No birthday is complete without a yummy dessert, right? At least in my book that’s true! For her recent birthday, my daughter suggested I make either chocolate or strawberry cake. I decided to combine those two flavors into one cake!
I went looking for a strawberry icing and came across this one that was amazing! All Sally’s recipes are delicious!

The Buttercream is pretty standard, but to flavor it with strawberries, the recipe calls for freeze-dried berries.

The dried strawberries are ground up in the food processor and then added to the plain buttercream.

I’ve made a recipe years ago with fresh strawberries and they really mess with the texture of the icing, but freeze-dried strawberries don’t change the texture, and they make the flavor pop!!
I baked up the chocolate cake on Sally’s page, but put them in large muffin tins. After baking, I chilled them, then sliced them in half and filled them with the buttercream. After placing the top on the cake, I poured the ganache over top. To embellish the cake a little I added a piping of the buttercream on the top, then added a fresh strawberry just before serving.
It was nice that we each had our own little cake to enjoy as we desired. I boxed them up in square boxes I found at Hobby Lobby so they would travel and store well. You can see the boxes in the background in the pic below.
If you like strawberries, this is the buttercream recipe for you!!! It would also be good on a white or yellow cake! I don’t think you could go wrong – no matter what you added it to!
Here’s another favorite Strawberry Cake of mine from Southern Living – Strawberry Lemonade Cake. Strawberry Pizza is a delicious fruit pizza that’s always a winner!
Enjoy!🍓
