There is something comforting to me about having my pantry and freezer well-stocked, ready to help me pull a meal together at a moment’s notice. However, after the holidays, I decided I needed to use up what is on the shelves so they don’t go to waste. That was when I told Dale, I’m only buying perishable items until I use most of what I have.”
It’s challenged me to get creative with my menus. I’ve taken a longer look in my pantry before deciding what we’ll have for lunch or supper.
My freezer has half cans of corn, diced tomatoes and black beans. I used those to make quesadillas. Individual frozen fruit salads were the perfect accompaniment for dinner. A couple scones were added to our breakfast of eggs. Frozen fresh strawberries were added to yogurt. I’m pulling dry beans and a ham bone out this week for Senate bean soup!

It has felt nice to see spaces opening up in both the pantry and the freezer. I feel good about using what was stashed away, and also saving money on our grocery bill.
Emptying and using what you have already purchased is a good challenge…are you up for it?
