With the upcoming of our 45th anniversary on June 20th, we decided that we would try to do something each day of the month of June that would “celebrate us!” Dale’s taking the odd days, and I am taking the even to create a tiny remembrance. These have been very ordinary events, but we’re trying to use our celebrations to reminisce over the early days of our relationship and marriage. It’s been fun – both to create the ideas for each day, and then do them! How about a little peek into a few of our “celebrations” so far?
In the first year of our marriage, we would get together with other teachers that we worked with in the Christian school and map out yard sales. Then on early Saturday morning, we would all go hunting for great finds! We ended the morning with breakfast at Shoney’s breakfast bar. I had seen that a neighborhood near us was having their annual neighborhood sale, so I knew it would be a good morning to revisit that old tradition! We headed out at 8:00 and drove to the very busy subdivision.
I always keep a list of things I’m looking for so I don’t just buy random things I don’t need. We found several things on my list! I have wanted a focal point for my pergola and when I found this beautiful water fountain (I don’t have it plugged in), I knew it would be so pretty in that spot. When the seller told me it was $8, I knew it was mine!!
The other thing I found that was a special blessing was a table for one of the brick circles of our patio. I designed this patio when we moved into this house, and have slowly added to it over the years. We have used this area so much! I needed a table for out back on days that was cooler, or early evenings. This wooden set was purchased at a great bargain and I couldn’t be happier with how it looks. It will always hold the memory of finding it together for our 45th anniversary!
Another “celebration” was simply pulling out old letters we’d sent to one another while we were dating and separated by three hours. I read them out loud in the car while we traveled last week. Oh, the memories and laughs we had!
On Sunday evening, Dale purchased a light supper for our evening meal, picked it up and brought it home. We ate it out at…yep, our new wooden table. Then he read the memory cards I had typed up for him on our 25th anniversary. Those were memories of our dating, engagement, honeymoon, and highlights of our marriage. We both cried multiple times!
I made plans for a croquet game in the backyard, followed by washing my Jeep. That was a flashback to a date we had after Dale had broken up with me. This was the date that brought us back together!
Anniversary celebrations don’t have to be extravagant, but they should definitely be sentimental! Next weekend we’re get to enjoy dinner on two nights. I’m really excited about that and will be sure to share the memory with you!
