Have you heard of people who win millions of dollars, then end up being paupers in a decade or less? It happens. They foolishly spend up their winnings, rather than using it wisely. In a much more severe loss than even material gain, you and I can waste away the treasure of a godly home, losing the valuable gift that God desires for every family. There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man spendeth it up. Proverbs 21:20
How do we spend up the treasure of a godly home?
- We go in our own strength.
Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Working in your own strength is the most exhausting work you can do! Are you always sighing and rushed? Could it perhaps be because you are doing everything without consulting God first? Seek ye first the Kingdom of God…Matt 6:33 - We think we can miss days in God’s Word and be fine.
Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive…
We blow up when trials come because we’re not filled with Truth. Prov 24:10 If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. - We spend more time out of the home than in it so that meals are on the run, laundry is piled up and the house is a chaotic mess.
Prov 31:11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. Prov 14:1 - We look frequently for “our time” and resent being a housewife.
Phil 2:4-8 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. - We only submit when we agree 100% with our husband’s decisions.
And the wife see that she reverence her husband. Eph 5:31
If you don’t agree, pray about it and let the Lord bring truth to your husband’s heart! - We let the children do their own thing and overlook their need for correction and time with us.
Prov 19:18 Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.
Proverbs 22:6 is for the parents who are actively involved in child training right now. Train them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord!
The “treasure” that is realized when we follow God’s directives for our homes is a sweet, loving atmosphere that makes it a joy for family and friends to come home to. Is it always perfect? Hardly. Is it most often a respite from the world? Oh yes.
Are you digging for the treasure at home, or are you spending it up today? You can make the necessary changes even now, with the Lord’s help. A home where God’s love is felt and demonstrated is truly “a treasure to be desired.”
Be honest as to how you are responding to your home. If the Spirit of God points to areas where you are wasting the treasures He desires, confess it and ask for His help. The home is His creation. He will help you build yours!
Refresh the atmosphere of your home.
