Spring Growth

The highlights of my week at a glance…

Last week began with a great day at Biltmore.  We enjoyed seeing the gardens beginning to pop out in bloom!!

The week ended by getting to attend my first Prayer Advance in Roanoke,Virginia.  It’s not a retreat – it’s an advance – advance in spiritual growth, in prayer, in study of the Word.  It was exhausting, not just because we were on the go, but because we were doing spiritual battle on our knees!  I attended with these ladies…

My husband drove us there in our church van.  What a servant he is!  He carted us all over the place; willingly took his days to just serve us.  Here he is giving a testimony of what the Men’s Prayer Advance has meant in his life…

Carol Trahan was one of the speakers.  She’s become a special friend of mine.  I love her heart for the Lord and His Word.  She is full of Scripture!  What a conviction that is to my own heart!  Her sessions were so powerful and life-changing!

I’m excited to say that she’s speaking at our church’ ladies’ retreat this coming September 9, 10th!  Mark it on your calendar and join us!!!

I got to join these dear friends in prayer as we sought the Lord’s cleansing and freedom from the bondage of bitterness.  What a blessing to be free!!!

We had some fun times at this little place – Elderberry’s.  It was a sandwich and Smoothie shop.  When we had breaks for meals, our conversations always turned to what God was doing in our hearts in the sessions.  Wow!  What a blessing!!!

I believe there were close to 500 ladies at this event!!  What sweet times of worship we shared together.

There were many times to stop and pray together for special needs.

Not only was there spring growth at Biltmore – we had spring growth in our spiritual lives!  God is so good to allow us times like this.  My heart needed it!  God answered prayer in so many ways – while on the way, while there, and as we got home.  We continue to seek His face as we “pray Big!”  There’s nothing too hard for our God!

Are you afraid to pray about those “big requests?”  We have a big God!  Trust Him for the God-sized tasks.  Ask a friend to pray with you and keep praying until He answers.  Could I encourage you to try the CPR that we used as we prayed?

C – Confess – Ask God to reveal any sin in your life.  Be still before Him and let His Spirit point out hidden places where you are guilty before Him.

P – Praise -Praise Him for who He is!  Praise His attributes.  Thank Him for His blessings.

R – Request – Now bring Him your requests with a thankful heart for what He alone can do!

Has anyone else attended a Prayer Advance?  How did it change you?

I Remember

I worry about myself sometimes!

“Where are my keys?”

“Who was I supposed to email today?”

“What was it that I wanted to pick up at the store on my way home?”

There is a command in Scripture to do some purposeful remembering about something far more important than keys and groceries – we’re to be remember the cross:

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

I’ve heard these verses read many times as I’ve taken communion at church, and I heard them again this past Sunday as we remembered the Lord’s death.  The bread was distributed, then a prayer was spoken, thanking Christ for being our sacrifice.

I took the bread and put it in my mouth.  As my teeth bit down into the small wafer, the words, “This is my body, broken for you” rang in my ears.  Just as my teeth were grinding that bread into tiny pieces, once again, I was remembered that it was for me and because of me that Christ suffered.  I put Him there.  It was my sin.  I caused the pain.  I nailed Him there as surely as I was now grinding that wafer into little bits.  My heart wrenched with the thought of my wickedness and His sacrifice!

How thankful I am for the reminder of Christ’s suffering that our monthly communion time brings. To sit in my seat and take of the bread and the cup is to remember that:

  • Christ died for individuals – you and me.
  • Just as I received Him as my Savior, I must personally keep a clean heart – before partaking of the bread and cup, and every day in between.
  • My sin put Him there.
  • He suffered untold pain and agony.
  • I’m preaching the message that I’ve been saved, and He is coming again every time I take comunion!

A personal message.  A personal remembrance.  A personal Savior.

Thank you, Lord, for making The Lord’s Table a command for believers, so we would go back to the cross.  Thank you, dear Jesus for dying for me.  I remember.

Have you taken a heart-felt trip back to the cross to remember what He did for you?

The Real Reason for Supper

supper table 1

All this week we’re going to talk about a subject dear to my heart – the Supper table.  From the why’s to the who, and the how – we’re going to discuss it all!  If you have any questions or comments about things you’d like to hear about, please let me know in a comment here!  Let’s get started today with the why of supper!

My husband was gone for a few days last week and I missed him greatly!  On the day of his return, I wanted to make a nice supper for him, even though it would be a little later than we normally eat.  I knew he wouldn’t have stopped for anything, and he’d be hungry!

I could have just warmed up soup or made sandwiches, but I wanted the meal to communicate something to him – I missed him.  I was thinking of him.  He was worth the effort it took to prepare a nice meal.  Supper is more than just filling our family’s bellies.  It’s about letting them know that we care for them.  It’s about taking the time to sit at the table and chat.  It involves reaching across the table for their heart – not just the bowl of mashed potatoes!  So this is why it was important to me to make a nice supper for my husband’s homecoming!  I had a message to share!

Here was my menu:

Short Ribs
Wild Rice Mushroom Bake
Parmesan Roasted Broccoli
Parkerhouse Rolls
Ginger Cookies

I wanted the ribs to be really tender, so I did them in my pressure cooker.  It only took 15 minutes – which is incredible!  Because I was using my oven for the rice dish, it made it easier for me to cook them this way.  I followed these instructions.

We love broccoli, and though I usually just steam it, I thought I’d try roasting it.  I used Ina Garten’s recipe with Parmesan Cheese and garlic.  Roasting it  gives it a different kind of texture – a little crispier than steamed, but it was good!

Parmesan Roasted Broccoli

4 to 5 pounds broccoli
4 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
Good olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons julienned fresh basil leaves (about 12 leaves)
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Cut the broccoli florets from the thick stalks, leaving an inch or two of stalk attached to the florets, discarding the rest of the stalks. Cut the larger pieces through the base of the head with a small knife, pulling the florets apart. You should have about 8 cups of florets. Place the broccoli florets on a sheet pan large enough to hold them in a single layer. Toss the garlic on the broccoli and drizzle with 5 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, until crisp-tender and the tips of some of the florets are browned.

Remove the broccoli from the oven and immediately toss with 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, the lemon zest, lemon juice, pine nuts, Parmesan, and basil. Serve hot.

The Rice & Mushroom Bake was a nice change from potatoes.  This is an old recipe my mom shared with me years ago.  It makes a lot – so I have some in my freezer for another day.  It’s creamy and delicious.

Rice bake

Wild Rice Mushroom Bake

Saute one onion and cup of celery in a half stick of butter.  Add 2 cups of beef broth, one cup of sliced fresh mushrooms and a box of Uncle Ben’s Rice.  Bake 45 minutes @ 350 degrees in covered dish.  Uncover and bake 15 minutes longer.

We don’t often have dessert on a weeknight, but you have to make something special for a homecoming meal!  The Ginger cookies are his favorite and I’ve shared them here.  I bake the large size for 11 minutes and it makes them just soft enough to be perfect with a glass of milk or cup of coffee!

I encourage you to think about what your meals are communicating to your family.  No matter if it’s you and your children, you and your husband, or a whole table full of people.  Make your supper meal an occasion – not just food.  You’re making memories around that table, so make them delicious and special!

Object Lesson About Why Jesus Died

I like spring birds, bunnies and eggs as much as the next person, but when it comes to explaining the true meaning of Easter and why Jesus came, all the “cutsie” objects I just mentioned, are just that.  We need to make sure children understand what Easter is all about.

If you need a jaw-dropping illustration for children of what Christ did for us on the cross, you’ve got to see this great object lesson.

When I did this for Bible club the children asked to see it again and again!  It is a great picture of the meaning of the cross, isn’t it?

With whom could you share this Gospel object lesson?

Stay refreshed,

List from SouthernMelle.com

March is a great time to begin to refresh your home for spring.  After a house has been closed up for the winter, it needs some deep cleaning, purging and refreshing. Fireplaces create grime on the inside windows, heat ducts create dust and people create clutter!  I started in this week with windows and was amazed at how dirty they were!  It made me determined to get things really clean again.  How about you?  Are you in the same  cleaning mode?

If you need help with what you might need to do, I’ve gathered some great lists I found on the Internet.  Find one that suits your home and needs, then print it off and work at it a little at a time so you won’t feel overwhelmed.  Give yourself a month to get it done. You might even make a target “finish” date and put a reminder on your calendar.
