Family Friday – Mother’s Day Dilemnas

That holiday is approaching.  You know, the one where our family bows at our feet, singing our praises for the sacrifices of

  • laundry at midnight
  • science projects aided
  • homemade cookies baked for classroom parties
  • wounds kissed and cleaned
  • A patient, listening ear always ready to fix a relationship problem.

Okay, maybe not.  In reality, likely not.  Not if you still have children in your care.  Not if you’re a single mom.  Not if your husband is caught up in the pressures and stuff of life.  But I’m not here today to shake my finger at them because it’s so easy to forget.

I admit forgetting, too.  As a little girl, I was pretty much only focused on what my mom could and would do for me. Because she was so consistant, I came to expect a hearty meal every day at 5:00, clean clothes in my dresser, hugs when I was mistreated, and words of wisdom to guide my life.  It wasn’t until I became a young adult that I realized how much was sacrificed in order for me to possess that kind of home environment.  It was then that I really learned to say thank you to my loving mom.  I began to comprehend how truly blessed I was.  Every Mother’s Day since then, it’s been my goal to express to her how grateful I am today for all she was and still is.

So let me stop to say, Mom (Millie Ray), thank you for all you did to make home so special.  Thank you for the meals you prepared that were both delicious and graciously served.  Thank you for taking the effort to decorate our home and keep it clean, and also teach me how to do those household tasks.  Thank you for sacrificing your own career so you could be home for us.  Thank you for loving God and making sure I knew Him, too.  And thank you for loving my dad and showing me that marriage was for keeps.  I appreciated it as a child, but today I once again say thank you and I love you!

To all you readers who are moms, I say, enjoy Mother’s Day by not expecting anything from your family.  Put your thoughts on your mom, or some other woman that the Lord has put in your life to encourage you, love you and support you.  Be grateful for them.  Do something to show your gratitude.  Stop and thank the Lord for your children.  Keep your focus on gratitude, rather than on your expectations. I learned this the hard way!

This is one holiday that makes me hurt for some dear women.  To those of you who wish you were a mom and find pain on this day, I say I’m sorry, and even greater, God understands and sees your grief.  Remember that He is a good, good Father, and don’t doubt His love because He has withheld this from you.

To those who didn’t have a loving mom, I say, God saw, God knows, and that is the reason we needed a Savior.  He gave us His son so we could all understand the greatest kind of sacrificial love.

To those whose mom or child is in heaven, remember that we’ll be joining our loved ones sooner than we think, never to be separated again. I love to think about what my daughter, Ashley is enjoying in heaven at this very moment!

Let’s allow Mother’s Day to find us showing our families that our greatest desire is God’s, “Well Done,” and that the joy of His comfort is enough for every pain in our hearts.  There are many coming behind us that need to learn from us that holidays are man-made, but the joy of being a Christlike woman is God-made!  That’s a gift that only He can give us, and that is enough!

Find refreshment in Christ!

Taking a Week Off

0424171044a

Happy Monday, everyone!  Wow!  I had a wonderful weekend full of fellowship, old friends, new friends, family time, teaching from God’s Word, and lots of fun and laughter!  I can’t wait to share it all with you!

But…first a little rest. I’m going to take a week’s vacation from blogging, but don’t forget me!  I’ll be back next week with recipes, ideas, and pictures of what I’ve been up to!  If you’re not following my blog yet, you could hit “follow” and you’ll get an email when the next post is up.  My mind will keep coming here this week, but I’ll resist the urge to write and save it for seven days from now.

I pray you’re having a great day.  Stay refreshed, and I’ll see you next Monday!

Lovingly,

Two Testimonies, Two Responses

sunset a.jpg

Yesterday I sat in a public waiting area with a friend, and like friends do, we chatted while we were waiting.  Our conversation turned within the first 30 seconds to that which what matters most to each of us – our spiritual lives.  We talked about about how Jesus taught His disciples, which is our pattern too.  We spoke of the Lord’s work in our lives, and other things too, for about ten minutes until a gentleman seated in the chair near me spoke to us and said,

Excuse me for interrupting you, but I just wanted to say how refreshing it is to hear your conversation and hear you talk about things that are far better than the trash most people talk about!

Looking at the man, you would quickly note that he was a motorcycle fan.  He had the “that motorcycle look.”  He wore a T-shirt, sporting a bike.  His goatee was long, like the guys you see on their Harley’s.  (I’m not condemning him for that, just giving you the picture.)  I thanked him and then asked,

Who is Jesus to you?

He quickly and heartily told me that He was His Lord and Savior!  He went on to say that he had been saved out of a life of drugs and alcohol and was now spending his life reaching out to motorcyclists who need Christ!  What a blessing to talk with him and to share our common bond in the Lord!

As I considered later in the day what had happened in that waiting room, I thought about how my friend and I were totally unaware that we were being observed in that place.  We were just going about our conversation, talking about our sweet Savior, and all praise to Him, we were a testimony to that man, without even realizing it. How different that could have been if we had chosen (as I have on other occasions) to talk about our worries, fears, or other people!  There would have been no light on those days!

A couple hours later, I found myself at a store making a purchase.  The store clerk had much the same look about him as the man in the waiting room, and reminded me of my earlier conversation.  While I was waiting for the man to finish bagging my items, I felt the prodding of the Holy Spirit to give him the Gospel.  As he handed me my receipt, I noted that there was no one in line behind me waiting to be served.  God had given me an open door and the time to speak to him.  With heart pounding, I said,

I have seen God answer prayer and be at work in my life all day today.  How have you seen God at work in your life?

His terse response was, “What?!!”  I repeated my question, then he answered,

Well, I don’t know, but I’m getting ready to get off work, so I guess I’ll soon find out!

It was then that I slid a Gospel tract across the counter in his direction and said,

Well, here’s one way God’s working in your life.  Let me give you this to read as you go home.

Again, he said, “WHAT?!!  The man wasn’t hard of hearing, only resistant to my words.  I repeated my statement.  He looked at the tract that explains how Jesus bridged the gap between sinful man and a holy God, and said,

Oh, No!  I don’t want that!

He then began to walk away.  I have never asked this before but I asked him why he didn’t want it, to which he replied,

“I’m not into that!”

He stood looking at me, and I at him and I gently said, “I’m sorry.  One day you will be.”

I picked up my purchases and left the store, trembling inside – part out of nervousness, and a great deal because I know if that man doesn’t turn to Christ, he will spend eternity regretting that he had the chance to trust Him.

Please know that I don’t share this to make it look like I’m the avid soul winner.  This is probably the weakest part of my Christian life.  I miss so many opportunities – there was even another open door a bit later that I missed and had to ask God to forgive me for.  My point in these stories is that there are two kinds of witnessing that we take part in as believers.

  1. The first comes from walking in the Spirit so that His light will shine.
  2. The other is the vocal, stepping out of our comfort zone kind.

They are both needed. They are both necessary.  Everywhere we go, we must guard our tongues that they don’t “betray” our testimony as a believer.  Our speech and our conduct should point to the fact that we are Christ’s disciples.  Everywhere we go we must be looking, asking the Spirit of God to prompt us so we can speak up and reach out to that individual He has put in our path.

The other point to be made is that there are also two responses – neither of which we are responsible for!

  1. The one person rejoices in your testimony because:
    1. They are also a believer
    2. They need the Gospel and are ready to be saved!
It’s not because of us!  It’s all of the Spirit of God working in us.  He gets the glory!
  2. The other rejects the Truth.  They scoff.  They laugh.  They refuse.
It’s not up to us to convince them – the Spirit of God does that work, too.  We must just be faithful and obedient.

Another reminder is that you can never judge a man’s need by the external. God sees their heart!

Have you let your light shine wherever you go?  Are you looking for the opportunities to share the Gospel with your mouth?  Jesus left us here after we were saved so that we could be witness to others and share the eternal Truth that God loves them and desires that they are saved!

Let’s not be satisfied going to heaven alone – let’s take others with us!

Spring Storm Warning

spring-storm

Winter in the south is kind of funny to northerners.  When we get even a forecast of snow, meetings are cancelled, schools are shut down, grocery stores are emptied and everyone pulls into their home for fear of having to drive on the slippery precipitation.

Yesterday was a first for me with another kind of storm – an early spring storm with high winds and strong rain.  I don’t mean that I’ve never been in it, of course I have, but the new situation came when I heard schools were having early dismissal, ball games had been rescheduled, and folks were sending out the, “be careful out there!” messages on Facebook.  I’m as cautious with spring storms as anyone, after living through a tornado that hit our home when I was a teenager, but it seemed a little “over the top” to go to such extremes when there was yet a tornado warning, much less a watch.  I was kind of like,
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Whatever.”

To a meteorologist or someone who keeps a constant check on the weather app up on their phone, my casual approach to the weather would probably seem foolish.  I don’t mean to be, but it doesn’t seem like there’s a real threat.

It’s made me wonder if a person who hasn’t received Christ as their Savior has the same type of response when they hear folks say that the Lord Jesus said He’s coming back in the rapture,  and those that have not trusted Him as Savior will go through a horrible time of tribulation.  Do they look around them and see the calm, watch  their days and weeks go by as normal as the last years have, and say,

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever.”?

I’m afraid that’s probably the way Satan lures them into his lies.
“Come on,” he says, “Your grandmother said Jesus was going to come back, and look, it hasn’t happened yet!  Live your life the way you want, and don’t listen to those fanatics!”

More sure than the bread shelves clearing out in a Tennessee snow storm, the Lord made a promise that He will return to gather the Christians in the air and take them to heaven, and it will happen! Then those that are left will go through seven years of tribulation – worse than anything this world has ever known.  There will be some that are saved during that time, but they will suffer great persecution as a result.

It doesn’t have to mean you, my friend.  Turn to Christ and receive Him and the suffering He endured on the cross for your sins so that you could be forgiven.  Tell Him you believe – confess your sin and your need of a Savior.  Turn from anything you are trusting in to get you to heaven – good works, religion, your own merit, and trust Christ alone.  Not only will you be safe from the tribulation and an eternity of suffering in hell, you will begin the most wonderful relationship with the One who loves you and died for you.

The wind is really kicking up outside as I write. I think I’d better check my weather app and keep an eye on the brewing storm – it really could happen as they have warned.  I know I’ll be thankful I heeded the alarms.

I pray you have listened to the the Scripture’s warning – it will happen as the Lord said, and it could happen today.  Are you ready?

Lovingly,
