How a Rotisserie Chicken Became a Grace Gift

This week we encountered a simple little promo gesture on the behalf of Kroger, but it brought a sweet truth to our hearts. On our way home from Kentucky last week, we stopped at a Kroger store to pick up something at their Deli for a light supper. We found some sliced turkey in the deli and a package of Hawaiian rolls that would do nicely.

As we were finishing making our purchases at the self-checkout, a worker approached with a cart full of chicken. She said, “Would you like a free chicken? I have fried chicken or rotisserie.”

Surprised by her question, I asked to be sure I had heard correctly – “Excuse me?”

She repeated herself – “Would you like a free chicken?” The deli was getting ready to close for the day, and they were giving away the leftovers to their customers!

“Of course!” I answered. “I’ll take a rotisserie chicken! Thank you so much!”

As we stepped out of the store, my husband said, “Well, thank you, Lord!” It was indeed a grace gift and we were grateful.

The next day was a full, busy day that seemed to get busier as the hours passed. As the supper hour approached, we had surprise guests in our home during suppertime. We were glad they were there, but suddenly I was aware that we were all hungry. What would I prepare on the spur of the moment? Then the Lord brought to my mind the chicken in my fridge. I excused myself and went to the kitchen. I warmed the chicken in the oven, cooked up some rice, reheated Pinto beans I had cooked earlier in the week, and warmed the rest of our Hawaiian rolls. The table was set with the help of a sweet, young guest, and in less than thirty minutes I was able to offer a place at the table with a bounty of food for the six of us, all because my Father had preceded us with the blessing of a free chicken.

As I considered what the Lord had done, I thought about how we often say, “The Lord is never late, but He’s seldom early.” But here He was, providing for our needs BEFORE we ever knew we had a need. I was able to offer a seat at our table because of a heavenly Father Who offered me a seat at His the day I was saved. He promises to meet our needs, yet how often I look into the future and fret and have heart palpitations about the unknown. Now here the Lord reminded me that the future is unknown to me, but not to Him. He can and will provide in His omnipotence and His providence in ways that are known only to Him.
(Matthew 6:8 Therefore do not ye be made like to them, for your Father knoweth what is need to you [for your Father knoweth what is needful to you], before that ye ask him.)

A free chicken may seem like a little thing, but that little bird was a precious reminder to me that I can trust my God.

Whatever you need to trust Him for today, be sure that He is aware of your need, and He is able!
