Remember when you were little and your mom made you take a nap or at least have “rest time?” As adults, it’s so easy to push and push and push without stopping to take a breath and simply rest. I admit that I am constantly on the go, trying to finish my “to-do” list before the day is over. That’s when my sweet, loving husband will come to me and “make me take a nap” or at least slow down and get off my feet to “chill” as he calls it. I’m thankful.
This Monday I was tired from a busy weekend of ministry. With Dale’s encouragement, I did accomplish some things, but I made time to intentionally slow down. It was rainy and dark – a perfect day to stay home and enjoy the pleasure of a day of rest. I posted a few of these pics on Instagram, but this is how I spent my day –
I lit candles both upstairs and downstairs. Their flickering light help keep the house cozy and not so dark, and the fragrance was heavenly. Apple Cider from Yankee Candle is a favorite fall scent. Coffee is a given every morning, but it was not just wanted – it was needed!
I made some Sour Dough Bread because we needed it, but also because I love making it. It had been a while since I’d made some loaves and it was so nice to get in the kitchen and do the simple steps of putting it together. The aroma of bread baking also makes home inviting and delicious!
The bread made for a delicious grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich – the accompaniment to our Cream of Tomato Soup! Such a simple lunch, but so satisfying on a cold fall day!
I loved having time to read more of Jan Karon’s new book, My Beloved. I have loved her Mitford series and was so happy she has added to it. This one has been very good! I’m taking my time because I don’t want it to end!
Reading makes me sleepy, so I took a short nap. If I sleep for 15 minutes I feel so refreshed! It’s pretty nice to be made to take a nap! I don’t resist!
The last fun thing I did on my rest day was a little watercolor picture. I found this pretty turkey picture on Pinterest and used it as my example. I turned my painting into a card that I’ll send to someone before Thanksgiving. Painting feels like a splurge because I enjoy it so much. I’m trying to improve my skills by doing it consistently. One day I’d like to spend the whole day doing nothing but watercolor!
Have you taken time to make yourself slow down? Our bodies weren’t meant to go non-stop. Jesus invites us to come to Him and rest – that’s the best kind of rest. His example was to go away and rest for short periods. We rest so we can work. You’ll feel stronger and ready to get back into your ministry, chores, and responsibilities after you’ve taken time to slow down.
Refresh yourself this weekend with some intentional rest.
What would you enjoy doing for a whole day?
P.S. I posted the video on Instagram and Facebook yesterday of Nana‘s fried catfish. Checked it out if you haven’t seen it.

A day off sounds like a dream. Yours looks delightful. I am happy to hear there is a new Mitford book. I am currently reading To Be Where You Are. I have loved all the Mitford books. I am no artist, but I love to embroider. I’m working on a project now that makes me happy. 🙂

I pray you’ll take/make some time to rest and enjoy your embroidery, even for an hour or so. It will make you ready for the work that is ahead! It’s always good to hear from you!
