I have loved having flower boxes hanging from my upstairs windows. My dad told me I would set our house off from the others in the street by their embellishment. He was right.
Even the simple task of opening the window to water them each day is a pleasure I enjoy. Early in the morning when my neighbor’s roosters are crowing, I lift the window and slowly pour a stream of water from my pink watering can into my Sweet potato vines, Creeping Jenny and Geraniums. Therei just something about that slow routine in the quiet of the early morning that I love.
However, I was unsure how to keep them watered while we were away a few days each week of the summer. Then I came across a simple way to create a watering globe!
I took empty water bottles and poked about six holes in the lid using a safety pin. So the holes are quite small.

Then I filled the bottle with water. Before putting it into the soil, I read that the soil should be moist.

I pressed the bottle into the soil to create a little well, then I placed the bottle into the soil vertically.

I’m told that when the soil gets dry, the lid will release enough water to keep the plants moist.

The watering globes you buy are pretty, but they are expensive when you need a lot of them. I’m not concerned about what these will look like in the planter because they are up on the second floor. Pretty sure no one will even see them.
The jury is still out as to how well these will work, but I have high hopes! It will be nice not to worry about my plants dying while we are away!
Have you tried this type of watering system? If so, did it work for you?
Refresh your planters!

Love this idea, Denise! I’ve looked at those watering globes in stores and online and like you I need several so purchasing them would really add up. Thanks for sharing your tip!

I’ll probably be adjusting them as I learn how much water they release. The soil was moist in my boxes after being away 2.5 days, so I was happy with that! I hope this works well for you!
