Freshen Up Friday

The Place of the Skull, very possibly where Jesus was crucified

This is my favorite weekend of the year and it starts with today – Good Friday.  It’s not a religious day – it’s a day of the greatest love and it’s the day that changed history!  Today as we remember what Christ did for us on the cross, I pray we will each see with new eyes our wonderful Savior and His amazing sacrifice for us.

Could I encourage you today to celebrate?  We typically wait to celebrate until Easter, but that long weekend began on the day that Jesus was crucified on the cross, on Friday.  I imagine how sad the hearts of those that loved Christ were.  But you and I have “read the back of the book” and we know that He arose!  He is alive today. Therefore, we can celebrate!  We have victory over sin, a home in heaven, and a relationship with him today all because He willingly laid down His life for us on this Friday.  Yes, this is a good day.  Good Friday.

How could you celebrate?  Consider:

  • Serve Hot Cross buns today – if you can’t make them from scratch, then make cinnamon rolls from a can and put the icing on top in the shape of the cross.
  • Go to a park – either alone or with your family and read the crucifixion story from the Bible.
  • Sing some songs about the cross – At Calvary, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Old Rugged Cross, At the Cross.
  • Talk about what the disciples and Jesus’ followers must have been thinking and feeling at this time of the day on that Good Friday.
  • People are always asking, “How are you?”  Why not purpose to tell them how special today is to you and why!  They asked!  Tell them!
Be refreshed today as you contemplate the cross!

Because of Christ,

A Peek Inside the Parsonage

I enjoy hearing about people’s favorite things.  You can learn about products, places, and sites you otherwise would never know was out there!  So I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things with you today as you take a peek inside the parsonage.

My New Favorite Tool:

I’ve recently become the owner of a Kindle Fire HD.  I had resisted owning one before because I love books, but when my husband put this one in my hands on Valentine’s Day, it was love at first sight.  =)  It’s so great to pop my Kindle into my book bag and know that it’s the only thing I have to take with me! I had about a dozen magazines downloaded, as well as that many books when I boarded my plane to Indiana last weekend.  No worry about not having enough reading material on hand!  Then I learned that Money Saving Mom has started a site just to share daily deals from Amazon for Kindles.  It’s called e Reader Girl.  Each day she shares about books that Amazon is listing for free or for a very small fee.  You need to check the price before you download; the “free” status doesn’t last forever.  I have gotten some great books for my favorite price – nothing!

A Couple Favorite items at Sam’s Club:

Aside from great produce and huge bulk baking items, Sam’s Club has a multi-Grain Tortilla Chip that is addictive.  The good thing about them is that they’re on the healthy side!  They have just the right amount of salt.  If we are low on these, we just about have to make an emergency run to town!  They’re great with salsa, but also just out of the bag! Only three dollars a bag!

Did you know that you can buy Panera Bread’s Soup at Sam’s club?  Their Broccoli Cheddar is so good.  I think it was about $11 for the two containers, but that’s a whole lot cheaper than what you’d pay at the restaurant.  Each container serves about 3 servings.  You can freeze these, too!

My Favorite Cleaning Tool:

These little erasers are amazing.  One day I used them on my white toaster and found that they took of the scum that nothing else would touch.  They work great on appliances.  I read that they are great on the flat cook tops, taking off what nothing else could remove.  They will take the soot off your jar candles.  It keeps them looking pretty instead of nasty on your counters.  They’re great for scuffs on doors and fingerprints on walls and door frames.

My favorite Phone Apps:
Photo Grid is a great place that allows you to make collages with your photos.  Like this…

I told you recently about Pair; an app for Couples.  Hope you downloaded that one so you can stay connected to your sweetheart.

The Droid Light has been a blessing when I pull up to my door at night and it’s dark.  I pop that super bright light on my phone and I have no problem finding the doorknob to put the key in!

One app that I use every morning is the You Version Bible app. I have just finished reading through the Bible in a year using the blended reading plan.  I have really enjoyed it.  They have many translations of the Bible, an audio feature and a verse for the day.  Love this!

Okay, now it’s your turn!  What is your favorite in any of the categories I listed?

Responding to Bad News in Marriage

Photo
We all love to hear good news, don’t we?  My younger daughter, Alli got some REALLY GOOD NEWS this weekend; her boyfriend asked her to marry him!  The fact that he wants her for his wife was good news! My husband and I couldn’t be happier for them; this was good news to us too.  The proposal was a minute by minute plan that Andrew pulled off with the help of several of their friends.  The wedding will be next May, so there’s lots of time for planning, preparing and dreaming!  Fun times!

I pray that their marriage will be full of days and years of “good news,” but the reality is that every marriage is also made up of some situations that contain some bad news.  No one enjoys it, but it’s those tests and trials that  strengthen the relationship.  There can be the bad news of…

  • a job loss
  • the depletion of funds
  • illness
  • pregnancy problems
  • sin issues
  • differing opinions
  • child-rearing issues
  • and so on…
What is a couple to do when bad news is the order of events for the day?  Do they pack up and each go their own way? Of course not.  Here’s my advice for myself, for Alli and any other wife who gets some bad news instead of good news in a day of marriage:

  1. Run to the Lord FIRST.  Before you do anything else, go to your Quiet place and tell the Lord what’s hurting your heart.  Psalm 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
  2. Open your Bible and let the Lord speak Truth to you. Write down what He tells you. Psalm 119:76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.
  3. Keep the issue to yourself if it’s a problem with your husband (unless we’re talking about abuse). Don’t go call your mom, your sister or friend and spill all. Let love cover it.
  4. Do a loving deed for your husband – even if you think he’s the one with the problem.  He’s probably feeling pretty low; do something to encourage his heart and let him know that you still love him. Proverbs 21:14a A gift in secret pacifieth anger.
A neat detail about Alli and Andrew getting engaged on March 23rd, is that on that day, my parents were celebrating their 58th anniversary!  I know that they’ve had many occasions where some “bad news” came to their marriage, but it’s my prayer that you and I, and Alli and Andrew will last 58 years because we’ve handled it in a way that brought honor to the Lord.

Have you had any good news lately?

With love,
Denise

What’s Cookin’ in the Parsonage?

I arrived home from Indiana safe and sound Saturday night around 11:30.  Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.  As you can imagine, there was no cooking in my kitchen yesterday afternoon.  My sweet husband insisted we go out.  I didn’t argue!

However, I have a great recipe that I made last week to share with you today.  It would be a great recipe to serve on Sunday night after church while having friends over!  The key to having guests over is doing prep work ahead of time.  That’s what I love about this recipe for Easy Pizza Dough.  You can make up these individual pizza crusts, par bake them, then pop them in the freezer.   I found this in Southern Living years ago, and it’s been one of two recipes I always use for homemade pizza.  These make a yummy thin crusted pizza.

The dough mixes up super fast in a food processor.  However, if you don’t own one, you could do it in a mixer or stir it up by hand.

Easy Pizza Dough – Makes 6 (8″) pizzas

1 cup warm water (100° to 110°)
1/4 cup olive oil
1 (1/4-oz.) envelope active dry yeast
2 teaspoons honey
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Vegetable cooking spray

Preparation

1. Process first 4 ingredients in a food processor 20 seconds or until yeast is dissolved and mixture is bubbly. Add flour and salt; pulse 6 to 8 times or until dough forms a ball and leaves sides of bowl, adding more water if necessary.
2. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray; lightly coat dough with cooking spray. Cover and chill at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.

Dough after being in the fridge 2 hours.

3. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 6 equal portions; roll each portion into an 8-inch round. Use dough immediately, or follow instructions below to make ahead.
Note: Place Easy Pizza Dough rounds on 2 lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 400° for 7 minutes. Let cool 20 minutes. Place in zip-top plastic freezer bags; freeze up to 3 months. Let pizza crusts stand at room temperature 20 minutes before adding toppings.

Getting ready to pre-bake

Pre-baked crust

Crusts pre-baked and ready for the freezer

To bake:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Spread about 1/3 cup basic pizza sauce over each pizza crust; top each pizza with 1/2 cup cheese, 1/3 cup cooked sausage, pepperoni, and/or other desired toppings.
Bake 8-10 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese is melted.

Now, if you need a little individual serving of a yummy dessert for a Monday, here you go:
Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Cup from Number 2 Pencil.  I made this recently.  First I made a trial cup.  I let my resident taste tester sample it (my husband!).  He gave it a double thumbs up!  It only needs a little scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  Beware!  Once you read this recipe, you will know that you can have a chocolate chip dessert in literally less than 5 minutes!  You have been warned!

Ingredients

1 Tablespoon Butter
1 Tablespoon Granulated White Sugar
1 Tablespoon of firmly packed Dark Brown Sugar
3 Drops of Vanilla Extract
Small Pinch of Kosher Salt
1 Egg Yolk (discard the egg white or save for different recipe)
Scant ¼ of All Purpose Flour (slightly less than ¼ of a cup)
2 heaping tablespoons of Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips

Instructions
Start by melting your butter in the microwave. Butter should just be melted, not boiling.
Add sugars, vanilla and salt. Stir to combine.
Separate your egg and add the yolk only to your cup. Stir to combine.
Add flour, then stir again. Measure a scant, slightly less than full, ¼ cup of all-purpose flour.
Add the chocolate chips, and give a final stir. Now your mixture will look like cookie dough.
Cook in microwave 40-60 seconds, start checking for doneness at 40 seconds. Mine takes 50 seconds. Do not cook past one minute, just like a regular cookie, this will continue cooking as it cools. If the cookie is dry or cake like, try less time.
Serve warm.

Do these recipes look like something you’ll try?  I hope so!  They’re both easy, delicious, and fast!  What’s been cooking in your kitchen?

Freshen Up Friday

One great way to freshen your spirit, your attitude and your heart is to attend a Ladies’ Retreat!  That’s where I’m headed today!  I have the blessing of speaking in Shipshewana, IN for Community Baptist’s (of South Bend) first ladies’ retreat.  I’m looking forward to meeting with these ladies and sharing what the Lord has laid on my heart.  Along with the blessing of sharing God’s Word, it’s bound to be tons of fun!

These kind of events are usually annual for most church groups.  Boones Creek Bible Church held our own retreat this past fall, and it was wonderful!  A month from now, (April 19, 20), we will go to The Wilds to be a part of the retreat they are holding for ladies.  The weekend is always such a blessing!  I hope you’ve made plans to attend with us, if you’re in the area.  Don’t wait for someone to beg you to go, just sign up and pray that the Lord will use it to refresh your walk with Him.  I promise you, you won’t go home disappointed!

Are you going with us?

I fly home Saturday night, so I’ll see you in church Sunday!

Be refreshed,
