Fear’s Bondage

Image result for fearful woman

If you’ve ever seen sacrificial love demonstrated, you know that it happens when one person loves so much that their own needs, feelings, and apprehensions are cast aside, so that they might lavish love on someone else.

One Sunday when the children were called down to meet my husband for Pastor’s Pals (a time of Pastor teaching the children an object lesson from the Bible), one brother came rushing ahead, his arm extended and his fist thrusting a wrapped sucker forward like a soldier wielding his sword in battle.  As he reached my husband he said, “Here, Pastor C.!  I have a sucker for you!”  His younger brother, right on his heels, and not wanting to be outdone, opened his very wet mouth, pointed to the hard candy that he was sucking on, and proclaimed, “Here Pastor C!  I brought you my piece of candy!”  What a clash of pictures – one of true sacrifice to demonstrate love, and one giving of the “leftovers” in the appearance of love.

In Luke 7 we see another picture of sacrificial love.  The passage reads:

36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.

37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

This woman, who had formerly had the lifestyle and reputation of a harlot, but has been forgiven of her sin, hears that Jesus is eating dinner at the Pharisee’s house and goes to anoint his feet with ointment.  She cast aside all the fears that might have plagued her in order to step inside the doorway of love.
What might she have been afraid of?

  • rejection – What if the Pharisee sent her away?
  • denial – What if Jesus refused her lavish gift?
  • being cast out – What if the people laughed and put her out of the house?
  • being stoned – What did the Pharisees want to do to the woman taken in adultery?!

Though these fears must have been real, she loved Jesus so much that she was willing to put herself at risk to meet him at Simon’s house and pour out lavish love on Him.

Stop and consider the blessing she would have missed had she listened to her fears!  Her story wouldn’t be in the Scriptures for us an example!  The pharisee would never have understood what it looks like for a person to be so thankful that their sins are forgiven.

Fear hinders us from enjoying all that God has for us, too!

What does fear do?

  • Fear robs you from enjoying the present moment
  • Fear robs your joy
  • Fear robs your testimony as a believer
  • Fear robs your words of praise and encouragement
  • Fear robs God’s place on the Throne of your heart

However:

Fear loses its power when we actively trust God more than what we fear.

To conquer over fear we must:

  1. Replace your fear with Truth from God’s Word.  Memorize Scripture that will put your thoughts on Him instead of what you’re afraid of!  Here are a few of my favorite:
II Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Psalm 138:8a The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me:
I John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
  2. Think about God’s attributes instead of what is frightening you.
    1. God loves me.
    2. God is ruling over this situation.
    3. God is powerful.
    4. God is present with me.
    5. God can only do what is best for me.
  3. Pray, really pray and give the fear to God.  Talk to Him about it.  He already knows, of course, but give it to Him and then get up off your knees and experience the peace only He can give.
  4. Serve someone and get your mind off yourself.
  5. Sing and praise instead of fear and doubt!

Are you letting some fear hinder you from enjoying the blessing of all God has for you?  Trust His Word and His presence instead, and then, just as the woman here in Luke 7, you will enjoy the blessing of His presence!

What fears need to be replaced in your life today?

On Thursday we’ll continue this story from Luke 7 and we’ll learn about how to respond to being forgiven so much!

Don’t Regret Today

I wrote this post four years ago, but its message is relevant today. Tell me if you agree.

RefreshHer's avatarRefreshHer

“We were going  to do this”, and “We planned to do that, but it just never happened!”

Have you found yourself saying that about things you had thought you might do this December?  I opened my Bible to Proverbs 27 and the first verse I read this morning was,

Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

I found myself nodding my head vehemently and thinking, “Boy, that’s the truth!”

Just yesterday, I got up feeling well and thought I’d tackled a bunch of projects.  Things were going well until about 10am when my bones started hurting.  My fingers ached, my ribs hurt, then a headache began about the time the cough started.  Oh no, the dreaded flu!  I was down all day and night.  Gone were the things I’d hoped to do.  At this point I didn’t even care that…

Who Will Choose Your Place to Pray?

wp-1480508898129.jpg

A prayer closet – what picture comes to your mind of your own space?  A cozy corner in your bedroom, a spot in front of the sofa while the family sleeps, or the floor beside your bed?  It doesn’t matter what it looks like – or if it’s a true “closet.”  The important thing is that you have a space where you regularly talk to God in prayer.

What does it mean to pray?  Here’s my definition –

Prayer is Humbling myself before God, recognizing that I am utterly dependent upon Him, and giving to Him the care of my life, and everything that touches it.

As I read Jonah 2:1 yesterday, the Lord reminded me that if you and I as believers (Jonah was one, too) neglect to recognize the Lord each day and run to Him for cleansing, forgiveness, guidance and power, He has a loving way of making us realize that we’re not so good at running our own lives.  The verse says,

Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly.

Jonah was running in disobedience to God’s command.

Jonah was the reason the storm came on the sea.

Jonah was the only one on that rocking boat that wasn’t praying!

The other men were giving feeble attempts to pray to their gods, to no avail.  They woke Jonah up, and he confessed to them that His God is the Lord of the universe (a powerful storm will remind you of your omnipotent God!).  The other men forsook praying to their idols, and began praying to Jonah’s God, asking for deliverance!  Meanwhile, they cast Jonah out of the boat at his request.

THEN Jonah prayed unto God out of the fish’s belly.  He has a new Prayer Closet!  It wasn’t:

  • in  Ninevah’s where he was supposed to be preaching.
  • on the road walking, making his way to Ninevah, while the sun shone down on his back.
  • with other believers, in unity and oneness that comes in corporate prayer.

His new prayer closet was in the fish’s belly.  No light.  No warmth.  No comforts.  Just utter, complete, desperate dependence on his God!  This place of prayer was really Jonah’s choice. He had lost the realization that he could do anything if he depended on God.  He had failed to run to the Quiet place to seek his God’s face for courage and wisdom to obey.

Jonah’s new place to pray was in the closet of humility.

The wonderful thing is that God heard his prayer from that desperate place!  Verse two tells us that the Lord heard his voice!  God can humble us to make us realize we need Him so very much, but then He lovingly listens when we pour out our burdens to Him!

The choice is ours, just as it was Jonah’s.  Will we make time for humble prayer in a place of our choosing, or will we ignore the need to depend on God, and end up in a humble place of God’s choosing?  He loves us too much to let us go on in our proud way.

Let’s humble ourselves before Him and receive the blessing and joy a fervant prayer life brings!

What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

midway

While visiting my parents in Kentucky over Thanksgiving, we took a drive to some old home sites and places I grew up.  One drive took us to a small town where I had originally thought I’d go to college.  My husband pulled the car into the entrance gate and my mind played back the scene as I looked through the car windows and recalled the last time I was there…

My plans were made, and in my heart, my future was set.  As a senior in high school, I thought I was sure what God wanted for me.  I would attend a local college, literally up the road.

I would live at home.

I would become a nurse and serve the Lord with that ministry.

It was settled.

Then one Friday night I drove through the entrance of the college pictured above for a weekend visit of the campus. This was a time for perspective students to visit and get an idea of what college life was like on this campus.  It was labeled as a Christian school.  I was excited about that, because Christ is my Savior, and I desired to live my life and be in places that honored Him.  I had visited a large Christian university in another state earlier that year, just for a fun weekend, and was so impressed with the spiritual temperature of the campus and in the lives of the students.

However, what I had anticipated seeing and hearing on this weekend was not at all what I saw or heard.  Though this was supposed to be a Christian school, that was definitely not the testimony I witnessed.  I was heartbroken.  At the end of my visit, I got in my car, pulled away from the school, and cried the 15 minute ride home.

I couldn’t have been more sure that God was saying a firm, “No” to all my plans.

At the time I remember how devastated I was.  I wasn’t sure what I would do now.  I had literally had the rug pulled out from under my feet.

I cried and I prayed.

I also talked with my parents, whom I knew were much wiser, and would give me godly counsel.  I suggested the Christian college that I had visited earlier in the year, but they had valid concerns and they lovingly said, “No.”

When you’re an 18 girl who is a child of God, and you live at home, have no job, or no idea about where to get an education, you quickly enroll in the school of prayer.  As I submitted to my parents counsel, and prayed for God’s direction, He provided me with a job at the Coca Cola Bottling Company, working in the accounting department.  That was totally of the Lord, seeing I had NO experience in this field, and didn’t even do super well in my math classes!

I went to work there, and enjoyed my life as a young single adult, all the while praying that if God would allow, He would open the door for me to attend the Christian college eight hours from my home.  In the middle of the year, my mom asked if I was still desiring to attend school there.  I answered that I was.  She gave me their blessing!  I finished out the summer working at Coca Cola and prepared to leave in the fall.

That move to the large Christian university in September changed the direction of my life forever and in wonderful ways.

God’s timing was perfect.

His provision was complete.

His grace was sufficient.

His plan was perfect because He is God.

I learned some really important lessons during those months of waiting and wondering that have served me well as an adult.  In my mind’s eye, when I visit that driveway of the other school, I don’t just remember God shutting that door, I remember the lessons I learned about trusting Him, the sweetness of prayer, and of Him opening the next door – in His time and in His perfect way.

What are you waiting for today?  God’s will to be revealed?  A test result?  A mate?  A provision?  An answer?  Don’t give up and do your own thing.  You can trust God with every detail that He will arrange in His sovereign ways.  Wait and trust.  You’ll be glad you did.

So thankful,

If It Hadn’t Been For the Lord…

I am a perpetual list maker.  I always have been.  It makes my days run smoother.  It makes me see that I’ve accomplished something.

wp-1469043764579.jpg

But sometimes that habit becomes a stumbling block because it can cause me to run on “auto-pilot.”

Breaking that down, it simply means that I run on “Denise’s ability”  rather than God’s.

Here’s how Denise’s list goes:

  • Blog post  – I get a “great idea” in my head and type it up without praying about it.
  • Make bread – I made our bread and freeze the other loaf without asking God with whom I could share the extra bread.
  • Grocery shopping – I buzz through the store, with little thought about having a Gospel conversation with a shopper who speaks to me.
  • Dry Cleaners – The worker looked worn and worried, but I didn’t ask how her day was going and how I could pray for her.

Everything got checked off, but it was done in my strength and with my limited abilities.  Nothing extraordinary happened as result.  Denise’s abilities revealed.

This week I read Psalm 124:1 -3

 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

Then they had swallowed us up quick…

Israel had victory and they could say, If it hadn’t been for the Lord we would have been swallowed up by our enemy!  God interrupted their day!

That verse made me stop and ask myself – “What happened in my day yesterday that I would say, If hadn’t been for the Lord who was on my side things would have turned out much differently!”?  Did I look to the Lord to break in and interrupt my plans? Or did I do everything in my own strength instead?

Oh, that every day I would allow God to interrupt my plans.  It might look like this instead:

  • Blog post“If it hadn’t been for the Lord, I wouldn’t have thought to post that!”
  • Bake Bread“If it hadn’t been for the Lord, I would have missed meeting the new family up the street, but He reminded me I needed to take them a loaf of bread and introduce myself!”
  • Grocery Shopping“If it hadn’t been for the Lord nudging me to invite the sweet lady at the store to my church, she may never have visited!”
  • Dry Cleaners“If it hadn’t been for the Lord nudging me to pray with the worker at the dry cleaners, I never would have known that her husband was diagnosed with cancer recently.”

Do you see what a difference depending on and surrendering to the Lord makes in our day? His abilities are revealed! I have missed out on His blessings so many times, simply because I was not relying on His Spirit and power to work through me to do what only He can do.  How sad.How empty.

But today is a new day to surrender.

This situation is another opportunity to give my plans to Him!

Today’s list is another chance to see Him step in and do what only He can do!

What happened in your day yesterday that would make you say – “If it hadn’t been for the Lord THAT never would have happened!”?  How much of your day yesterday was empowered by the Spirit of God and how much was done in your own strength?  God wants to use us as His instruments, if we’ll only surrender our wills (and our lists!) to Him.

Thankful for His grace,
