Gifts For Your Husband Who Has Everything

The Christmas season passes so quickly, doesn’t it? Many years ago my husband and I realized that we weren’t taking the time to really enjoy the season as a couple. Christmas would come and go and we hadn’t really taken time to enjoy our own decorations or spend time with one another. It was then that we began exchanging gifts for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Here’s how we did it – we would purchase small gifts for one another and beginning on December 12th, we would sit near the tree and exchange one gift each night. Sometimes we’d enjoy a Christmas treat as well. We lingered. We listened to music. We talked and laughed. It seemed to stretch out the holidays for us and it was wonderful.

We considered picking up that idea again for this year, but as I thought and thought AND thought about what I could get him, I got frustrated before I even started shopping. Then I came up with another idea that was even better than the original plan!

Fall-Apart Boston Butt Roast

I’m always on the alert for meat sales when I’m at the grocery store, aren’t you? About a month ago I came across a nearly eight pound Boston Butt Pork Roast at Kroger marked to less than $4! It was a huge piece of meat and I didn’t need it at the time, but I knew it would serve a crowd at some point in my future! I packed it away into my large freezer, and in the meantime, I researched a recipe that would make it fall apart when cooked. I found the perfect recipe at Farmhouse Harvest’s site.

Winter Decor Inspiration

The temptations at Hobby Lobby are almost unbearable! ALL that beautiful Christmas decor pulls me into imaginative thoughts of turning my home into a scene from a Hallmark movie! I recently had to talk myself out of purchasing a giant, adorable sign that was shaped like a cocoa mug with cute wording on it.

“This would be so cute on the back porch near the fire pit!”
“We aren’t out there that often in the winter.”
I could put it on the front porch, too!
It’s not Christmas decor – I could use this all winter.
“Then where will I store this giant sign after winter is over?”

At that point the sign was placed back into its spot on the shelf. The thought of having to find space for storage was all I had to consider. I don’t want to keep buying stuff to make my home feel wintery and/or Christmas-y. I want my decor to be more conducive to the season of winter, adding little touches of Christmas and the birth of Christ. But we all know that the pull to keep buying pretty decor is strong and real! I have learned in the last few years that the best way to decorate is to decorate for whatever season it is and engage all the senses.

God’s Surprises

You can listen to this post on Refresh Her podcast.

Some surprises are special and fun like an unexpected visit, a party or a gift in the mail, but other surprises can jolt us, like when plans get changed, hopes get dashed, or a path is turned completely into a dead end. We can feel derailed and “out of control.” But the truth is that the situation isn’t out of control; it’s simply out of OUR control. Psalm 50:12 is truth that God is in control of everything – including the interruptions in life. But what are we to do when life gets turned upside down by events that shock us?
