What Can a Young Mom Do?

Last Sunday we passed around a sign-up sheet to help provide meals for a young mom in our church who just had another little one. One of the ladies that signed up is a young mom and is relatively new to our church. When I thanked her for helping with this ministry she said, “Oh, when I had my boys we were blessed with so many people that brought us meals. It was such a help to me that I said then that I would always try to provide meals for new mothers.”

That really struck a cord in my heart. Here is a young mom doing something to be a blessing to another mom because she knows what a help that can be!

Proverbs 11:25
The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

We are all to be giving, and giving liberally or generously. This Proverbs goes on to say that when you are a blessing to others you receive a blessing. I know that this young mom stays home with her boys and that keeps her busy all day, but she has found a way to reach out. How needy that is. Home can turn into a prison where you simply care for your own family and fail to realize that there are things you can do, even as a young mom, to be a blessing to others and serve the Lord. Our families are our first priority (after spending time with the Lord), but often we don’t see beyond them to other ways we could be serving, even while in the busy days of motherhood.

Just last night I saw two other examples. One mom of four came to our CARE ministry (visitation/outreach) with her three older children while Dad stayed at home with their one year-old who was getting over a virus. This mom wanted an opportunity to reach out, so after work, Dad came home, they had supper, then she brought the children to CARE. What teamwork!

I was talking to another one of the young moms in our church about our upcoming VBS and she said, “Can I help make refreshments for it?” She, too, is a stay-at-home mom who is looking for a way to serve others outside her home.

Could I also suggest:

  • Ask your pastor if he has anyone that needs a card or phone call
  • Invite an unsaved lady in your home for coffee
  • Serve in your church nursery
  • If your husband serves in a ministry at your church, help him with it. One young mom in our church provides muffins or coffee cake each Sunday that her husband substitute teaches their Sunday School class. She’s helping him minister to those members!
  • Mentor one of the teen girls in your church
  • Ask your pastor’s wife and other staff member’s wives how you can pray for them, then write them a note telling them you are praying. I have a bunch of women that do this for me, and I can’t tell you what a blessing it is!

Let me encourage you young moms to make your family your first priority, but then don’t think you’ve done all you need to do. There’s a world outside your backyard that needs Christ’s love – saved and unsaved alike. What could you be doing to share His love?

With thanks for the amazing young moms at BCBC,

Word to the Wise Wednesday – Being a Good Hostess to Overnight Guests

II Kings 4:10
Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

Being hostess to overnight guests doesn’t really require that much because our guests only really need what the woman and her husband provided for Elisha in the passage above. Do you have a bed, table, and a light? Then you can have guests in your home just as this dear woman and her husband did for Elisha. What a blessing they must have been to him!

I was recently privileged to have my sister and brother-in-law here for an overnight stay. They were headed home from vacation and decided to stop in to break up their trip (and to see us, of course!). After they left I got to thinking about the fact that now that it’s summer, many homes will have overnight guests. It may be family passing through, or cousins coming to visit cousins for a week, or Mom and Dad visiting their children and grandchildren. I have been seeking wisdom on how to be a better hostess; to be prepared for company, to make my guests know that I’m truly thankful they stopped in, and to make them feel at home with us.

I’ve rounded up some tips and thought I’d share them with you. Maybe there’s a nugget that will enable you to make someone’s day really special because they stopped at your house!
  • Make sure the linens are clean and the room has been uncluttered.
  • If you don’t have an extra room for a guest room and are using one of your children’s rooms for your guests, make sure the children know not to bother the guests or go in there without your permission.

  • If you have a picture of you and your guest from a previous visit, frame it and place it in the room where they will be staying.

  • Place magazines on the bedside table that they might enjoy. A Bible and daily devotional book are also great things to have for your guests to pick up and read.

  • Be sure you have an alarm clock somewhere in the room.

  • A dish with a few nice chocolates is a nice touch, if you know they’d enjoy that treat.

  • You could also make up a basket of snacks if your guests are going to be staying a couple/few days. Crackers, bottles of water, fresh fruit, and granola bars or cookies are some suggestions.

  • Let you guests know where they can find towels and washcloths. Make them easily accessible.

  • Use an old overnight suitcase to display small bottles of lotions, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, in case your guests have forgotten any of these items.

  • Make sure there’s a mirror in the room.
  • A chair is a nice accessory, and a lamp over it or beside it for reading.

  • A vase of fresh flowers on the dresser is a nice way to welcome your guests.

  • Have a light on in the room your guests will be staying in if they’re arriving after dark.

As for any meals that you’ll be serving, make sure that you know if they have any dietary needs so you can cook accordingly. Here are a few things to make the meal special:

  • Try to prepare things ahead of time so you don’t spend all your time in the kitchen. Freeze muffins, cake layers and cookies. Prepare Ziploc bags with the dry ingredients for pancakes so all you have to do is add the liquid ingredients. If you’re having BLT’s for lunch, cook the bacon ahead of time and refrigerate it.
  • Have breakfast items available. Either set things out – Cereal, fresh fruit, muffins and a pitcher of milk, juice and coffee and let them serve themselves when they are ready for it. Or if you feel up to it, provide a hot breakfast of pancakes or egg strata.

  • Make the table attractive. It doesn’t have to be spectacular, just special. Flowers and pretty napkins are a great addition.

  • Have a guest book for your guests to sign before they leave. It will serve as a scrapbook of sorts of all the guests that have come to your home.

Perfection is not a goal for there are no perfect homes, perfect meals or perfect hostesses! Go for clean rooms, filling meals and welcoming hostess, and your guests will be glad they can return to your home again and again!

What has made you feel welcome when you’ve visited in someone’s home?

Happy hostessing,

A Spiritual GPS

I am married to a GPS – a global positioning system! Dale can get anywhere and he’s been everywhere! My dear husband has rescued me and my girls from perils on the highway more times than I can count! The amazing thing is that we can call and frantically say, “I’m lost!” and he will always follow that with, “Tell me what’s around you.” “I don’t know – curvy roads, a pasture, a sign to an old church…” His famous last words are, “I know exactly where you are.” He will then proceed to give step by step instructions to get us back on the right road, complete with curves in the road, landmarks, and words of encouragement!

Just this past weekend our daughter called in a carload of girls with the frantic tone of “Help!” He got them off the country road in the mountains of North Carolina, back to the right place and their long awaited destination – Walmart in Brevard, NC! He was their hero!

Sunday in church, I saw a theme for the morning service – it was Meat or Milk. It was mentioned at three different times in three different settings. I took note. I knew the Lord was wanting to say something to me about that. Consider these verses:

1 Corinthians 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

Hebrews 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Hebrews 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby

The theme here is that babies desire milk, but as we grow in Christ we should desire the meat of the Word so we can be mature and be used of God (Heb. 5:12).

When a Christian has been feeding on meat of the Word, they can then help someone who is lost. They have been there and they know exactly where a lost person is. They could lead that unsaved person to Christ.

When a Christian has been feeding on the meat of the Word they also know their way around their Bible – they have a spiritual GPS – a God Pointing System! They can open to Scripture passages to help a discouraged friend, remind themselves of God’s promises, or teach a Truth that someone needs to learn. They have been feeding on the Meat and it’s evident in their lives!

Are you good at navigating yourself and others spiritually? If not, there’s only one clear direction for your life – become a student of the Word and feed on the Meat!

How are you currently feeding on the Word?

What’s Cookin’ in the Parsonage?

Have I told you just how much I love to cook? It’s truly not a chore for me. One thing I love about it is the variety of foods and recipes to make. I love to try new recipes. A dear friend has given me a subscription to Taste of Home Magazine and I enjoy it so much. This month’s issue was full of good things to make. I have about a dozen ear marked to try this month.

Sunday’s dinner menu was nothing new, but it was pretty much ready when we walked in the door and that’s always a good thing on Sunday! Why does my stomach growl ferociously on Sunday morning and not on weekdays? :0 I served:

Roasted Turkey Breast w/fresh herbs
Mashed potatoes with Turkey gravy
Roasted asparagus with Parmesan cheese
Rolls
Lemon blueberry Pound Cake (more about this later!)

I have to share one recipe with you that I tried earlier in the week that was so good! It’s called Roasted Vegetable Salad. I served grilled chicken with it and it made a great summertime meal. You can vary the vegetables – I used what I had. I failed to take a picture of mine, but it’s really colorful and appealing.

Roasted Vegetable Salad

1 lb. small red potatoes, quartered

2 medium ears of sweet corn, halved (I used frozen kernels)

1/2 lb. baby portobello mushrooms, halved

1 med. sweet red pepper, cut into strips

2 medium leeks (I used red onion)

1/4 C plus 2 Tbl. olive oil, divided

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1/2 lb. fresh asparagus, cut into 2-in. lengths

2 garlic cloves, minced

1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

2 cups cubed French bread (I toasted these on a cookie sheet while the vegetables were cooking)

10 Cherry tomatoes, halved

1 cup crumbled Feta cheese

Dressing:

1/3 Cup olive oil

1/4 Cup red wine vinegar

1 Tbl honey

In large bowl, combine the first five ingredients. Drizzle with 1/4 cup oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Place in two greased 15 x 10 x 1 in baking pans. Bake at 425 degrees 20-25 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, saute asparagus in remaining oil until tender (just a couple minutes). Add garlic and pepper flakes; cook 1 minute longer. Cut corn from cobs; place in a large bowl. Stir in the bread, tomatoes, cheese, asparagus and roasted vegetable mixture. Combine oil, vinegar and honey, drizzle over mixture and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Another recipe I made this week was Lemon-Blueberry Pound Cake, not from Taste of Home, but from my Cooking Light Cookbook. You would never know this is a light recipe; it tastes just as yummy as any regular pound cake with twice the fat grams! Be watching for the recipe on my blog this week.

What’s been cooking in your kitchen?

Lone Ranger Christians

One day this week as I was listening to Revive our Hearts, I heard Nancy make a statement about the Christian who thinks they can “go it alone.” This is the person who isn’t faithfully connected to a local body of believers. She stressed the importance of being actively involved, supporting and being supported by the fellow believers there. My heart fully agreed!

Wednesday night in prayer meeting I was met with one reason we need the fellowship of other Christians. I heard three dear ladies in our church stand and give testimonies about opportunities to share the Gospel this week – one was in a store and chatted with a customer, one on her job at the hospital, and the last talked with a man over the phone – a stranger dealing with bank business! As I sat and listened to their testimonies my heart was stirred with the desire to be used of God in that way. I know the Lord has brought those opportunities my way, but I’ve been distracted by my own busyness or the task at hand and missed them. I came home determined to ask God to open an opportunity for me, then to look for it!

As I had my prayer time this morning I said, “Lord, help me to be faithful to you today and to see the opportunity to witness and not let it slip past me.” As I went to the grocery store I was looking. I was at Ingles and it was early afternoon and the store was relatively quiet. I was nearing the end of shopping when I remembered that I needed to go to the produce department and talk with one of the workers. The week before I had accidentally dropped my pen down into the case holding the corn on the cob! The produce worker had told me he would clean the cases and keep my pen for me. However, when I asked another gentleman about it, the pen had not been retrieved.

“Oh, I’ll come back later”, I said. This young man kindly answered, “No, you go finish your shopping. It will only take me a minute. I’m happy to get it for you!” I watched him go get a cart and begin unloading the produce on that stand. I went on my way to get my last few items, thinking about how kind he was and how grateful I was that my nice pen would be in my purse again! The Lord quickly brought to my mind that the kindest way I could thank him would be to share the Gospel with him.

As I made my way back to the produce stand the worker looked up at me, pulled a Cross pen from his shirt pocket and asked, “Is this what you lost?!” Indeed it was, and I thanked him for his kindness and told him how much I loved shopping in their store because everyone was always so helpful. Then I said, “You’ve been so kind to me, let me share something with you.” I handed him a tract that says, “Will you go to heaven when you die?” I said, “This is even better than finding a lost pen, because it holds the Truth about how to be sure you can go to heaven. This is the best news there is.” “Yes, you’re right,” he said. “Thank you!”

I pray that he took the time later to read through it, and that he will trust Christ if he isn’t saved. I’ll be back in that store in the near future and I’ll be praying for an opportunity to ask him what he thought about what he read. I walked away knowing that this was God’s appointment and that He had given me this sweet opportunity to share about my Savior.

I wonder if I would have been looking for that chance if I hadn’t been challenged by those sweet ladies at church? I doubt it. I would have been on a mission – my mission instead of God’s. So thank you, Linda, Sue and Ethel for being faithful to witness and for sharing your testimonies at church. God used you in my life! I also say, thank you, Lord, for the Church – what a blessing it is! I wouldn’t make it as a Lone Ranger Christian!

Praying you’ll be in a Bible believing church this Sunday,
