Word to the Wise Wednesday

There’s nothing wiser than the Word of God. Today, I’m going to reflect on some of the wisdom that’s been shared with us during this week of revival.

We deal in logic, reasoning, and emotions when faced with temptation. Instead, we must use the Word of God. We were encouraged to memorize the following verses in this order to fight against the devil and temptation:

“Christians stagger in their walk and talk because of their thoughts.”

“Thoughts precedes action.”

“Obedience is key to a life of a Christian.”

“The holy life doesn’t live in the closet, but it cannot survive without it.”

“The Lord is more willing to answer prayer than we are to pray.”

What to do in a crisis:

  1. Pray
  2. Recognize the power of God – “The task ahead of us is never greater than the power of God behind us.”
  3. Recall past victories
  4. Keep your eyes on the Lord

“God will never allow a crisis to crush you.”

Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

God Will Make a Way

Often the way of a child of God is like an overgrown garden. It’s full of weeds. The once neat pathway is thick with wayward plants, branches and thorns. We see the mess and ask, “Which way am I to go?” Or, “How will my loved one know God’s direction?” It seems difficult to proceed because we do not know the way. Making the right decision or doing the right thing lies in the promises of God…

Proverbs 2:8 He preserveth the way of his saints.

God is still sure of the path. He is not confused. The excessive jungle of choices does not muddle His thinking, and He will make the way for our feet clear and plain. He will preserve the way of His saints. I Samuel 2:9 says “He will keep the feet of his saints…” If my feet, then He will also protect my head, my heart – all that belongs to Him! He will make His way known to me that I might walk the right way and follow His leading.

God will make a way

He works in ways we cannot see;
He will make a way for me.

Hold me closely to His side.

What’s Cookin’ in the Parsonage?

Our Back To School Revival began yesterday with Brother Jerry Sivnksty preaching. It was a wonderful beginning to the week and we’re excited about hearing the preaching of the Word and being changed by it!

It was my privilege to meet the Sivnksty’s for the first time, then have them in my home for our Sunday dinner. They are a precious couple and we shared a sweet time around the table. I love entertaining because it allows people to share a bit of our heart. When they enter our doors they learn more of who we are and I pray they can feel at home. When Brother Jerry asked if he could take his shoes off shortly after entering, it made me glad that he could feel at home with us. We’re no different than anyone else and we want our guests to feel comfortable and at ease.

So, take your shoes off, get comfy on the sofa, and join me for a review of the meal!

My menu for the day was:
Turkey Breast
Mashed potatoes
Fresh Corn
Caramel Ice Cream Dessert & Lemon Blueberry Angel Food Cake




Rather than serving the fresh corn on the cob, I decided to cut it off. I saw this clever trick on the Food network. Place the cooked and cooled corn on the middle of a bundt pan to make cutting it easier. The corn stays put and the cut kernels fall into the pan instead of all over the floor!

I knew the Sivnksty’s are health conscious, so I made two desserts – a light one and a not-so-light one so they could have a choice. This was my first attempt at making angel food. It was very good, and you can eat a piece and not feel guilty with only .5 grams of fat!


I failed to take a picture of the whole caramel ice cream dessert, but here’s a picture of a slice. My husband calls it “a killer.” When I asked if that was good or bad, he assured me it was good! It’s like a giant ice cream sandwich made in a springform pan. The cookie part is oatmeal and goes so well with the homemade caramel sauce that you serve with it!

Caramel Ice Cream Dessert
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
2/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, softened
(I like any vanilla based ice cream with this – pralines and cream is super good)
  • Combine first 4 ingredients, and stir in melted butter; press mixture firmly into a lightly greased 15 x 10 x 1 inch jellyroll pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes or until lightly browned; remove cookie to wire rack. Cool and crumble.
  • Combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, and evaporated milk in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly; boil 3 minutes. Cool caramel sauce.
  • Sprinkle half of crumbs into bottom of a lightly greased 10-inch springform pan. Drizzle with half of caramel sauce. Spread ice cream over sauce. sprinkle with remaining crumbs.
  • Cover and freeze until firm.
  • Pour remaining warmed sauce over each slice at serving time.
Yield: 12 servings

Help Others To Listen

I mentioned earlier this week that I usually always sit in the front of the church during services – greatly because of my lack of being able to stay focused. When there are lots of people in front of me my mind often wanders.

Well, Wednesday night in Prayer meeting I got “caught” toward the back of the church when the service began. I’d been chatting and catching up with folks when the song service began, so I promptly found myself a place near where I’d been standing. A friend and a follower of my blog turned and said something like, “Oh, you’re in the back!” She probably remembered my post and wondered if I’d be drawing pictures or be taking mental attendance instead of paying attention to the message! However, I did stay focused, and let me tell you how my friend made it even easier for me to do so.

While my husband was teaching, she was focused. He would make a statement or ask a rhetorical question and her head would nod in agreement. At one point a child up front went out, but rather than letting her eyes follow the child’s movement, she remained intent on the preaching – as though no one was moving about.

What a lesson she was to me. As I sit up in front of others, my participation, focus, and discipline will help those behind me to be less distracted. I can encourage them to listen intently by my doing the same. On the other hand, if I wiggle around, get up and leave and come back again, fiddle with my purse and other belongings, or talk to those near me, I’ll only serve as a huge barrier to those around me who came to hear from the Lord.

As you go to church this Sunday, be mindful of those behind you, and help – don’t hinder them from being able to stay attentive to the Word of God as it’s being preached.

Summer Tomatoes

I know it’s not Monday, my day to share recipes, but I was wondering if you have an overflow of tomatoes at your house? What do you do with them? We have been blessed to have a supply of tomatoes given to us by gardeners in our church. Oh, how we love them! I love them in salads, or on a piece of bread with a little mayo (my sister thinks this is strange! Does anyone else love tomato sandwiches?). We also love Tomato Pie .

This week I tried another recipe using fresh tomatoes and basil and we really loved it. it’s called Tomato, Basil and Parmesan Flatbread from Cooking Light. We had tried a chicken flatbread at Olive Garden and loved it, so I knew I had to try to this recipe.

First you make up the flatbread recipe, then you roll the dough into four pieces and layer it with yellow and red tomatoes. It goes into the oven for 13 minutes.

Meanwhile you mix up the basil, garlic and Parmesan mixture to put over the tomatoes…

Pop it back into the oven ’til the Parmesan cheese melts.

This makes a great appetizer. You could add chopped chicken to it to make it a little more hearty. If you have tomatoes lying around that you don’t know what to do with, try this!
