Living Proof

A couple of Sundays ago, my husband preached a message about the importance of meditating and memorizing the Word of God.  To illustrate his point, he asked me the day before he preached this message if I would recite from the book of James at the conclusion of his message.  I swallowed hard, blinked a couple of times, nodded and said, “Sure.”

By God’s grace, I had memorized the book of James last year, and had tried to keep it fresh in my heart by frequent review.  But now, knowing I would be standing before our church congregation and reciting, caused me to grab my memory cards on which the chapters are written, and begin a serious studying for the morrow.  I said it with my audio Bible, I quoted as I dressed, I whispered the verses as I drove to church.

Then at about 12:00 on Sunday morning, as my husband finished his sermon he called me to the front.  With the plea in my heart for God’s help, I began.  “James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the twelve scribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.”  I paused briefly in between each chapter, and for time’s sake I only went through chapter three, which took me right at ten minutes.

After the service, and since then, as people have spoken to me about my reciting those chapters, I have been addressed with some eyebrow raising comments.  The statements are from sincere people, but they are truly mistaken about how I can memorize long passages of Scripture, and it has burdened my heart with the need to set the record straight.

  • I’ve been told that I have an incredible memory.  Really?  Then why do I have to park my car in the same aisle every time I go to Walmart?  Seriously, if I park anywhere else, I end up using my key fob so I can hit the lock and hear the horn sound!  No, I do not have a great memory.
  • I’ve been told that I have a special gift for memorization.  Why then did I have to come up with clever ways to memorize historical facts in school, and usually ended up doing fairly poorly!
  • I’ve been told that I have more time than others to spend on things like memorizing Scripture.  Follow me around for a day or two, you’ll change your mind.  Every single day is packed full, morning til night.
  • Lastly, I’ve heard over and over that memorizing just comes easy for some people.  One reason I love memorizing long passages, is because I don’t have to try to remember references.  I struggle with that so much!  So, even that isn’t easy for me.
If all these statements are not true, how then, can I memorize long passages?  It comes by hard work, discipline and God’s grace.  I’ve asked the Lord in recent years to give me a greater love for His Word, and He has.  Because I love it, I want it.  I want more of it.  I want it in my heart.  Therefore, I have chosen to memorize chapters of Scripture.  It is a choice to work on it every day.  It is a choice to work on it throughout the day.

It’s not another thing I add to my day – it’s a part of my routine.  I have the verses written on cards, and I keep those cards with me so I can work on them while I’m taking my morning walk, while I curl my hair, while I cook or iron.  I do it while I’m busy with other activities that don’t necessarily require my thoughts.

Can you say the pledge of allegiance?  Of course you can. How many songs do you know my heart?  Do you know a riddle, rhyme or joke by memory? How many phone numbers or addresses do you know?  How did you learn all that?  You learned it because you said over and over again.  It becomes ingrained in your mind.  The same can happen with God’s Word.  It is my choice to review the chapters I’ve memorized so I don’t forget them. Without review, those passages would be gone in a matter of months (maybe weeks).

What I’ve accomplished in memorization is very minimal, but that is not my point.  I desire to learn more; not for memory’s sake, but so I’ll know and understand my God better; so I’ll love Him more and be better equipped to serve Him.  It’s easy for each of us to make excuses as to why we can’t memorize, but by God’s grace we can.  Here’s one woman who is living proof.  If this forgetful  50-something lady can memorize, so can you!

If you see me strolling up and down the parking lot at Walmart, please help me find my car!

I’m currently striving to memorize the first chapter of II Peter.  What are you working on?

Day #24 House Cleaning Challenge

Do you have any areas in your house where to tolerate the mess?  For me it’s closets.  My bedroom closet was disorganized, and I really didn’t know how to fix the war zone mess.  But today, I was determined to get in there and find a solution!

Here’s where I started:

Before:

After major straightening, vacuuming the floor and discarding some items, it looks like this:

After:

Before:
In the left bottom corner of this picture you can see part of a blue Tote.
Inside that were all my purses.  It was impossible to get to one without
dumping all of them into the floor, due to the fact that the closet doors don’t open
to the width of the entire closet.

Yikes!  The shoe rack and floor were a disaster!

So, I went on Pinterest to research purse organization and I found this lovely idea:

This is not my closet shelf (I wish it was!) but this inspired me.

After:

It was hard to get a good picture of this, but I had a shelf in my basement that I wasn’t using, so I scooted some things over in my closet and made room for this three tiered shelf inside.  It’s perfect for purses, backpacks and my overnight bag!  This will make finding a purse much easier!

Oh, and an extra bonus of my cleaning today was finding a $12.97 gift card for Bed Bath and Beyond and just under $2.00 in change!

But for real, the greatest benefit is opening those doors and seeing everything clean and in order!

Did you take the challenge today?  What did you accomplish?

A Peek Inside the Parsonage

The parsonage life (life in full-time ministry) is full of some wonderful blessings.  Seeing people saved, and then watching them grow is the highlight of it all!  Then there is the joy of the fellowship with our church congregation each Sunday and Wednesday, and again at any time of Bible study or other activities associated with the church.

There are times of visiting our people in their homes, in the hospital when they are sick, or having them in our home to encourage them, perhaps through counseling in a difficult time or in preparation for marriage.

There are high spots of going to meet the brand new baby that’s been born and being able to cuddle that little one and to rejoice and  have prayer with the new parents.  There are the weddings; those happy celebrations of young love and all the fun that goes with helping them prepare for their big day.  It’s all of these times together that knits our heart to the hearts of our people.  We grow closer to them, and love them so very much.

But then there are hard times, like funerals.  An article I posted recently from another pastor’s wife said that when a pastor and his wife lose a member in death, it’s like a part of their own family.  How true.  Our church family becomes like family to us, and when we go through those hard hours of waiting with the family while their loved one is dying, it rips our hearts out.  We grieve for our own loss, and we grieve with the family that is experiencing the death firsthand.

Such was the case this week as we witnessed one of our dear members exchange the hospital for a celestial home with His Savior.  Jim Ward was a man who loved his God.  He had in infectious smile and a hearty handshake!  One of his responsibilities at church was that of “greeter.”  He served this role well; welcoming folks as they walked in and treating them to one of his outrageous smiles and engulfing handshakes.  No one could have entered and not felt warmly greeted when Jim was on duty!

Jim was also a  very generous man, never flinching at the opportunity to share what he had with others. We were the benefactors many times of his unselfish heart.

Jim was also a hero to our country.  He began serving in the army when he was only 14!  He was so big for his age that when he lied about how old he was, he was never questioned!  He received many medals of honor for his heroism.  Because of his service, he was granted a military funeral.  It was here, in this beautiful military cemetery in Johnson City, that Jim was buried on Monday.  Hearing the rifle shots and taps being played tugged at our hearts, but we were comforted as my husband brought our attention back to the Scriptures and reminded us that Jim was not here.  Absent from the body; present with the Lord. II Cor. 5:6;  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.  Ps. 116:15

Monday was one of those tougher days in the parsonage, but it was also a day of blessing because we know that we will see Jim again. What a wonderful day it will be when we are all gathered on heaven’s shore!  There will be no days of sorrow as we serve the Lord then; there will only be joy!

Oh, and when we get there, you’re welcome to come have a peek inside my parsonage  mansion!  All you’ll see is smiles!

Today’s housecleaning challenge is to clean the linen closet.  Since I did that last week, I think I’m going to tackle a bedroom closet.  Come back at 6 PM and I’ll post my pictures.

Day #23 House Cleaning Challenge

The challenge was to vacuum and sweep all the floors in the house
My progress was that I:

  • Dust mopped the bathrooms, kitchen, living room and hallway.
  • I wet mopped the bathrooms and kitchen
  • I used the Johnson One Step Wax on the hardwood
    • This stuff takes off the old wax and puts on a new coat all in one step!
  • I vacuumed all the carpeting
Using my new Swiffer Cover (that I made) on the floors.  It works GREAT!

Before waxing

After waxing (and before finishing the vacuuming job on the stairs.  That’s why the vacuum extension is in the hallway).

Did you do today’s challenge?  Have you made any Swiffer covers yet?

The Painful Results of a Check-Up

A wise friend of mine used an analogy as to why she attends ladies’ retreat each year.  She said she goes to her doctor each year for a check-up; she attends ladies’ retreats for the same reason!  Oh, I like that!

I had a check up this weekend too; it was of the spiritual nature.  The check up took place at The Wilds Christian Camp.  It was actually a group appointment with over 300 women in attendance.  The Physician (Christ) used an assistant, Debi Pryde, to do some probing and poking into our hearts.  The results were all individual as we listened to the Spirit of God give each of us a diagnosis and a remedy for our troubled hearts.  We must have peace with God so we can experience the Peace of God.      He is the peace that will calm us in the midst of our storm.  We must believe the truth of God’s love for us so we won’t question His ways.  Many workshops also aided in our spiritual health – topics on loving the homosexual, training our children in God’s Word and watching for the fingerprints of God directing our paths.  Yes, we got some good medicine to bring home.

Did you ever get home after a check-up and find you don’t feel so well the next day?  The arm they gave you a booster shot in is sore!  The medication the doctor gave you for the arthritis pain caused your stomach to be upset.  So, too, after a spiritual check-up!  You come home to apply what you’ve learned and BAM! You get hit with painful times.  There is opposition from the enemy – Satan.  There’s opposition of your flesh (or your family’s!).  It’s not easy to obey.  As a matter of a fact, it can be downright uncomfortable at times.  But just like when we continue to take the medicine, our bodies will adjust.  If we continue to obey we will reap the fruit down the road.

So take heart, ladies!  If you’ve made a decision at some recent spiritual check-up, be ready for the painful days to follow, but keep your eyes on the Physician.  He knows what He is doing and you can trust Him.  Obey what He has revealed to you and you will enjoy great spiritual health!

And let us not be weary in well doing:
for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Galatians 6:9

Today’s house cleaning challenge is to sweep and vacuum the whole house. That’s my plan, plus a wax job on the hardwood. I’ll update at 6 p.m.
