More Than Wrinkles: 11 Blessings of Growing Older

This week I saw a post by a Christian woman about aging. She showed pictures of herself in each decade, and with each photo, she shared what age was “doing to her” at that time in her life. There was nothing positive – no hope concerning God’s plan or His care. It was what she called, “just being real.” It was a rant about how awful it is to get older. It left me discouraged and feeling more depressed than any new wrinkles in my laugh lines ever could!

It has also made me think about what the blessings of aging could be, and also of what our biblical response must be. Is this just a cruel joke at end our life – that of getting old? Has God forsaken us who are over 60? No!!!

Coasting Into Heaven

There is so much more information on the Refresh Her podcast. Listen here.

I heard a statement last weekend that I’ve pondered over and over in my mind. Here it is:

God doesn’t want us to just coast into heaven.

Something that coasts has been in motion, then comes to an eventual stop. The comment was made toward senior citizens and was referring to their gradual decline in serving the Lord. They were once busy, but are obviously slowing down. The encouragement was to not come to a complete stop this side of eternity.

As we age, I’m sure it would be easy to think, “I’ve done my share of work (in the church, in Sunday school, VBS, being hospitable, witnessing, etc), it’s my time to be retired and rest.” However, the Lord has something for us to do for Him until He calls us home to heaven. A shut-in, an invalid, a blind person, a person with no mobility or transportation can all serve the Lord. Consider:

Finding the Golden Years Truly Golden

You can listen to this post here on Refresh Her podcast.

I like to think I’m organized, but it seems like more and more, I’m looking for something.  Recently it was a recipe.  “I KNOW it’s in this box.  I’ve always filed it under ‘Desserts,’ but I don’t see it.  I remember that it’s on a recipe card with my mom’s name at the top.  The card looks like watermelon colors.”  I could see it mentally. My eyes were peeled for that color in that box of hundreds of recipe cards of every color. If I could find that recipe I could make some delicious cookies! I did eventually lay my hands on it and found that I was skimming right over top of it because I was looking for the wrong thing.  The card looked completely different than what I pictured.

Growing up, we all heard about “The Golden Years.”  The picture that was painted in my mind was of lawn chairs,, lemonade and leisure! Those senior citizens in my mind’s eye were doing NOTHING except resting or traveling in their RV.  Seemed pretty nice in my youthful mind.

But as I’ve aged and listened to senior citizens, I’ve heard quite the opposite of that imagined scenario.  I hear Senior Citizens crying, “And these are the Golden years?!  There’s nothing Golden about these years!”  But I’ve come to understand from God’s Word that it isn’t that the Golden years are so horrible, it’s like my search for that cookie recipe, perhaps  the eyes of seniors are missing it because we’re looking for the wrong thing.

Your Modeling Career

(This is Lesson 4 in the Adorned Study) You can listen to this post here on the Refresh Her podcast.

Being only 4’9″ I never had any aspirations that I would ever be a model, but now that I’m an older woman, I’ve learned that a modeling career is indeed a part of my life! Unlike those who walk the runways, my modeling has absolutely nothing to do with physical beauty. Sound impossible? That’s what our God is all about – doing the impossible!
