Freshen Up Friday

Ever have a piece of nostalgia and not know quite what to do with it?  Perhaps it’s an item like…

your high school or college graduation tassel.  Is it packed away in a box somewhere because you know you should keep it, but you don’t really want that thing hanging from your rear view mirror the rest of your life!  But what is one to do with it?   I have an answer for you!

Purchase a clear ornament in a craft store…

Then tuck the tassel inside.  Let the long loop  stick up out of the top and hang the ornament from that loop.
Now you’ve created a nostalgic ornament that will bring back sweet memories of those school days.  And…you’ll feel better about putting that tassel to some good use.  Perhaps now you can buy a cute Yankee Candle freshener for your car and hang it from your mirror instead.  There, doesn’t your car feel  all grown up?

Let The Fire Die

A fire in a fireplace is a great thing!  A fire in your lap…not so much!  You may say, “A fire in your lap?  That’s dumb!  Who would want that?”  The answer is no one!!  Proverbs 26:20 says, Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.  You see, a person who bears tales (gossip) causes strife.  It’s like having a fire in your lap.  No one wants it!

The strife that tale bearing causes is as hurtful as a fire burning in your lap.  Even if the words are true, they are painful to hear.  What do you do with this “story” after you’ve heard it?

I recently had someone share a “fire” with me.  The words were true, but I didn’t need to hear them.  They stung.  It was like sparks flying from a hot ember, touching my very heart.  Trying to deal with the burning coals for the next day or so wasn’t easy.  They needed to be extinguished with the Water of God’s Word.  I was reminded of words that were flung at Christ; untrue accusations, ugly names, words of doubt about Who He really was.  What did He do?  He answered not a word.  Not a word.  For me to pass on what was shared would be to pass along the fire.  No one else needs this in their lap.  I told my Savior, and of course He already knew.  He applied the salve of His love and comfort.

Do you know some “hot news?”  Keep it to yourself.  It could be a burning ember that will scorch the hearer.  The fire in my fireplace needs to keep burning, but the fire that needs to go out is the one that will cause strife.  May we each let that talebearing fire cease.

A Peek From My Porch

I had so much fun decorating and preparing for Thanksgiving!  Want a peek?  Okay…

I added a touch of turquoise to my table decor and loved the “pop” of color it added.

In the top left hand corner is a sample of my “name cards.”  They were sugar cookies, shaped and decorated to resemble pumpkin pie.  Each one had a guest’s name on it, then was tucked inside a cellophane bag and tied with a ribbon.  (The plate is upside down because this was the day before, and I didn’t want any dust to settle on the plate before the meal!)

I bought two bunches of fall flowers from Sam’s club and used them to make my arrangements.  I put them in turquoise containers that I snagged for about $7 each at TJ Maxx.  I placed them on silver trays so the color would bounce off and give an extra splash of beauty.

The best part of our get together were those that came to celebrate with us!  Here’s the portion of our family that were able to come, then a few of my other favorite memories…

It was a wonderful weekend, full of great fellowship, praising the Lord for His blessings in 2013, and of course, plenty of food!

I have to share one hilarious moment and a memory from the holiday I don’t want to forget.  I had the rolls rising on the counter and nearly ready to head into the oven when everyone arrived.  Two men in the family (who will remain unnamed because I love them), came in with crock pots with their wife’s food inside.  They proceeded into the kitchen, looked for a place to set their crock pot down, and spotted a counter with dish cloths lying over cookie sheets.  That looked like a perfect spot for both of those huge, heavy pieces of equipment.  Plop.  Job done.  They then proceeded to the appetizer table for cheese and crackers.  I walked into the kitchen and saw the crock pots sitting there and wondered what this was all about.  I lifted the crock pots to find the rolls completely flattened out underneath.  Gasp!  They did rise a second time as my mom said they would, though they were a little lopsided But they of course tasted the same as they would have otherwise.  We all got a laugh out of that.  The rolls are no longer  called Butterhorns.  Their new name?  I can’t decide if I should call them Crock Pot Rolls, Smashed Rolls, or Resurrection Rolls (after all, they did rise again!).  =)

Do you have a funny memory from Thanksgiving?

Hosting a Pinterest Party

Our church has had the fun of having a Pinterest party in our gym for the last several seasons.  It has created a lot of interest and curiosity as to how one would go about having one.  In order to answer the questions, I have asked, Christina Farless, the heart, planner and brains behind our Pinterest party, to share with you all the “how-to’s” of hosting one.  I pray that you’ll hear her heartbeat and motive of the parties she’s initiated, then pray about what you could do with this information in your own home or church.

Please meet Christina…

She’s a fun-loving, always smiling young wife and mom of two sweet boys.  She is very creative and resourceful.  Creating a home for her hard working husband, homeschooling her older son, training her toddler and assisting in many areas of the ministry at Boones Creek Bible Church keeps her busy, but she’s always on the look-out for ways to reach out to those that don’t know Christ.  Hear her story…

I love Pinterest! I’m a crafty person and I like to spend time in the kitchen, so Pinterest was made for me! I didn’t want to be one of those people that pinned and never did anything, so I have made it a point since day one to try most of what I pin. One day I saw a pin about hosting a Pinterest party at your home (and having heard Pastor C encourage us often about having people in our homes & building relationships) I knew this would be right up my alley! My invitation list quickly became more than I could fit in my home. After talking to Mrs. C about using the church gym, we decided to just host it as a ladies’ fellowship for our church. There were a few church ladies and a few of my friends at that first one, and the parties have continued to grow, doubling in size since the first one! Pinterest parties are a wonderful outreach!! People who would never come to a church service would LOVE to spend a day eating and crafting, even if it is in the church gym! This last Pinterest party we had more visitors than “home folk”, which was an answer to prayer for me! I so want to use this not just to bring our church ladies together, but to grow the body of Christ by bringing in the lost!

The question I get now though is “How do have a Pinterest party?!” Well, here is your answer!
The first thing to do is start a board on Pinterest of ideas that are easy, fairly inexpensive and can be done in just a few hours. This is not the time for making that yarn-wrapped wreath with felt flowers that takes 2 days to finish! You don’t have a Pinterest account? Well, first…get one! But if you can’t or don’t want to, just pick crafts that you know how to do and can teach someone else how to make!
Here’s a link to each of my boards for the parties we’ve had:
Once you have an idea of the crafts you want to do, check out some prices around your local stores for supplies for those crafts so you can get a rough idea of how much it will cost each person. I set the price at $5 per person for the first party and we had about 5 “stations”. At the end of the party we had enough come in to cover the costs of the supplies. But this time, there were 10 “stations”, some with crafts we had done at previous parties and still had supplies for and some new.
There was going to be a wood craft, so I set the price at $10, knowing wood is expensive. (Praise the Lord, we found a local company that donated their scrap wood and my wonderful, handy husband spent several days cutting it to the right size and sanding it.) I’ve been able to let every lady make one of each craft, rather than choosing just one or two.
Now that you have your crafts and a price, set the date and start inviting people, sharing at least some of what the crafts are, people are more willing to come if they know ahead of time what they’ll be doing. It may be that one craft they’ve wanted to do & haven’t had time for! I also made and event on Facebook and shared the Pinterest Party page so people could see the pins. We also made up a small flyer for people to hand out. We also ask that everyone bring a Pinterest-inspired dish to share.
Once I have a rough idea of how many people are planning to come, I start purchasing or gathering supplies for that many people, plus about 10-20 more.  I also like to make a sample of the craft for several reasons. One, people have something to pick up and look at, instead of just a picture. Two, I know exactly how difficult that craft is and about how long it will take. Three, I can then take the info from the pin and my experience and type out my own easy to follow, step-by-step instructions.
The day of the party, I asked for a lady from our church to be at a registration table to welcome everyone, collect the money, and have them make a name tag and a label for the snack they brought. We start with snack, to give the stragglers time to arrive and then we get to the most important part of the day. We have a short time of devotion where there is a clear gospel presentation given. Mrs. C has been a wonderful speaker for every party we’ve had! There have been many lost ladies that have heard the gospel that would have never came to church for any other reason. AFTER the gospel message, I give them instructions about what the crafts are, how many they get to do, etc.
At our latest Pinterest party (after researching Pinterest parties on Pinterest!), I had a photo booth that looked like a pin,
brown paper bags (collected and donated from a local grocery store) that said “Saw it. Pinned it. Did it!”for people to take their goodies home in
and door prizes that I put together of other pins. I also had other crafts that we had done at previous parties, or that others and I had done on our own, as decorations. I encouraged the ladies that if they liked one of those crafts, to have a few ladies in their homes and make those crafts together. I pray that in the coming months I will get to see many pictures of those parties on Facebook! (Have you planned yours yet, ladies?!)
You can, of course, do this on a much smaller scale in your own home easily. Just pick one craft and have everyone chip in for their supplies or have 3-4 ladies each bring all the supplies for just one craft and then you each get to make one of what everyone brings. I hope to hear about many more of you hosting your own Pinterest parties soon!

I hope this answers your questions and also inspires you to host a party yourself.  December would be a really great month to get crafty with some friends!  If you have any questions for Christina, please leave them in the comment section here and we’ll have them answered for you!

Is this something you could do?  I’d love to hear about your party!

With love,

What’s Cookin’ in the Country?

I took the easy out yesterday; we had Thanksgiving Day leftovers for dinner!  It was the first time for the leftovers, so I enjoyed them!

However, the day after Thanksgiving, while my company was still here, I wanted to have a completely different menu.  I always enjoy Italian food after a rich meal of turkey and dressing, so I tried a new pasta dish; Company Baked Ziti.  I was able to make the whole dish ahead of time and put it in the freezer.  It made two 10 pie plates full!  So all I had to do while my family was here was take it out of the freezer to thaw, then pop it into the oven.  I added a salad and rolls and we were set!  It was very good and indeed Company worthy!

Company Baked Ziti
Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef
1 lb. sweet Italian ground pork sausage
1 onion, chopped
2 (26-oz.) jars spaghetti sauce
1 (16-oz.) pkg. ziti pasta, cooked
1 (16-oz.) pkg. sliced provolone cheese
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation
Brown beef, sausage and onion in a skillet over medium heat; drain. Stir in sauce; reduce heat to low ad simmer 15 minutes.
Layer in a greased 13″x9″ baking pan as follows: half the pasta, provolone cheese, sour cream, half the sauce mixture, remaining pasta, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce.
Top with parmesan cheese. Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until hot, bubbly and cheeses are melted.

This roll recipe is from Taste Of Home and is so good, and is such a time saver!  Confession:  My rolls didn’t look as pretty as the picture below.  More on that story on Wednesday’s post!

Make-Ahead Butterhorns
Ingredients
2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
  1/3 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  2 cups warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
  1 cup shortening
  1 cup sugar
  6 Eggs
  2 teaspoon salt
  9 cups all-purpose flour, divided
3 to 4 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add the milk, shortening, sugar, eggs, salt and 4 cups flour; beat for 3 minutes or until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
Turn onto a floured surface; knead lightly. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 2 hours.
Punch dough down; divide into four equal parts. Roll each into a 9-in. circle; brush with butter. Cut each circle into eight pie-shaped wedges; roll up each wedge from wide edge to tip of dough and pinch to seal.
Place rolls with tip down on baking sheets; freeze. When frozen, place in freezer bags and seal. Store in freezer for up to 4 weeks.
Place on greased baking sheets; thaw 5 hours or until doubled in size. Bake at 375° for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from baking sheets; serve warm or cool on wire rack. Yield: 32 rolls. I make my rolls a  little smaller and get about 48 rolls!

Are you eating leftovers from Thanksgiving?  Or do you opt for a totally different flavor like Mexican or Italian after the holiday is over?

With love from my Country kitchen,
