10 Ways to Support Your Adult Child Without Smothering

The year was 1978, and all in one weekend, my twin sister got married, and I moved out of my home to go teach school in a state about 7.5 hours away.  Our other sister was already married, so this left my parents with a double empty nest all in one swift swoop!  My mom told me later that for a day or two she was sad, but then she said,

“After a few days, I realized, ‘Hey, this is pretty nice!’”

She never looked back.  Every time I’d call home, my parents were headed here, going there, enjoying this new phase of their lives.  It gave me security to see them happy, even now that their lives as parents was now very different from the previous 19 years!  What a great example and blessing they were to me!  I felt “free” to do whatever God called me to do!

Decorate with Confidence: Insights from Myquillyn’s New Book

I have shared many times about my favorite decorator, Myquillyn Smith at The Nester. This year she published a new book, House Rules. It’s a huge book filled with pictures from her home. What I love about her is that she doesn’t tell you to “go buy this,” or “You need this.” She tells you how to create a home you’ll love with what you have now.

Recently when I was at my library I had a question in my head about whether or not our library might have her new book. I was THRILLED to find it on the New books bookshelf!

There are 100 Rules she’s written about decorating. Each one is so inspiring – not restricting! I thought I’d show how I’ve implemented some of those rules in my home. Here’s one – Everything that sits out is decoration. That means your box of tissues, the pill bottle or your stash of pens. Therefore, if you want it to be a pretty decor, make it so! Here’s how I fixed my tissue box that was sitting on the side table in the living room.

Brighten Your Spring with Lemon Muffins

What says, spring more than lemon-flavor? I love its tanginess, its brightness and even its color. I have many delicious lemon recipes that I’ve used over the years, including Lemon Loaf, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Pudding Cake and Coconut Cake with Lemon Curd. But since you can’t have too many lemon recipes, I recently made a Lemon Muffin that paired well with the Rotisserie Chicken Dinner I served. My husband loved them! They were equally as good served alongside our breakfast the next morning!

Creating a Loving Atmosphere at Home

This is the conclusion of our discussion about managing our homes in a series I’ve called, Maytag, messes and meals.  You can listen to this post here on Refresh Her podcast.

In the previous posts we’ve dealt with the laundry, the housekeeping and the meals.  Let’s wrap up with some thoughts that will encourage you in your day to day management.

  1. Prepare your heart for the day. Talk to the Lord about your day and your work.  Give it to Him.

Ps. 90:17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.

So often, the things I worried about and wondered how I’d get done never happened! Giving it to the Lord keeps you from worrying before it takes place, then allows you to see a gracious God moving things out of the way and/or giving you strength to get it done.
But it starts with preparing your heart.

Delicious Veggie Stromboli Recipe for Busy Nights

Last week I shared a few new recipes I was anxious to try. I have an update about one that was super easy and also delicious! I made the Veggie Stromboli from Skinny Taste and we really enjoyed it. A stromboli is kind of like a rolled up pizza. Sometimes homemade stromboli’s and pizzas are labor intensive, but a packaged pizza crust made this come together quickly.

I found a package of pizza dough at Aldi – not in a can, but a plastic bag. It was on sale last week for .99! I’m so glad I found this for nights when I don’t want to make my own crust. This is great for a busy night! You won’t be skimping on flavor, just time!
