A Peek From My Porch

A Peek Into My Life This Past Week

I love it when I get to go along on the church Senior Citizen’s trips.  Maybe I’m qualified age-wise, but I like to think they’re letting me tag along!  We have such a great time on these church outings.  It’s a blessing to serve these folks and enjoy a day out with them!

Last week our trip took us to Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, North Carolina where we had dinner (that’s the noon meal in the south!).  Mmmm.  That sums up the meal, but the place itself is so pretty, especially on the outside.  It’s a lovely white building with a scalloped fence and landscaped yards all around.

The meal is served family style.  There was fried chicken, swiss steak, ham biscuits (to die for!), mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, cole slaw, and corn.  Dessert was a choice of Strawberry shortcake, Chocolate Cake or Banana Pudding.  No one walked out afterwards…we wobbled!  Needless to say, not a bite was needed the rest of the day!

After dinner we went to Valle Crucis to the original Mast General Store.  There you can find all the merchandise of a typical general store.  I’ll take this place over Walmart any day!  I came home with one little treasure I’ll show you later. =)

The bonus of Mast General here is that they have a string band that plays on the back porch.  Grab a cold bottle of pop from the cooler, sit down on the porch swing and you’re all set for a perfect summer afternoon!

Here is a collage of pictures from our time there, as well as our trip to Mast General Store.

It’s day trips like these that help to stretch out summer!  Where do you go for a day trip?

The Best Thing to Do On a Busy Day

There are some days when things seem overwhelming minutes after waking up.  The demands seem great, the energy minimal.  Too many obligations for the hours that lie ahead.  That’s how Saturday morning was.  Ahead of me I needed/wanted to accomplish –

  • Bible Study and prayer
  • Exercise/Walk
  • Laundry
  • Prep for Sunday that included
    • Clothes ironed
    • Sunday dinner
    • Breakfast
    • Sunday School lesson reviewed
  • Monday blog completed, and maybe a day or two more started
  • Floors mopped and vacuumed
  • Granola made
  • Bathrooms cleaned
I put my feet on the floor and thought, “Do the next right thing.” Coffee in hand, I first headed for my time in the Word.  It was sweet and unrushed as I studied and heard from the Lord.

The next right thing was to put my walking shoes on and head out the door.  It was then that my husband informed me that friends were passing through and wanted to meet somewhere for lunch.

Not today?!  Yes, today.

I was feeling Overwhelmed.

As I walked, I talked with the Lord.  I rehearsed to myself and said to God as I prayed,
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:5,6

He will direct your paths.  Yes.  What a comfort.  What a relief.  Then I prayed out loud…

“Lord, You know what I need to get done today.  I know I can trust You.  I want to be a blessing to others and to my husband, and if that will happen through meeting our friends for lunch, then I trust You.  Help me to accomplish what is important today and let go of the rest.”

I went home with peace in my heart and the overwhelming feeling gone.  I had a spring in my step – even after a little more than a two mile walk in the country!

While I was getting cleaned up and dressed for the day, my husband sent me a text (he was still out running) –  Our friends got a late start and can’t meet for lunch after all.  While I knew our time with our friends would’ve been sweet, this was the Lord’s hand, and I knew it.  He had directed their steps, and mine, too.

All day I kept asking myself what the next right step was, and I kept my hand to the plow.  You know what?  At the end of the day, I had accomplished everything on my list, plus we had even taken off for a couple hours in the early evening to go out for supper and a drive through the country – something we hadn’t even planned to do!  Isn’t God good?

Starting my day with the Lord in His Word and prayer was, I know, the best thing I could’ve done – especially on a busy day. It’s easy to think I need to move on to my list when I’m overwhelmed in the morning, but how wonderful to see the Lord direct me and enable me to accomplish exactly what He had designed for my day.

On your overwhelming days, stop and ask the Lord to help you take the next right step.  The first thing will always be to seek Him.  He will direct you and that will make for a profitable day!

Freshen Up Friday

If you were my neighbor, you would know by watching us that we LOVE being outside!  We have spent as much time as possible on our front and back porches this spring and summer, and have loved every minute of it!  We haven’t eaten supper in the house in a very long time.  If it’s hot, we turn the porch ceiling fan on.  If it’s raining, the covered back porch keeps us dry.  If it’s too sunny, we lower the shade.  We swing, we rock, we play in the yard, we take naps on the swing that lays back, we play games on the patio table, and we eat our meals out there.

Because we enjoy our yard so much, I’ve tried to make it inviting.  But then, maybe we enjoy it because it is inviting.  In April, Southern Living Magazine had pictures of a backyard that caught my attention.  Because our yard is so deep, I wanted to break it up somehow.  The picture in the magazine got me inspired enough to come up with a plan.  I’m dividing the yard into thirds.  The first third, closest to the back porch will be a manicured yard with grass, benches, bird bath, and a path leading to the backyard.  But I needed a focal point.

Enter…Alli’s wedding pergola that was sitting in its deconstructed state with no home! A talented man in our church (who would never be caught dead or alive reading this blog b/c it’s for women) made this pergola per Alli’s request.  (Tell him we love it, Angie!)  Alli and her husband live in an apartment with no yard, so, I’m “taking care of it” for them.  I know, isn’t that nice of me? =)

This week on one of my husband’s “days to rest” (ha), he got out there and put it together!

What a husband!

It was no easy task to do this alone, or with the help of a 4’9″ wife, but he did it!

So now this is the focal point for the yard!  Behind it will be the rest of the 2/3 of the yard for volleyball, croquet and maybe a few raised beds for herbs.  This will be  a work in progress for the next several years, but I love that we have gotten things rolling!

I bought 2 climbing rose bushes to ascend up the sides of the arbor.  Even though the bushes are small right now, I can already envision it covered with blooms up to the top!

My encouragement to you to freshen up your Friday is to look at your yard – small or big, and think of something you could add to make it more inviting.  Even if you just have a small deck or patio off your apartment – what could you do to make it a liveable space?  Consider:

  • Add a small table where you could eat breakfast
  • Add small lanterns that are solar powered
  • Buy some plants right now to add some color that will take you into fall.  I bought a hanging plant this week on sale for $3 at Lowe’s!
  • Other outdoor furniture pieces are on sale right now.  Could your yard or porch use a pergola or a small bench?
  • Sweep off your porch/patio. Add a brightly colored rug.
  • Put a couple comfy chairs out so you could sit out there and read God’s Word in the morning while its cool.
  • Add a birdbath, birdhouse or wind chimes.
Make a plan and add a little at a time.  Make

your yard a place to which you love to escape.

We can’t always go away, but we can go home!
Make it your favorite place!

Stay refreshed,

Depressed About Death

Perhaps it is a normal part of life that as we age, we think more about death. I have thought a great deal about it recently.  A book I’m reading has death as the central theme.  Death has touched several families I know in recent days.  Then of course, there’s the tragedy going on in Iraq and the suicide this week of an actor.

I realized yesterday that after all this thinking about death, I was feeling kind of depressed!  Then, as many other times, I took my burden to the Lord in the morning while having my quiet time.  As I read my daily Bible reading in Proverbs 13, I read about the wisdom and blessing of the righteous man.  I read,

The law of the wise is a fountain of life,
to depart from the snares of death.

I believe that this is referring to the ability we have, through the Holy Spirit to escape sin’s trap, but this verse was also an encouragement to me concerning the truth of death.  God’s Word, the law, allows us to depart – not from death itself, but from the snares of death.  A snare is a trap.  For people who don’t know the Lord as their Savior, and for one who doesn’t know their Bible, death is a snare waiting to capture.  It’s like a trap door, ready to take one prey.
On the other hand, for those who have trusted Christ as their Savior, death holds a whole other set of words in Scripture.  I made a list of words that were connected to the believer and their death.  Here’s a sampling:
There’s nothing in that list to depress a believer!  Once again, the Truth of God’s Word is what must dominate our thinking. Remind yourself that Christ is the Victor over death.  He always wins, therefore, so will we!
If all the  talk around you about death and dying is discouraging you, take heart in the Truth!  We will live forever in heaven if we know Christ as our Savior!  With that reminder, live today to its fullest by telling someone else this Good news!  If you don’t have the assurance of heaven after you die, you can read here about how you can know you’ll have eternity with Christ when you die, and have a relationship with him now while you live on earth!

A Peek From My Porch

A Peek Into My Life this Week

I’m always interested in conferences/workshops that are going to motivate me to do something better, better myself, and my life in general.  Last year Whitney and I learned about the Becoming Conference.  It’s not a “Christian” conference, but one for women to inspire you to become more creative, purposeful and frugal.  I love all three of those ideas, so, what’s not to love about a weekend spent learning and sharpening your skills in those areas?

Last weekend was the fourth (or fifth) year for this conference.  If nothing else was accomplished, we had a fun Mother/Daughter get-away that included a night away, chocolate, and catching up on one another’s lives.  That made it worth it right there!

This conference is put on by bloggers who have a passion for DIY projects, couponing and home.  We attended workshops that included some fun ideas.

  • Christy Jordan (top middle picture) from Southern Plate shared how to make sure you have a plan for supper every night.
    • Check out her web site for the idea of putting meals together into bags so that all the ingredients are all in one place for the next supper you want to put together!  Genius.
    • She talked about keeping your pantry filled with shelf stable products like pasta and pasta sauces.  She also told us about Shelf stable milk you can purchase!  I am going to check that one out!
    • She shared about her Peanut Butter Balls that I’m going to try very soon!
  • Rhoda, from Southern Hospitality (bottom middle picture) showed pictures so that we might define our style in decorating.  Half of the battle in making your home lovely is deciding what you love! She reminded me how fun searching yard sales and thrift shops can be.  I’m challenged to hit the road some weekend around the bend!
  • Cents of Style was there again.  I love their accessories!
    • Courtney shared about personal style.  My test showed I’m a classics girl (no surprise there!).
    • One tip she shared is that lipstick is your best accessory!  So find a color you love and accessorize yourself!
    • Investing in essentials for your wardrobe is the smartest way to dress:
      • Good fitting jeans
      • Little Black Dress
      • Tailored Jacked/blazer
      • Perfect pumps
      • Amazing handbag
  • Edie from Life in Grace had some good thoughts about home.  Like…
    • As you empty the dishwasher, set the table at the same time with those clean dishes.  Two tasks in one have been completed!
    • Plan your dinner menu on your phone calendar.  Hit repeat weekly or biweekly. Now you have a whole month’s worth of meals planned!
    • Look at your children in the eye.  Let them know you see them.
    • Listen to podcasts while you work.
    • Rather than separating your artwork, put them on one wall and make it a gallery.
It was a lovely weekend, becoming more creative, purposeful and frugal.  Thanks for joining me on my porch so I could share it with you!
Is this a conference you’d be interested in?  You can watch for details for next year here, or look for Becoming on Facebook.
