Family life

Did You Have a Good Time?

There’s a memory that my parents and siblings and I have from years gone by. Our family had been out all day on some type of adventure. When we returned, a neighboring little girl, one of seven children, hollered from her house across the street, “Did you have a good time?”

The memory of that still makes us chuckle. That that little girl would note that we were gone, and yell at us as soon as we pulled into our driveway was cute. I wonder if it was because her family times were a far cry from “good.” My memory nods in remembrance at the strained family relationships that went on over there.

Her question is a good one, though. I will ask the same of you about yesterday – “Did you have a good time?” Perhaps you only did your normal things at home, or only went to work, or only took care of children all day but in all those “only” situations, did you create any fun? Yes, create. Sometimes fun things happen just because of where we are – at an amusement park, on vacation, swimming, or at a special party, but those days don’t happen all the time. All the “only” activities happen every single day. So if you don’t create fun on those days, who will? If you don’t stir up some creativity in your schedule, your meals, your nighttime routines, your trip to the grocery store, who will? It’s up to us, ladies.

Having a little too much fun, perhaps? No, not at all!

Okay, you don’t have to go to this extreme, but when our girls were small we got a pair of these silly glasses for everyone in the car. When we were stopped at a red light, we would put these on and then lean over and look at the people stopped at the light beside us. You should have seen their reaction! It was hilarious. We had fun, and I think we also brightened their day as well. It’s kind of hard to have road rage when you look at someone wearing Groucho Marx glasses!

What could you do to stir a little fun into your day? It doesn’t have to be something silly, it could be just the fun of eating breakfast outside on the deck in the morning instead of inside at the table, or creating a fun meal for your family instead of boring normal stuff. A friend of mine is having a Christmas in July dinner this week. I LOVE that idea! So, you have your challenge; run with it!

Proverbs 15:16
He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Eat up!
Oh, and, have a good time!

What are some things you’ve done to stir up some fun?

A Peek Inside the Parsonage – What To Do While Waiting

Yesterday I shared about my “Holding Pattern.” If you’ve felt the circular swing in your own life, I wonder what you do during those times? Frankly, I’ve had a hard time staying motivated to do the necessary things – like dust and vacuum! Oh, I’ve done it, but I’ve had to pick myself up by the seat of my own britches and do it out of sheer discipline, rather than the usual desire.

It’s easy to get a cynical or non-care kind of attitude when we feel like things are spinning, but the fact of the matter is, this day has significance. I can still impact the life of another person (starting with my husband and those that would enter my doors). There are things I can do that will have an impact for eternity. There are little things that must be done just for life to keep moving forward (clean underwear is always a good thing!). It’s the little stuff that needs our daily attention and must be cared for – even when we’re “bummed” or disappointed, or still waiting for things to work out that even helps the time to pass in a profitable way.

The advice that I have been giving ladies in recent months is what I’ve had to do myself –

Sounds very simplistic, but it helps the frantic wringing of the hands and the pacing. Stop and ask: What is the next right thing I could do right now? Pray and ask the Lord. Wait. Then do it. It might be a phone call you need to make to inquire about this situation you’re waiting on. It might be you just need to get in the kitchen and prepare supper or just go change the baby’s diaper! The blessing is that when you keep making the “next right choice,” soon you’ll find yourself staring into the face of the answer of the thing to which you’ve been waiting!

So, excuse me, but I’m off to do make the NEXT RIGHT CHOICE…that would be the laundry.

What next right choice do you need to make?

With love from the parsonage laundry room windows,

waiting

A Holding Pattern

I’ll never forget my first plane ride. I was 15, traveling by myself to visit my aunt and uncle in Michigan. I was a bit apprehensive, but the businessman seated beside me kept me informed of all that was going on around me, to help alleviate my fears. When we could see that we were close to the Detroit airport, we realized that we were circling in the air, rather than landing. We were in a “holding pattern” I was told. The pilot came over the speaker to tell us that the landing equipment would not drop down, and we would have to circle until it was safe for us to land. I was informed by the man beside me that we could possibly have to slide down an evacuation chute! This was not exactly the way I wanted my first trip in the air to turn out! However, the pilot soon told us that it was only the light in the control panel that wasn’t working! The equipment was down and ready for our safe landing. I’m not sure if someone on the ground or the air traffic control could see the landing gear in place and radioed the pilots, or it they simply replaced the bulb on the panel, but no matter, there would be no more circling uselessly in the air. Whew. We were all relieved!

For what seems to be a very long time now, I’ve been in another kind of “holding pattern.” It’s the kind where the Lord is saying, “Wait. Wait.” We can’t see why. It doesn’t always make sense, but we know that far better than the air traffic control, God sees the whole picture – the present and the future. He wants to lift us above ourselves and see everything in light of His plans. The Psalmist said, “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me” (Psalm 138:8). I’m so thankful I can rest in Him while we circle one more time!

What is bogging you down today? Trust the Lord to pilot you. He knows what is best and you can trust Him! He loves you and He will bring you to a safe landing.

Pork roast · Side dish

What’s Cookin’ in the Parsonage?

Pork roast and mashed potatoes with rich dark brown gravy. MMMMM. Sunday dinner at its finest. BUT what if you top that roast with a blueberry sauce? Yes, please. That was our Sunday dinner yesterday. Though the pork roast was a little on the dry side (maybe from being in the oven too long, I’m thinking), the blueberry sauce compensated nicely!

Pork Roast with Blueberry Sauce
Mashed Potatoes with Gravy

For the roast, I simply seasoned it with salt and pepper, then browned it in a little oil. I place it in a roasting pan and added about a cup of chicken broth. Cook low and slow.

Blueberry Sauce – (From Taste of Home) They served this with pork chops, but it was great with the roast, and they also suggest using this on chicken. I don’t think you could go wrong serving this on anything!

  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon fresh sage or 1/4 teaspoon dried sage leaves

Directions

  • In a small bowl, combine the garlic, pepper, salt and cayenne; sprinkle over pork.
  • In a large ovenproof skillet coated with cooking spray, brown pork chops. Bake, uncovered at 350° for 10-15 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 160°. Remove pork and keep warm.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining ingredients. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened, about 8 minutes. Serve with pork. Yield: 4 servings.

Later in the day, we had a Sunday school fellowship and I signed up to bring a side dish. I made this Mexican Cornbread Salad from Southern Living.  We love this salad, and this has a Mexican flair. You could tone down any heat by just using regular cornbread (which I did). I’d also suggest you mix the salad ingredients just before serving. This is how it is usually served so that the cornbread isn’t dry. It makes a pretty salad, and tastes just as good as it looks!

Southwest Cornbread Salad
  • 1 (6-ounce) package Mexican cornbread mix
  • 1 (1-ounce) envelope buttermilk Ranch salad dressing mix
  • 1 small head romaine lettuce, shredded
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • rinsed and drained
  • 1 (15-ounce) can whole kernel corn with red and green peppers, drained
  • 1 (8-ounce) package shredded Mexican four-cheese blend
  • 6 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled
  • 5 green onions, chopped
Preparation

Prepare cornbread according to package directions; cool and crumble. Set aside.

Prepare salad dressing according to package directions.

Layer a large bowl with half each of cornbread, lettuce, and next 6 ingredients; spoon half of dressing evenly over top. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients and dressing. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.

Have you had a Cornbread Salad? If not, you need to try this! What’s been cooking in your house this week? Any blueberry recipes?

Freshen Up Friday

How about a few ideas for freshening up your spending?

July is a great month for Clearance sales. Why not take advantage of the extra savings and start doing a little Christmas or birthday shopping? Get a storage container that you can use to stash your gifts in and go out with an eye for the people on your list. TJ Maxx and Marshall’s are great places for low prices, but then add a clearance sale to it, and you can get a great deal! I love those yellow stickers!

Buy produce like berries that are on sale right now and freeze them for the cooler months when the fresh fruit is so expensive. I’ve been buying blueberries for $2 a pint in recent weeks. I buy one or two extra and put them in freezer bags. To use for muffins, you can just pop them in the batter in their frozen state. If I want to add them to yogurt, just run them under tepid water a couple of minutes.

Do you have a Kroger near you? If you do, and you also sign up for the Kroger card, you can load a coupon on your card every Friday for a free product. I thought there must be a gimmick, and was a bit leery, but I tried it out and it’s an absolutely free product! I got a jar of salsa and a bag of Orville Redenbacher popcorn snack free last week. This week the coupon is for Quaker Chewy Bars. The nice thing is that thought there is only one day to load the coupon on your card, they give you a couple of weeks to redeem the coupon!

So there you go! Save yourself a few bucks by taking advantage of some great deals and refresh your budget and your wallet!

It doesn’t cost anything to be in church, except some discipline. Hope you’re planning to faithfully attend and participate this Sunday! We don’t go out of obligation, or to stay saved, we should go because we love God’s house and we ARE saved! Hope to see you there!

Be refreshed,
