The Picture of Discernment

About nine years ago our church graciously gave my husband a 40-day sabbatical (a period of paid leave) that started on Christmas Eve. During the first week of January we went to a lovely mountain home in South Carolina to rest. This home was located high up in an area known as “The Cliffs.” We were staying in a section of homes at the end of the road. We could look out the large windows in the house and see the tiny lights of the houses far below us twinkling in the darkness.

The weather was quite blustery.  The wind was howling when we unloaded our belongings from the car and the snow was flying. After we got our things moved into the house, my husband headed back down the mountain to go get our younger daughter who had been staying the week with her sister. He would be gone about an hour and a half.

While he was gone, I made supper and then put it in the oven to stay warm until they returned. I then decided that this would be a good time to snuggle into the comfy sofa with a cup of hot tea and work on a Bible study I was doing. The wind continued to howl outside the windows as I studied, banging things against the house and making all kinds of imaginary people stomp right outside my doors! Then the wind got so strong that the power flickered, then went out! I put my hand up in front of my face and couldn’t even see it! It was pitch black! I grabbed my cell phone and hit the power button to activate the light, then ran into the kitchen to look for a candle and matches. Aha! Here was a lovely scented candle up on the counter. Matches…matches….? Nowhere. Then I remembered that the stove was gas. I got the wick lit at the burner, then made my way back over to the sofa, relieved at the light this little candle brought to my very dark situation!
That illustration is what discernment does in our lives – it brings light to an uncertain situation. Discernment is the ability to distinguish between two things using the wisdom of God’s Word. Discernment allows us to see issues clearly. We so desperately need to cultivate discernment so we will know light from darkness, truth from error, best from better, righteousness from unrighteousness, purity from defilement and principles from pragmatics.
How does a person get discernment? You ask God for it, and go to His Word  to find it. Ask Him for it before you get into a crisis. It would have been better for me if I’d have prepared for the storm before the lights went out! If only I had gotten the candle lit prior to the crisis moment of darkness I wouldn’t have been so frightened. We can’t plan for a crisis in our lives, but we can prepare ahead of time by seeking God’s face for discernment from His Word. We must store it up in our hearts so it will be ready when those moments come that threaten to shake us at the very foundation of our faith. Proverbs 22:3 tells us that a prudent person looks ahead and sees the possible danger in a situation and they do what they can to avoid it, but the foolish person plunges ahead and suffers the consequences.
One wise way to prepare ahead of time is to memorize Scripture. We will all face death at some time – in the life of a loved one, or our own. What Scripture do you know by memory that will sustain you at that time?
If you’re married you know you need God’s wisdom to be a godly wife. What passages are you meditating on when it gets hard to love your husband?
We are all tempted to fly off the handle and “give so-and-so a piece of our mind.” What do you tell yourself from God’s Word when that temptation comes?
Ladies, storms are coming. We must prepare ahead of time so we’ll have the Light for the darkness!
In I Samuel 25, we read that Abigail responded to her husband and to David in a way that was so wise. She didn’t fall apart, come unglued, or go have a crying spell. She acted in a wise, discerning way. Her husband Nabal never changed, and the fool in our life may never change either. But we can remain a pure, courageous, discerning woman that glorifies the Lord even in the midst of a crisis.
By the time my husband and daughter got back to our mountain retreat, the lights had come back on, though they continued to flicker often. But now there was nothing to fear because there were lit candles throughout the house. I wouldn’t be caught unprepared again! I pray that I’ve learned that same lesson in my spiritual life!
How have you recently seen a woman display discernment?  How are you preparing to be discerning yourself?

Fourth of July Salad

July 4th.jpg

I hope you’re getting to spend some time today with family as you celebrate our great nation! We’ve been invited to join friends for a picnic lunch.  I’m taking my watermelon salad.  This is really refreshing on a hot day!  I’ll add blueberries to this and call it a Red, White, and Blue Salad!

Could I encourage you to make sure to spend some time in prayer for our country?  Let’s ask God  to help us to be brave as we hold the standard of righteousness in our personal lives, our cities and our country!

What are you cooking/grilling/baking or churning up today?

With love from my country kitchen,

A Look Through My Lens

My phone’s camera is with me nearly all the time.  If you had looked through my lens this week, this is some of what you would have seen:

This was at the fashion show in Jonesborough last weekend. I had so much fun participating!  I modeled the Spartina cluster Pearl necklance and the wristlet purse (love them both! Came home with neither…too pricey for me.  But it was fun wearing them for a little while!!).  I also modeled my dress with a cross-body bag and pendant necklace for a more casual look.  Fun times!

I spent a few days in KY with my parents this week.  This was a reading spot one afternoon.  So lovely and restful!

When you’re in the hammock and look up, this is the view.  This is a Trumpet Vine.  I am thinking that I need this over my arbor next year since the Japanese Beetles eat my roses for breakfast, lunch dinner, morning snack, afternoon munchies and midnight cravings! Grrr!

My dad has a hook up on the pergola with a rope attached so you can keep the hammock swinging.  Genius!

How good does that look?  This was lunch at my sister’s house.  Salmon Croquettes, potato salad, tomatoes and muffins.  It was as delicious as it was pretty!

We had a nice visit after lunch in her gorgeous living room!

Time with my parents is always special.  Their quiet natures and lovely home make for the perfect place to visit and rest.

Upon returning home, I found our cherry tomatoes red on the vine!  This is one of my favorite sights all summer long!

I’ve never really been a country girl, except for a few years in high school, but I’m learning that after the hay is cut in the field, they bring the cattle in to feed.  I love it when I look out my front door and see the cows strolling by!  This was my view just last night.  It just makes me smile!

That’s my week!  What was your favorite view here?

Have a lovely weekend celebrating our country’s birthday!

Stay refreshed,

Weeding Out Bitterness

Recently while weeding flower beds at my parent’s home, I was tugging at some stubborn roots.  The weeds had grown tall and strong.  I put my hand around the base of the stems, planted my feet firmly and gave a yank.  Finally, the roots gave way and I had to steady myself lest I fall backward!  As my gaze fell back on the soil, I saw a beautiful plant that had been hidden under the weeds.  It wasn’t even visible before.  It almost seemed to stretch out in its now roomy quarters, with the weed removed. We would’ve never known that plant was there if we hadn’t removed the weeds!

Roots…removal…hmmm, a passage of Scripture came to my mind at that moment!

Hebrews 12:15

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the gace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

The picture of the weeds and the stubborn roots before me is exactly what bitterness will do in my life.  It anchors itself down deep.  It destroys.  It blocks out the beauty of walking uder the control of the Spirit of God.  It keeps relationships from being loving and grace-filled.

First I must search diligently.  Then at first sight of that weed of bitterness, I must snatch it up – not from the top where it will break off and continue to grow, but at the root – where it started.  I must go to its source and rip it from my heart.  Confession will do that.  I must admit it’s there and call it what it is.  That means no finger pointing or blaming, but admision of my own sin.

The next part is the flinging out of that weed to the trash pile.  That happens when I let go of the issue that caused the bitterness.

Just. Let. It. Go.

After my weeding job was done, I washed my hands throughly, ridding myself of the mess it caused.  Looking back on the freshly manicured garden, I could smile at the sight of the growth that was showing itself proudly.  So, too, the place where my bitterness was is a clean, fresh spot in my life now.

Do you have a bitternessthat is growing and defiling you?  Ask the Lord to forgive you, and then look for the new growth that will appear in its place!

Refreshing Summertime Pasta Dish

In the summertime I love eating light pasta dishes.  To me that means sauces with fresh veggies that require little or no cooking.

This recipe today is a new one from a recent Southern Living Magazine.  We loved it!  The marinated tomatoes take the longest amount of time, but that’s only to let them sit and absorb the flavors.  You could add grilled chicken to this dish if you wanted to add some protein.

spaghetti 2

Spaghetti with Marinated Tomatoes

Ingredients

8 ounces thin spaghetti
1/2 cup small mozzarella balls

Preparation

Cook spaghetti according to package directions; drain and return to pot. Spoon in Mouthwatering Marinated Tomatoes and desired amount of vinaigrette; add mozzarella balls. Serve immediately.

Marinated Tomatoes

Ingredients

2 pounds assorted tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 small shallot, minced
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves
1/4 cup loosely packed Italian parsley leaves

Preparation

Gently stir together tomatoes, minced shallot, crushed garlic, vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper, and set aside for 1 hour and 45 minutes, tossing occasionally. Stir in basil leaves and Italian parsley leaves. Serve immediately.

I added a popover and a green salad and it was a delicious and satisfying meal!

On a hot day when you don’t want to heat up the kitchen, this is the perfect recipe!  Add toasted garlic bread and you’ll have the perfect summer meal!

What dish do you love to fix when it’s hot outside?
