Packing for the Journey of Marriage, Part 2

This is the second in a three part series on marriage. Part one is here. You can listen to this post on Refresh Her podcast.

Marriage is a journey that is intended by God to last a lifetime. There are responsibilities that we are to “pack away” to make our relationships God-honoring, fulfilling to our husband, and to create a home life that is a blessing to one another. Let’s pick up with our list and check to see if our luggage is packed sufficiently.

This list isn’t filled with the essentials, like Bible study and prayer. I’m assuming that, like your outfits you would pack for a trip, these are already “on the list.” They’re non-negotiables. Be in God’s Word. Stay in fellowship with the Lord through a regular, desperate prayer time.

Let’s turn around and add some things we often forget, like …

Grandparents

Grandmother with a Purpose

Being a grandmother, Gigi, Nana, Gran…or whatever you’re called is a special blessing, but it’s also a special calling. Listen to what Paul says about Timothy’s grandmother…

2 Timothy 1:4,5 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Lois had a profound impact in Timothy’s life!

Louisa May Alcott said, Every house needs a grandmother in it.

How special a grandmother makes a child’s life! She can add so much fun and adventure, but God’s Word elevates a grandmother to an even higher position. When she deposits the Word of God in the lives of her grandchildren, she can have a profound influence in their lives.

How can we do that? Here are two important areas in which we make an impact…

Wisely Dealing with Conflict

You can listen to this post on Refresh Her podcast.

“I Just love conflict!

said no one.

Ever.

We all avoid it. We’d rather put up with someone, overlook what might be rightfully ours, or look the other way at a grievance, just to avoid the stickiness a confrontation would bring. While it is wise at times to turn the other cheek, to overlook a transgression for the sake of love, there are times/situations that demand a confrontation.

The year was 1978, and all in one weekend, my twin sister got married, and I moved out of my home to go teach school in a state about 7.5 hours away.  Our other sister was already married, so this left my parents with a double empty nest all in one swift swoop!  My mom told me later that for a day or two she was sad, but then she said,

“After a few days, I realized, ‘Hey, this is pretty nice!’”

She never looked back.  Every time I’d call home, my parents were headed here, going there, enjoying this new phase of their lives.  It gave me security to see them happy, even now that their lives as parents was now very different from the previous 19 years!  What a great example and blessing they were to me!  I felt “free” to do whatever God called me to do!

What Does a “Reverent” Woman Look Like?

Adorned Study #5 – You can listen to this post here on Refresh Her podcast.

If you know a woman who
~is godly in her conduct,
~wears clothes that are tasteful and appropriate,
~uses speech that is gracious,
~and shows that she loves the Lord by the way she speaks and acts,
then you know a woman who is reverent in her behavior.

If you go out shopping, walk the streets in a city, or go to a public event, you are likely not going to see these kind of actions present in excess, or even being applauded. But that’s to be expected in the world, right? Why? Because sinners sin.
