The Blessing of Taking a Day of Rest

A couple years ago, when life was feeling very overwhelming, I began implementing a day that I call my Sabbath (Rest). It’s been on Friday’s because that’s the day that works best for my schedule. I sleep in as long as I’m able. I spend longer periods of time in God’s Word and prayer than on the other days of the week. That in itself makes this day so special!

I move slowly through the day and try not to do any heavy kind of work. I also try to schedule time with a friend for coffee or lunch. The fellowship of another believer is so refreshing. Last week I met a friend at Starbucks located in Barnes and Noble. The seating area is so quiet and a little secluded. That was also restful!

Let me take a side step and tell you about the delicious beverage I ordered, at my daughter’s recommendation.

It was an iced latte with almond milk, two shots of white chocolate mocha, and strawberry cold foam. It was delicious! It tasted a bit like a liquid chocolate covered strawberry! I highly recommend it!

Back to my Sabbath rest – another thing I like to do is a project with my hands. I always encourage women that if you work with your hands all week, work with your mind during your Sabbath, and if you work with your mind weekly, work with your hands when you’re resting.

Last weekend I was so thankful that I carved out time to do a project that had been in the wings since the springtime. I made zippered pillow slipcovers for my living room sofa pillows. I love the down feather inserts. Mine are 22″, so they’re nice and big! I found decorative fabric on clearance at Hobby Lobby, so I made two pillow covers for about $11. I’ve made envelope slipcovers in the past, but decided I wanted to make these with zippers. Once I tore the zipper out three times on the first one got the hand of it, the second one was a cinch!

The nice thing is that the zipper method uses less fabric. I’m so happy with how they turned out.

My project the weekend before was taking a $70 shower curtain that I found for $10 and turning it into kitchen window panels. This was a very simple project. I simple cut the curtain in half and then hemmed it the length of the window. I love them!

There’s no way you’d know these were intended for the shower!

If you’re feeling like you’re on a carousel, I’d highly recommend you trying a Sabbath morning or afternoon…or a whole day, if you can swing it. If you’re in a busy season of life with children at home, perhaps scheduling one Saturday a month, or just part of a day would be more feasible. I know a couple who has a great plan for their young family – the husband lets his wife sleep in on Saturday. He takes care of the children, and she has the whole morning for rest and spiritual refreshment. Then, at noon, they switch roles! I think that’s brilliant! We don’t work so we can rest, we rest so we can work. It gets our body, heart and mind ready for what’s coming.

Life can feel busy for all of us at one time or another. I would encourage you to make time for rest that will equip you for the work that is to come. đŸ©·
