Fall

A Peek From My Porch

Oh, Friends, I’m still crazy about this new place in which we live! I hope I never get used to it. This has been such an overwhelmingly wonderful experience of God’s grace, that I pray I never ever take it for granted.

We are to close on our house on Monday, which happens to be the LAST possible day we could close without the fixed rate on our mortgage not going up! God is seldom early but never late! I knew He would get the one detail taken care of in time for it to close on time. Everything is finally in order and we are set to finish the details in less than a week. Hallelujah!

I told the Lord I would tell everyone how He provided this home for us. I hope the folks at the closing are ready for a good story, ’cause they’re going to hear it! =) The short version –

  1. I have prayed for ten years for a house of our own.
  2. After God provided for the girls college tuition expenses, He opened the door for us to look at houses.
  3. We offered bids on two other homes and were turned down. I was disappointed, but God was keeping us back so we’d be ready for the perfect place for us!
  4. We found this brand new house in the country that had EVERYTHING on the list I’d prayed for, plus several other blessings I hadn’t thought of!
  5. Our offer was accepted.
  6. Our loan was approved
  7. We got to move in before closing because of only one piece of paper that was floating somewhere and needed to land in the right place.
  8. Two days before the deadline, God got everything in order for closing!
  9. God continues to provide and bless us in ways we couldn’t imagine!
  10. This is our home!!!!!

Up to this point, I haven’t shared many pictures of my new home. Why?

  1. Pictures on my phone won’t upload to my computer. Grrr.
  2. I’m trying to get things decorated a little before giving a peek!
However, I pulled out my camera rather than my phone and snapped a few pictures literally from my porch into the entryway. We’ll start there and walk our way into the house a little at a time. Maybe by the time we get down the hall I’ll have pictures and curtains up!

Drumroll:

Here’s the front door:

I’m hoping that one of the farmers around me will give me some cornstalks to add to my doorway! My girls brought me the beautiful mum for a housewarming gift! Aren’t they sweet?

My girls and I attended a decorating class at Gracious Designs last Saturday. She said that the entryway should have a “Wow Factor.”  Whatever you see first should be beautiful!!!! I found this green rug at TJ Maxx and it gives a great pop of color at the door…

Liza is getting ready to “walk the carpet”! Ha!
Just inside the door on the wall to the left is this frame:

It was my translation of this Pinterest idea:
Idea for a small wall
I have a nice long hallway. Even though it’s a little narrow, there’s plenty of room for this half table.
I’m trying to make it my “wow” factor.

I don’t have all my fall decorations out yet, but this is a start…

A friend at church made this wreath for me last year; isn’t it gorgeous?!

This year I added one thing – a leaf ornament I was given last year…

I’m still adding, subtracting and “fluffing,” so don’t be surprised if you stop by and it doesn’t look this way anymore! I’m looking for some books to pile on this table. I think that might give it the look I’m going for.

Thanks for stopping by! What are you doing in your entryway for fall?

Pastor Encouragement: Pray that you pastor will be humble and authentic in his faith, not given to pride or hypocrisy. Pray that he will have pure motives and give God glory for every gain and victory.

Husband Encouragement: Spend time in prayer, asking the Spirit to search you and know your heart for any unreasonable or unrealistic expectations you are holding over your husband. Today, try to look at your husband through eyes of grace. Verbally thank your husband for what he is already doing, and release him from any overly demanding expectations the Lord has shown you.

What’s Cookin’ in the Parsonage?

Cold fall and winter evenings call for yummy treats to enjoy inside around the fireplace or the game table.  Here are a few treats that we love …and that our church ladies will be trying at our fellowship tonight!

Microwave Caramel corn

1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white corn syrup
1 stick butter
1/2 tsp salt

Combine all of the above in 2 quart dish.  Bring to a boil in microwave, then cook on full power for 2 minutes.  Remove from oven and stir in 1 tsp baking soda.

Place 3-4 quarts popped popcorn in a brown grocery bag.  Pour syrup over corn.  Close bag and shake.  Cook in bag on high for 1-1 1/2 minutes.  Shake and cook another 1 – 1/2 minutes. You may need to cook another 1 – 1 1/2 minutes.  Pour into a pan and cool.  Be sure to shake part way through or popcorn will burn!

This is how I pop popcorn.  It’s so much cheaper (and tastier) than the microwaveable bags you purchase.  Place enough popcorn in the bottom of a dish that has a lid.  If you want butter, add a couple tablespoons when you place the popcorn kernels in the dish.  Microwave on high until the kernels slow down to a few seconds between pops.

Chex Pumpkin Pie Crunch

1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups Cinnamon Chex cereal
2 cups wheat Chex cereal
2 cups Honey Nut Chex cereal
8 oz. nuts

1.  In small bowl, mix brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice; set aside.  In small microwave-safe dish, microwave butter on high about 30 seconds or until melted.  Stir in vanilla.  In large microwaveable bowl, mix all cereals and nuts.  Pour butter mixture over cereal mixture, stirring until evenly distributed.  Add sugar and spice mixture and stir until coated.

2.  Microwave uncovered on high 5 minutes, or until mixture begins to brown, stirring every minute.  Spread on waxed paper or a cookie sheet to cool.  Store in airtight container.

**To ease the load of last minute prep, make the mix up to 2 weeks ahead and store in an airtight container.

This next treat is a low-calorie and low-fat popcorn.  You can make it as buttery as you like it…

Parmesan-garlic Popcorn

2 1/2 quarts popped popcorn, buttered
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried parsley flakes

Place popcorn in a large bowl.  In a small bowl, combine the Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, combine the Parmesan cheese, garlic powder and  parsley; sprinkle over popcorn and toss lightly.

Hope you’ll try these easy to make snacks!

A Peek Inside the Parsonage

Did you know that Friday is the first day of fall?  That means it’s time to do some Fall Nesting!  Last week I took the chance to pull out most of my fall decorations.   I have lots of them.  I began collecting them when we lived in Indiana and fall seemed to last a long time.  The colors are warm and just make home feel so different.   It’s fun, isn’t it to cozy things up?  Even just adding a warm throw or a quilt to a bed or sofa can give a warm, inviting touch that says, “sit down and snuggle in.”

Here are a few of the touches I’ve added to the living room:

Here’s my foyer table that greets my guests:

I love the addition of the light under the table.
These flowers were pulled from a patriotic arrangement at church that was headed to the trash.  They have a few days left in them!

I love using my Scrabble tiles in decorating.  We play a quick version of Scrabble that doesn’t require the board, so I leave a dish out with all the rest of the tiles, and use one or two holders to create words that coordinate with the theme or season.

Just adding a few goldish/yellow dishes and pumpkins add a touch of autumn to my cabinet.
These fall grasses were half off at Michael’s last week making this a very inexpensive arrangement.

I dimmed the lights so you could see my lit branches.  I love these!  They are $10 at Michael’s, but I had a coupon for 50% off any regular priced item.  Most everything else was on sale, but these were not, so I scored!  Five dollars for a lovely addition to my arrangement is my kind of deal!  These branches also come in white – which would be pretty at Christmas time.  All it requires is three AA batteries.

I’ve added other touches to my kitchen and front porch and back deck.  Pictures will come. That’s a peek inside my parsonage, but  here’s a lovely porch by Country Living to inspire you…

See how inviting that throw makes the chair on this porch?
What touches have you added (or will you add)?  Share your good ideas with us!

Fall Wreath

It’s October, and definitely time to haul out the fall decorations and wreaths. Who says wreaths have to be round? I love the oblong shapes, such as…

I got the idea for this on a blog. The instructions said to use a foam form. I didn’t want to do that because:

  1. They’re expensive!
  2. They’re light-weight and fly around when the door is opened
  3. I had another idea!

I had an old ugly brown frame in the basement that wasn’t being used, so I chose to use it instead. The weight was perfect for hanging on the door, it was the right shape and it cost me nothing! I found silk fall leaf garlands on clearance at Michael’s this week for $1.99, and this wreath took 1 1/4 garlands. I simply hot glued the leaves in random positions around the frame:

Ta-da!

It took me about 30 minutes to make this. If you don’t have a picture frame already, check the Goodwill store or the dollar store. Buy an ugly picture and pop the picture out of the frame!

This weekend will also be the time to make a pot of chili. We’re headed to the bike trails on Saturday and the highs are supposed to be in the 60’s. Goodbye Summer! I loved you! Hello, Autumn! You, too, are a blessing because you come from my Father’s hand.

Happy Fall! See you in church Sunday!
With love,
Fall

Feather Our Nest

I got an email from Gooseberry Patch yesterday. (Click here if you’re interested in reading their mail.) The picture above was at the top of the email. It was a reminder that it is indeed September and fall decorating is around the corner, along with cooler weather, chili on the stove, football games, pumpkins, caramel apples and hot cider.

Are you familiar with the Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks? You often find them at Cracker Barrel. I love looking at them, though I don’t own one (yet), but I pour over them when I find them in the stores. They’re full of good recipes, but also helpful tips and creative ideas.

Here was a good fall wreath idea I think I’ll try. I’m going to look into using silk mums instead of the fresh ones:

Love it!

A little birdie told me that Hobby Lobby has their fall wreaths 1/2 off this week, so if you don’t want to fuss with making your own, I’ll bet you could find a sweet deal there!

Another seasonal book series I love are the ones bySusan Branch. I ordered her fall book on Amazon a couple of years ago. I love it for the beautiful pictures she’s drawn, the cozy ideas, and yummy recipes. Here’s the cover from Amazon:

If you like good inspiration for the fall season, you need to find copies of these books! I get most all my books through Amazon and have gotten super deals!

Do you have plans for decorating for fall? Will you make a new wreath? Buy pumpkins and gourds? What is your favorite way to decorate for the season?

They say the high on Saturday is going to be 76 degrees here in East Tennessee, so it sounds like fall is just around the corner!
See you in church Sunday!
Love,
