Dealing with the Fools in Your Life – God Will Judge

When US Airways flight 1549 went into the Hudson River on January 14th of this year all 155 passengers were safely accounted for. I remember the picture of the passengers standing on the wings of the plane – they were shivering in the icy waters, but they had realized that they had had a brush with death. I don’t imagine that they minded the cold. They were thankful to be alive! They had escaped a tragic death.

As we have studied the life of Nabal in I Samuel 25, we see that Nabal had very close to death, but he doesn’t even realize it. He’s oblivious to the dangerous situation he had placed himself and all the men in his household in. He was delivered because Abigail had intervened for him again. I wonder how many times she’d had to do that in the past? She was able to talk to David on Nabal’s behalf and settle his anger down. David laid down his sword and is now willing to let the Lord avenge the wrong that was done to him.

In verse 36 of this chapter we read that Nabal had been feasting like a king. He wasn’t a king, but he was feasting and making merry as though he was one. His heart is merry because he is drunk. This was his only source of happiness because he did not know the Lord.

People drink for many reasons. As you read this list composed by members of AA, think about Nabal who was a hard drinker.

We drank for happiness and became unhappy.
We drank for joy and became miserable.
We drank for sociability and became argumentative.
We drank for sophistication and became obnoxious.
We drank for friendship and made enemies.
We drank for sleep and awakened without rest.
We drank for strength and felt weak.
We drank “medicinally” and acquired health problems.
We drank for relaxation and got the shakes.
We drank for bravery and became afraid.
We drank for confidence and became doubtful.
We drank to make conversation easier and slurred our speech.
We drank to forget and were forever haunted.
We drank for freedom and became slaves.
We drank to erase problems and saw them multiply.
We drank to cope with life and invited death.
Being drunk is a cheap substitute for what God wants to do in our lives. God has the answer in Ephesians 5:18 – And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit. The emptiness, the sorrow, the hurt, can all be resolved through the Holy Spirit. He gives you strength and help to either change the problem or endure them. Don’t settle for Satan’s substitute like Nabal did.
In the last part of verse 36 we see Abigail’s great wisdom. She told him nothing at all ‘til the morning light.” She intends to tell him, but she’s discerning about when to tell him. Imagine what she would have said if she hadn’t controlled her tongue –
“Do you know what you almost caused to happen by your selfishness? There was almost a civil war here because of you! Now here you are stone drunk! You can’t even control yourself…”
He was such a fool and was really acting like it, but she says NOTHING. That takes the control of God’s spirit over your tongue. Prov. 17:27,28 – He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. Here’s another rule to apply here:
Don’t discuss anything really important after 11:00 at night. HALT! If you’re hungry, angry, lonely or tired, stop before you speak!
In verse 37 Abigail goes to Nabal and tells him what had happened. I imagine that he had a really big headache, but his head is clearer than the night before. I believe she loved him. If you love the Lord, you’re going to love your husband. You might not like the things he does, but you will love him. When she told him what happened, the Scripture says that his heart became like a stone. He had something like a stroke, then ten days later he died.
It must have broken Abigail’s heart. How many times had she prayed for her husband? How long had she sought God’s face to work in his life and bring him to a place of surrender? Now he is dead with no hope. I don’t believe she ever prayed that God would kill him. Her husband never changed. He died a fool, but she did not have the guilt of taking his life. Nor did David have Nabal’s blood on his hands. They let God do the avenging. Nabal’s sin ended his life. God will not allow the Nabals of this world to sin indefinitely. Proverbs 2:22, 24:20 If you’re a Nabal, that should put fear in your heart. If you’re an Abigail, it should make you know that you can trust the Lord to do what He wants to do in his time.
Psalm 37 is psalm full of promises about how the Lord will deal with the evil man. We can live with the fools in our life if we’ll believe these promises. God ultimately delivered Abigail from this difficult situation, and He will deliver you. We think about David’s mistreatment, and also of the hard things that Abigail endured. But in God’s way and time He delivered her out of this marriage.
Many women have to live for years with a foolish husband. They must continue to love him with a Christ-like love. I’m not suggesting that God will take the life of a foolish husband, and we should never pray that God would kill him. If we have a heart for God, we will be praying that this man will come to repentance.
God has a cup of wrath, and when that is full He will judge. You can trust Him to deal in the right way and in the right time with the fool in your life, because He is a righteous God!
If you’re acting like Nabal and stiff-arming God, realize how close you are to God’s judgment. He is merciful and desires that all come to repentance. Is the “plane getting ready to crash?” The only way we’ll be safe is to be God’s child with sin confessed. Don’t be a Nabal – God loves you and is calling to you today.

Ladies’ Retreat, Continued

The first item of business at Saturday’s retreat was a light breakfast of muffins, rolls, coffee and juice. The men were there promptly to serve us our caffeine!
We had three different workshops for the ladies to choose from. Here’s the group of ladies that gathered to seek help in organizing their time in the workshop I held, entitled, “Multi-tasking my Minutes.”
Lord willing, I’ll share some of my tips on a blog in the near future. One thought was that
there is always time to do what God calls us to do.

“Help! I’m homeschooling!” was the name of this workshop (pictured below) led by a veteran home schooling mom, Rene. She did a super job giving ideas, resources and helpful tips for these young moms just entering the years of teaching their children at home. I know they came away with good ideas and encouragement!

The third workshop was entitled, “Making the Most of your Senior Years.” Reva shared creative ideas to spend their senior years in fruitful, productive activities.
The ladies also received help in financial matters and taking care of themselves.
After the workshop time we had our second service in the auditorium that began with special music from two teen girls – Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us. What a blessing!

Following a drama that a group performed a mother/daughter duo sang, The Lighthouse. We do indeed, owe our life to Him, for Jesus is the Lighthouse that cast away the darkness and brought us to Himself.

The second testimony was given by Kathy Barker, a member of our church that has been dealing with cancer for 1 1/2 years. She has been a real trophy of God’s grace as she’s gone through a stem cell transplant, steroids, and chemo. Her testimony is “Whatever God wants is what I want.”

Some quotes by Kathy that I jotted down are:
God will do for us what He has chosen.
God can take care of that! – (Her mom said that about Kathy’s cancer.)
When someone asked why God would allow Kathy to get cancer she answered with, “Why not? Wouldn’t it be better for this to happen to me than someone who’s not saved?”
It’s just the crossing to heaven that we fear. We know heaven is waiting for us.
You look at your priorities differently when you have cancer.
A card is a little thing, but to a person who’s hurting, it’s love.
If God can take care of our greatest need (salvation) He can take care of the little things.

The retreat ended with lunch catered by Atlanta Bread Company.
The ladies were asked to sign a “Blessing and Memories Book” so we could remember the highlights of the weekend.

The reason you don’t see any plates on the table is because the men were SO prompt at picking up our trash when we were finished! Bless their hearts, they worked hard!

The weekend was indeed significant in my life. The Lord taught me so much. He has given me the opportunity to work beside some sweet servants. I did not pull this off alone – there were sooooo many that helped. I thank each of them for all that was done! I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you! I am so blessed to call Boones Creek Bible Church my home church!

Ladies’ Retreat Blessings

The ladies’ retreat that we held at our church this past weekend was such a blessing. My prayer had been that the Lord would allow it not to be successful, but significant. My desire was that we leave the retreat on Saturday changed, have new tools for our walk with the Lord, and be better equipped to serve Him. Of course we had planned much fun and fellowship in the weekend as well. Here are some pictures of the weekend and some of the memories that I’ll take from the retreat.

Our theme was, The human heart is dark without Christ, but what a difference Jesus makes! This was the beginning of the evening as I welcomed the ladies.

One fun thing was the giving away of special gifts. There were about 15 ladies that went home with a lovely gift that tied into our theme. I heard that there was even some friendly bribing that went along with it…that’s how desirable those gifts were!
One highlight of Friday night was “Fun time” put on by three men in our church – two of them on full-time staff (scary!). They made us laugh with their antics, stories and surprises. Here’s Pastor Steve telling us why men aren’t depressed. “No strap problems in public, one suitcase for a week’s vacation, one wallet, one color for all seasons…” Very funny, and very true!

Here was one of the surprises. My husband (that’s him in the overalls! Ahhh!) sang me a love song with our daughter, Allison, accompanying him on her guitar. “If my nose were running money, Honey, I’d blow it all on you!” Does that touch your heart? I think you can tell by the expression on my face the effect it had on me!

Here are Pastor C. and Pastor Steve doing a skit “in a fast sports car with Cooter, the dog running alongside.” Don’t you love the foot wear?

Brad Higgins joined our pastors on the stage coach ride of their lives…all for .25!

The last song by the men, sung to the tune of Rocky Top, described how “well” they were caring for things at home while their wives were away at the retreat. Trust me, every woman had reason to worry about things on the home front after they finished!
We had an ice cream break with seven different flavors of Blue Bell ice cream being offered! Sweet treat and sweet fellowship! The men in our church served us all weekend. What a blessing they were! We didn’t want for a thing – they were always at hand to take good care of us!

After returning back to the auditorium we had the serious part of our service. The special music pointed our thoughts to The Light of the world – Jesus.

Our speaker Friday night was Debbie Duncan. How the Lord used her to give us a sweet challenge with her testimony!

Debbie began her testimony by sharing her love for music. She told us that in music there are rests – times when there is no music. She said, “God puts rests in our lives too. There was a time when there was no music, but God was there.” Debbie shared with us her testimony of losing her husband, Tom five years ago. Tom was out hunting with his son-in-law when he experienced a heart attack and died. Debbie’s life changed in an instant, yet her faith remained strong. She shared that there were many days that she didn’t want to get out of bed, but she did. She trusted her God and what she knew to be true about Him to get her through the difficult days. She shared with us how the Lord had prepared her for this time using His Word and other experiences, such as a ladies’ retreat at The Wilds. Her face radiated the love of her God, as well as the peace that only the Lord can give.
A couple other quotes that I jotted down as she spoke were:
“This day didn’t take God by surprise.”
“We can’t control what comes into our lives, but we can control how we respond to it.”
“I had people tell me to let them know if I had a need, but I just went to my heavenly Father and let Him burden their heart about it.” (This was a sharp reminder to me that I must obey when the Spirit of God nudges my heart to do something for someone else. God may want to use me to be the answer to their prayers!)
Tomorrow I’ll share about Saturday and what the Lord did on the second day of our retreat.

Sunday Dinner

What’s Cookin‘ in the Parsonage?
This was a very busy weekend with the ladies’ retreat at church, so I didn’t go out on a limb for Sunday dinner. We didn’t have to resort to scrambled eggs or sandwiches, however (not that that is a bad thing, it’s just not what we would call “Sunday dinner food”). Here’s the menu:
Barbecued Roasted Chicken
White Rice, served with barbecue drippings from chicken
Corn, tomato, and red onion side dish
Green Salad with apples, craisins and walnuts/Raspberry vinaigrette
Toasted French Bread with Parmesan cheese
Ice Cream
To have the meal ready for when we got home, here are my preparations made before leaving at 9:00.
  1. Put roasting hen into a 9 x 13 dish. Salt and pepper chicken. Spread barbecue sauce on chicken with basting brush. Add about a cup of water to dish. Place in 275 degree oven uncovered.
  2. Measure out rice. Set aside. Measure water for rice in the pan it will be cooked in. Leave on stove ready to boil upon returning home.
  3. Make corn side dish. Pour a can of Niblets white shoe peg corn into a mixing bowl. Add about a cup of diced grape tomatoes and 1/4 cup diced red onion. Add approximately 1/4 cup low-fat Italian dressing. Toss. Cover and refrigerate.
  4. Set table. Then, after returning home after church:
  5. Boil water for rice. Add rice and let set ’til done.
  6. Slice French bread. Butter, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place under broiler ’til browned.
  7. Slice chicken and place on a platter.
  8. Viola! Dinner is ready!

The Retreat Day has Arrived

Today is our long-awaited Ladies’ Retreat at church. It’s been a busy week finishing up preparations, but I’m so excited to see what the Lord is going to do this weekend; spite whatever it is I’ve forgotten to cover in details!

The church has been lightly decorated. The furniture in the foyer has been rearranged. The resource table has new books ready for purchase. We’ve also added some beautiful journals (only $3!) so someone can pick up a new book to scribe their walk with God. The sanctuary’s platform has been made more feminine so our speakers will feel more comfortable up there. The gym has been set for our Saturday lunch. Each table has hydrangeas as a centerpiece. There are candles everywhere in the church. Since our theme is John 8:12 (When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”) we have lights all through the church to serve as a reminder of our Savior, our Light – the One who makes a difference.

Would you pray for this retreat? Things to pray about:

  • Pray that it will be significant in the lives of those that attend.
  • Pray that the guests that have been invited will attend.
  • Pray that women will be saved as a result of hearing the Gospel.
  • Pray for women that are struggling with issues to get victory by the Truth they hear.
  • Pray for our speakers to be vessels that God will use.
  • Pray that the workshop leaders will know of God’s enablement as they teach their workshop.
  • Pray that Christ will be glorified in all that is done.
  • Pray that we will be changed as a result of this retreat.

If you’re in the area I’ll look forward to seeing you tonight. If you’re elsewhere I wish you could join us! I’ll post pictures of the retreat next week. I can’t wait to share with you what the Lord does!
