Pressing Matters

A couple weeks ago I was spending time with Whitney and she saw an ironed handkerchief of my husband’s and commented-

“You still iron Dad’s handkerchiefs?

That’s so sweet.”

I sure do – every week. It’s a little way I can let him know I was thinking about him, and that I care about the little areas of his life.

I also iron all my cloth napkins that we use each day. It literally takes me less than a minute to do each one, and they look so much prettier on the table when they’re pressed. They also store easier when they’re not crumpled up.

What else do I iron? My clothes. Most everything gets touched with its steamy pressure. Even a simple t-shirt looks better after being pressed. It’s the difference of looking like you took the time to put yourself together, rather than throwing on the first thing you found in your drawer.

The truth is, I love ironing. Getting that appliance nice and hot and full of steam, and then watching the transformation take place is gratifying! Maybe it’s like the one who enjoys the difference cutting grass makes in the yard! I turn on a podcast and listen while I tackle my pile. I also don’t let it stack up too much so that it seems overwhelming!

All this isn’t being persnickety, its being mindful – mindful of my husband, my guests, and my own testimony. It simply says, I care.

If you’ve joined the, “just toss it in the dryer” team, I don’t look down on you one bit. But I might challenge you to see how enjoyable using a hot, steamy iron can be and how much better the results are. 😉

  1. Good morning, Denise. This is Ardie from Tri-State Ladies Retreat. I tried to read the rest of your post about pressing on and there isn’t anything there. I used to tell our daughter that that’s what I wanted on my tombstone – “Pressing on”. Could you please send me the rest of that blog?

    Thanks – Ardie
