ll see how all that turns out!

Refresh your choices by praying.

  1. Our family has been doing this for years! Our adult children, our grandchildren….everyone gets into the spirit of friendly competition! It’s a lot of fun to follow the games and keep track of how each one of us is doing. And believe it or not, last year I won! I enjoyed your application of how we make decisions. May we be wise and ask the Lord to guide us.

    1. Kathi, I can see why your family enjoys doing the brackets. We’ve had so much fun watching the scores and then texting one another about whoever is in the lead. At the moment, that’s me!!! Ha!
And yes, wisdom is what I’m asking the Lord for. Isn’t awesome that He promises to give it?! We are blessed!
🏀 Thanks for taking time to share!
