I love my front porch and keeping it inviting is important to me. I want to feel that it’s always opening its arms and welcoming all who pass to sit down, enjoy the shade and have time to rest. That takes careful attention to the chairs, rugs and flowers out there. The pillows on the chairs also need to be refreshed, especially after a summer of sunshine beating down, fading their colors. I don’t want to buy a new pillow for each season, but I do want the pillows to coordinate with the time of year. Here’s how I accomplish that without spending a fortune ~

Two friends bump into each other at the grocery store and we hear them chat –
Friend One speaks – “How are you doing? I’ve been praying for you. The last time we met you were going through a hard time. Are things better?”
Friend Two answers – “Oh, that was such a trial, let me tell you…(and she does). Oh, and that reminds me to tell you about my Jason. Did you hear he made the first string in basketball? He scored more than anyone on the team. I don’t know what they’d do without him! One of his games was unforgettable. I have to tell you about it (and she does). Of course he gets his agility from his dad – he played in college you know. That’s how we met – he played, and I cheered! We had some fun times, let me tell you (and she does). Goodness sakes, we’ve been yakking a half an hour! I’ve got to get my groceries and get home. It was great getting caught up on you! Take care!”

Happy October! Fall is a season of comfort foods and delicious coffee cakes enjoyed with mugs of steaming coffee. Today I’m sharing a new recipe recently introduced to me that will perfectly fit those autumnal menus.
Last week our small group had a fellowship dinner. We decided the theme would be Breakfast for supper. A couple of our dear friends from out of town were going to be here to join us and she wanted to make something to contribute to the meal. Her recipe was a hit with everyone! Cherry Coffee Cake was her recipe, and it tastes like a cross between a pastry and a cake. You could substitute another fruit topping, but I’m telling you that the cherry was so delicious! She was sweet enough to share her recipe with me! Thanks, Ellen!

Last weekend my girls and I had the blessing of spending two nights together celebrating mine and Whitney’s birthdays. It had been planned for the actual day of my 65th, but I was recovering from the flu. But the sweet blessing of the Lord was that our rescheduled trip turned out even better than we had originally planned!

I remember when my girls were little; we would use their play phones as I taught them how to make a call if there was an emergency. We went over how they were to dial 9-1-1, then would need to give their name and address. Thank the Lord we never had to use that, but what a comfort to know that help was there, should we need it.

In a physical emergency situation, we’ve been programmed to call “9-1-1.” In a spiritual emergency we need to call up Psalm 9-1-1 – that is, Psalm 91:1. It reads, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Why is this a good passage in an emergency?
