Go Deep Where the Treasures Are

Bible 1.jpg

When you get up early and walk the beach, you can find some special shells that have washed up during high tide while the vacationers slept.  While visiting there recently, I resisted the urge to stop and collect some as I walked, but I could hear the crunch of the ocean’s bounty under my tennis shoes.

No matter when you walk the beach you will see treasure hunters on the search for the perfect conch shell, starfish, or other sea creature that has been washed ashore.  However, they are rare finds because of people like me who tromp over and break any that might have washed ashore.

image

If the shells above would do for your collection, then you’re in luck because they’re heaped high and easy to reach!  Maybe you could go out  a little deeper and grab this treasure…

image

However, if a hunter is looking for the perfect shell that they could wash and drop into a sandy bucket to swing along the shoreline, it’s still at the bottom of the ocean, waiting to be discovered.  These gems are for those that dare to go deep.  With finned feet and oxygen tanks, those that would get the real  treasures must dare to swim far below the surface.  They can’t walk along sunny shores with cute little sandals and sun visors – it will take preparation, effort and determination.

As I pondered these thoughts while strolling the beach, the Lord brought to my mind that this same principle is true of my time in God’s Word.  I make the choice whether I skim along the top and get something “nice,” or if I would swim out and get the precious treasures that come from going deep into God’s Word.  What would that look like?

Skim Safe and Shallow
Read a devotional book, no Scripture
Listen to God’s Word while doing something else
Read and run – no notes

OR

Go Deep
Have a plan to follow through God’s Word
Listen to the Word with Bible and journal open
Read commentary notes on any passage that you don’t understand.
Pray over the passage and let the Lord teach you.

It’s our choice as beachcombers and followers of Christ – will we stay shallow or go down deep where the treasures are?

What is your current method of studying the Bible and drawing near to God?  If you need help or feel sort of “stuck,” I would encourage you to choose a new plan, perhaps on You Version.  There are lots to choose from.  It will prompt you each day, if you need a reminder.  It will keep you on track of what to read next.  Write the things that “jump out at you” as you read.  Ask what God is saying to you in that passage – make the application.

God’s Word is alive and He wants to speak to us.  Let’s not settle for broken shells!

Lovingly,

Beauty Abounds at Biltmore

Prepare yourself to oooh and ahhhh!

We ended our vacation last week with a stop at the Bilmore Gardens.  My thoughtful husband knows how much I love flowers, so he surprised me by delaying our arrival home and taking a couple of hours to walk through the gardens, touch the blooms and breathe in deeply to enjoy all the sweetness of the fragrances.

Here’s a quick look at what we enjoyed:

English gardens are my favorite, and this depicts one so beautifully!

Look how heavily laden with roses the arbor below is!

Another view of the English Garden.

The view from inside the arbor…

I learn lots when I walk through a place like this.  The soft flowers and leaves look beautiful against a hard structure like the stone wall.  Hmmm, I’m wondering how  I can duplicate that in my yard (in a much simpler form, of course!)

image

I always wonder at our Creator and His design of each flower and tree.  What will heaven be like?  I can’t wait to see!

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Revelation 4:11

If you don’t have access to a park or garden like this, take a drive through a beautiful subdivision and get inspired to add flowers, trees and hardscapes to your yard!

Consider Their Bonds

Making critical assumptions comes all too easily for me.

I see.

I assume.

I criticize.

Over and over the Lord makes me aware that I’ve done it…again.  How thankful I am for grace that forgives, but when will I Iearn???

Recently I heard about someone who wouldn’t be participating in something awesome. Immediately my mind began making its ascent up Mount Critical, stopping to take mental photographs along the way. The next day I was in another conversation and someone else casually mentioned the same person (the one I’d criticized) and a need in their life.  My heart ached for them – then the Holy Spirit brought to my mind that this was the reason they weren’t able to participate!  They were suffering in a way that I had no idea!  Instead of criticizing them, I should have automatically assumed there was a reason, rather than assuming they were slacking!

This morning in my Bible reading I came across a simple phrase that Paul said to the Colossians –

Remember my bonds.

Paul was suffering for the Gospel’s sake.  He was patiently enduring while he was imprisoned.  What would it do for the Colossians if they would remember Paul’s bonds?  The same thing it does for me when I wisely consider another person’s trials, known or unknown:

  • It would make us compassionate
  • It would drive us to pray for that person
  • It would keep our heart tender
  • It would keep us from criticism
  • It would cause us to be understanding and magnanimous

We don’t always know what’s going on in another person’s life.  If truth be known, I’m sure we usually don’t know what others are dealing with.  We all have trials and would appreciate others being thoughtful of them, right?  Perhaps like me, you need to be reminded of Paul’s bonds, and those of the people that you live with, live next door to, work with, or those with whom you attend church.

Less criticism, more mindful of their bonds

that’s my new motto!

What does “Remember my bonds” say to you?

Refresh others by your loving consideration,

Icing That Makes the Cake

image

I love making and decorating simple cakes and cupcakes.  Last week I got to make the cupcakes for Alli’s music recital. I kept it really basic since I was making 75.   Cupcakes are the star, in my opinion, only if the frosting is delicious. It can cover for a dry cake or one that is just plain with no extra filling.

I have used the Wilton Buttercream icing recipe for years and it always turns out, and it’s always delicious!  Here’s the simple recipe:

Buttercream Frosting

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
4 cups confectioners sugar
2 tsp milk
1 tsp vanilla

Step 1

In large bowl, beat shortening and butter with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla.

Step 2

Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.

Step 3

Gradually add milk; beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Don’t over-beat, though.

Step 4

For thin (spreading) consistency icing, add 2 tablespoons water or milk. For piping, I add 1 tablespoon.

*To make the chocolate buttercream, add 1/2 cup cocoa powder.

I spoon icing into a large piping bag and then, using the large star tip, I pipe the icing on.  It’s faster than smoothing it on with a knife, and it looks so pretty! I like leaving a little border of the cake showing – it also keeps it from being too much icing.

Aren’t the music note picks cute?  Alli cut two of them with a paper punch and then glued them together with a toothpick in between, then we popped them into the icing.

Here’s a helpful guide about the decorating tips and which one to use:

There’s an excellent guide here on the technique of adding a swirl design with your frosting.

This cupcake stand was made by a dear man in our church at the time of Whitney’s wedding.  Our church has used it many times since her wedding.  It holds LOTS of cupcakes, but we just spread them out for the 75 and spaced them out on the rows.

If you’ve never taken a simple cake decorating class, many craft stores offer them.  I took the Wilton class when my girls were young, and it was really helpful in creating special cakes for birthdays, anniversaries and events.

Even if you never take a class, you now have their yummy Buttercream Frosting recipe.  It tastes good, no matter how it’s applied to the cake!  I hope you’ll make it for your next cake!

I think my favorite combination is chocolate cake and white icing.  How about you?

With love from my country kitchen,
