What’s Cookin’ in the Country?

image

This is a delicious bread that you don’t knead, but it is a recipe that you need!

Seriously, this is the easiest homemade bread. Ever. It’s from King Arthur Flour, and I’m SO GLAD I finally got around to making this. If you’ve been afraid to try homemade bread, this is the recipe you should start with!

You can find the recipe here.

I’m having some technical difficulties posting, so I’m going to make this short today. Thanks for stopping by my country kitchen. I really hope you’ll get in your kitchen and stir up this bread recipe! You’ll be really glad you did!

Freshen Up Friday

Do you know what this is a picture of?

Encouragement!

What is encouragement?  [en-kur-ij-muh nt] It is to stimulate by assistance or approval.

Last weekend a group of friends gathered to encourage me!  It was a total jaw dropping shock surprise gathering.  The reason for our time together was strictly to encourage me in a ministry the Lord has allowed me to do for Him.  I can’t tell you how many tears I shed on that afternoon as those dear ladies shared and encouraged my heart, loved me, and gave touching gifts of appreciation.

Since that time with my friends, I have truly been stimulated and felt assisted from the backing they gave me!  It refreshed my vigor in my ministry and has given me a new vision for the days ahead.

What ministry does someone do for which you are really thankful?  Why not ask the Lord to give you a creative idea about how you could refresh them with your encouragement?  At our time together, we shared a delicious lunch, they shared their appreciation with me  and gave me precious gifts. Then we ended with a time of prayer.

Even if you did something on a much smaller scale, the receiver will be so thankful!  Consider one of these ideas:

  • Wrap a candy bar and giving it accompanied with a note.
  • Send a hand-written card with your appreciation.
  • Invite the person over for a meal or dessert and share your appreciation verbally.
  • Take them out for ice cream or coffee and tell them what a blessing they’ve been to you.
  • If they teach a class you attend, preach at your church, lead your choir or do anything else that involves a whole group of other people, let everyone go in and add a line or two on a card.  Give it to them at your weekly gathering.

And let us consider how to stir up

one another to love and good works…

Hebrews 10:24

If the person you refresh with your encouragement is half as blessed as I have been from what I received recently, it will be the blessing of a lifetime!

Refresh someone with your encouragement!

Encourage your pastor with your presence in church on Sunday!

Stay refreshed,

Door Knocking? Are You Serious?!

Yesterday I had the blessing of joining a group from West Coast Baptist College and four others from my church  to go
“Knocking On Doors.”  The team from West Coast was a singing group that had come to our church Tuesday night to minister in song and the Word of God.  Before they left Johnson City, they desired to go out and canvas the area.  That was a tremendous blessing to us! This isn’t their church, but they desired to invite people to visit Boones Creek Bible Church.  We were out for about an hour and a half, and I can tell you that we had the best time!

Knocking on doors is a pretty old-fashioned term, and to some it’s a really old-fashioned idea.  You may be asking, “What do you do when you “knock on doors?”  Let me walk you through a visit:

  1. With tract in hand, we walked up to a door, a smile on our face.  We tried to watch for things like swing sets or toys in the yard that would tip us off that this family had children.  We looked to see if anyone was in the yard.  If we didn’t see anyone outside, we would knock on the door or ring the bell and wait for an answer.
  2. When someone opened the door we would say something like, “Hello!  We’re from Boones Creek Bible Church and we’re just walking through your neighborhood inviting folks to visit our church!  Do you go to church anywhere?”  If they said, “Yes.”  We’d say, well we’re not wanting to pull you away from your church, but if you ever have the opportunity to visit, we have services on Sunday and Wednesday, and the times are on this brochure.  We’d love to have you!”
  3. If the person didn’t have a church, we’d show them the times and address of the church, clearly marked on the tract.
  4. If they had children, we also invited gave them one of our VBS invitations and told them about when and where it was happening.
  5. While talking to them, we were always looking for the opportunity to bring in the Gospel and to share Christ as the Only Way.  That doesn’t always come, but it’s wonderful when it does.
  6. We thanked them for their time, said goodbye and were on our way!

How easy was that?!

Perhaps you’re asking: Why do we go?  What is the need?  Is it just some old-fashioned idea that needs to be forgotten?

  • We go because that’s what Jesus commanded – not suggested – before He ascended back to heaven.
  • We go because lost people aren’t knocking on the church doors to get in – they must be invited!
  • We go because we are missionaries as Paul and Barnabas were.  This is our Jerusalem.
  • We go because we are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.
  • We go, not because we’re not afraid of rejection!  We know it will come!  But we go out of obedience, and we leave the results to the Lord!

Paul and Barnabas were terribly mistreated.  Paul was stoned and left for dead!  The closest I’ve ever come to that is tripping over a stone in a driveway!  No, I have it so easy!  I even got into my air conditioned car and went and got a Pal’s Tea when I was finished!  That is NOT suffering!  =) Oh, and at the stop at Pal’s, the worker at the window asked if I was having a great day.

“Oh, yes!  We’ve been out going door to door, inviting folks to our church this morning!  Do you go to church anywhere?”

“I’m Methodist.”

“Oh, I see.” I answered.  “Well, the most important thing is Christ.  I trust you know Him as your Savior.  Here’s a little pamphlet that will tell you how you can know Him.  Can I give this to you to read later when you have a break?”  I then handed him a tract.  He took it and thanked me.  I got my tea and smiled all the way to my destination.

I was so blessed by our time out.  Blessing comes after we obey – not before.

Blessed are they that keep my ways.

Proverbs 8:32

We often don’t get goose bumps and excitement before we go –  it’s more like shivers and shakes!  But after we’ve obeyed Christ’s command, the joy is overflowing!

I haven’t mastered this, by any means, and still have much to learn, but I do know that God is so good to not only let us serve Him at someone’s door, but then He rewards us for doing it!  What a God we serve!

Have you ever gone Door Knocking?  What is keeping you from joining your church to reach your community for Christ?  If someone visited your church as a result of your visit at their house, wouldn’t that make it all worthwhile?  It’s our choice to obey…or not.

A Peek From My Porch

image

Last Friday I shared with you my coffee table makeover for my back porch. Today I have to show you my 66% off clearance find to coordinate with my table! These pillows, from Hobby Lobby, which had been $40 each, were marked to just under $14 each! If you’ve been in the market for pillows lately you know that is an incredible bargain!

I have been on the lookout for accessories for my Porch, so I was ecstatic when I spotted these in the sale aisle. They are perfect for either my patio or my front porch rockers.

Do you ever get overwhelmed when you happen upon a great sale because you can’t remember what you need? That used to happen to me, then I started making a list on my phone. Whether it’s a need for pillows for furniture, a necklace for a top, or a gift for an upcoming birthday, I add it to a list on my phone, then when I’m out and I find a great sale, I know exactly what to look for. Though there were two VERY full aisles of sale merchandise, I knew what to pass by and what to gravitate to!

Still on my list for my patio is an outdoor rug. If you see a great deal, give me a holler!

Thanks for stopping by by

Rest During Motherhood

image

Yesterday after enjoying dinner at a quaint restaurant we stepped out into the garden area in the back and came upon the scene in the picture above.  Two little baby ducklings were waddling about, over the rocks, down the embankment and into the water.  They were continually on the move and right behind them was their momma, honking out her warning to us, the intruders.  She never let them out of her sight and was right on their heels as they investigated their surroundings.  It was so sweet to watch.  That Mommy duck was very busy!  She was constantly moving – trying to keep up with her little ones.  I wondered if she ever wanted to just sit on the edge of the pond and take a break!

My heart went out to Momma duck, and  my mind also went to the nature and roll of all mommies.  We protect, we oversee, we guide, we stand guard, just like that momma duck was doing.  God puts it in our hearts to want to provide that safety for our little ducklings, and if anyone or any situation could harm them, we’re ready to honk out a good warning.  .But let’s face it, weariness steps in.

We  keenly teach the safety of helmets for bike riding, the “left, right, left” method for learning to cross the street, holding scissors with the point in their hands, and refraining from talking to strangers.  We discipline, teach, and correct, as we follow our children all over their little pond.  It’s exhausting work being a mommy.

All moms get to the exhausted point from time to time, and the desire to sit at the water’s edge and just let those children “swim on their own” for a while is a huge temptation.  A mom may put the kids in front of the television for a while so she can rest.  She may send them to their room, or lock herself in a room where they can’t reach her for a while.  There’s certainly nothing wrong with a child learning to play on their own, or watch a limited amount of quality television, but there may be better ways to get a break from swimming after your ducklings.  May I suggest:

  • Get together with a few moms at a local park or a Chick-Fil-A play area and let them play with other children while all the mommy ducks visit and supervise.  Those moms that meet you there will be as needy of a time away and will be thankful you were willing to send out a Facebook request or email to ask them to join you!
  • Attend a story time at your local library.  Your children will be engaged in hearing a story and perhaps having an activity and you can sit back and enjoy a moment of secondary supervision!
  • Exchange baby sitting with a friend.  You keep her children one day and she keeps yours another day.  Go out alone.  Enjoy some coffee and a book, shopping for groceries, or getting your hair cut and styled.
  • Utlitze your church’s programs.  If you love your church enough to be there to grow as a believer, then you should be able to trust the workers with your children.  Send them to Sunday school, children’s church and VBS.  This is the BEST time for you to be able to worship and grow in services.
  • Pray about your husband giving you an hour or two away.  Approach him at the right time and ask when it would be a good time for him to sit with the kids while you get out.

Being a mommy is hard work that is non-stop, but unlike the mommy duck I watched, you can provide opportunities for refreshment and rest so you’ll be able to continue swimming with the ducklings!

Refresh yourself in the thick of motherhood!
