How Do We Have a Hot Heart for God?

I am going through one of my favorite books…again.  A Woman After God’s Own Heart, by Elizabeth George.  When I was a young mom, I began reading this book every other year because I found it so helpful for growth in every area of my life!
Now I have the blessing of going through it with a woman who is in the same stage of life as when I began studying these truths that Elizabeth carefully penned.  These principles are life-changing.  For that reason, I thought it would be helpful for me to share highlights from the chapters as I review them. I won’t give all the details, but will share the important truths from each chapter. I pray that you’ll find them as helpful as I have over these years
.

Discipline – nothing great happens without it, and that includes spiritual growth.  We don’t grow by our grit, but by the steady commitment to being a woman who stays in God’s Word.  It cannot be a casual approach that studies when we have time, or only when there is a crisis.  But how do we have the discipline to be a woman after God’s heart?

We must choose God at every opportunity.

In Luke 10 we read the beloved story of Jesus visiting Mary and Martha. Mary chose to stop all activity and listen to the Lord. She ceased all other activity so she could do just that.

Perhaps we need to ask –

  1. What activity in my life is keeping me moving, anxious and unable to listen to the voice of the Lord in His Word?
  2. How do I find myself “interrupting Him” as Martha did?

It’s hard to hear and heed God’s Word without the discipline to sit still and listen. We must make the choice to choose the one thing that is needed. Then after we’ve given it to the Lord, He takes over.  He does the Psalm 32:8 thing ~

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

Each day, commit yourself afresh and anew to the Lord. Give Him your time, your possessions and your home – even if they are few, yourself – even as weak as you are, and ESPECIALLY because of your weakness!! Give him your husband and each child. Name each one. If you are not praying for your husband, who is? If you are not praying for your child, who will?

Andrew Murray said, God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.

Elizabeth says to “cultivate a hot heart for God.” Cultivate is to “Foster the growth of,” “To improve by labor.”To have a hot heart for God is to go against the culture of this world where we are only encouraged to “have it your way!”  But we have to do the work necessary to have that heart that is burning for Christ!

I’m always intrigued to read obituaries in the paper.  When I see that a Christian has died, I always wonder how they are described by their family.  “She loved the beach” “She loved to bake cakes for others.” “She was the best grandmother.” I pray I can be remembered as a woman who had a hot heart for the Lord!

How do you want to be remembered? If it’s your desire to be a woman who follows God and has a heart for Him, then you must make a daily decision to choose God’s ways, make a commitment of yourself to the Lord daily, and then a cultivate a heart of spiritual fervency.

What you’re doing with your life today is contributing to how you will be remembered. Make today count.

Easy Stromboli

We had a sandwich fellowship at church recently and I brought this Stromboli. It’s such a great “lunch-y” type food that is special, but super easy! I’m sharing this recipe again because it deserves to be highlighted!! If you have made this yet, I hope you’ll put it on your menu this week!

If you don’t own a Gooseberry Cookbook, I’m telling you, you’re missing some great recipes!  I have one that’s for entertaining that is full of promises of happy things!  There’s not a recipe in there that’s not been really good!!  I recently pulled it out looking for a quick and inexpensive lunch-type food I could serve for after church Sunday night.  I came across this recipe for Easy Stromboli and was sure I’d found a winner…I was right!

This is appropriately named Easy, becuase it was a cinch to make.  Frozen bread dough also makes the prep fast and inexpensive.  I bought a package of 5 loaves for a little over $4 at Kroger.  I also made it and baked it before we went to church.  Then when we got home, I just warmed it in the microwave.  It was a quick light meal to use to entertain friends!

Here’s a picture of the easy steps:

Easy Stromboli

1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
2 eggs, separated
2 T. oil
1 t. dried oregano
1 t. dried parsley
1/2 t. garlic powder
1/4 t. pepper
4-oz. pkg. sliced pepperoni – I used Turkey Pepperoni
8-oz. pkg. shredded mozzarella cheese
1 T. grated Parmesan cheese

Roll out bread dough into a 12×15-inch rectangle; set aside. Combine egg yolks, oil, oregano, parsley, garlic powder and pepper together; spread over dough. Arrange pepperoni and mozzarella cheese on top; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Roll up; place seam-side down on a baking sheet. Brush with egg whites; bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Makes 8 servings.

I served it with some pizza sauce alongside for dipping.  Yum!

Have you ever had Stromboli?  I’m not sure I’d had it before I made this, but it will definitely be on repeat from now on!

Springtime Dates

It’s warming up pretty consistently here in East Tennessee.  These are perfect opportunities to have a fun date with your spouse!  Need some ideas?  Here are a few fun ones to get you started:

bike riding
  1. Get outside and work in the yard together.  Clean up any leaves from fall.  Mow the grass, sweep the sidewalks and driveway.  See if you could use some new shrubbery.  Celebrate the beautiful yard with a Frosted Lemonade at Chick-Fil-A or an ice cream cone at Dairy Queen!
  2. Take a bike ride on one of the local trails.
  3. Go for a breakfast picnic.  Be aware of the morning dew and take a towel or blanket to sit on or wipe down the table.
  4. Take a hike on a mountain trail.
  5. Take a drive in the country with the windows down.
  6. Go to Lowe’s or any other paint store and pick out a color for a room in your house or a piece of furniture that needs some refreshing. Do the project together.
  7. Build a fire in the fire pit in the evening.
  8. Play a yard game like croquet, Frisbee, or badminton.
  9. Wash the car together.
  10. Go to the park and fly a kite.
  11. Sit outside and watch the sunset from your porch swing.
  12. Take a walk around the neighborhood hand in hand.
  13. Go to a local drive-in like Sonic and enjoy lunch in the car with the windows down.
  14. Go to yard sales and find items you need to make your porch inviting!
  15. Find a little town you’d like to spend the day investigating and have a whole day away shopping, having coffee, and just walking its streets.

There are some ideas to get you started!  What springtime dates have you planned?  Remember, most times together won’ just happen!  You have to be intentional!

Happy Spring Date night!

Your Purpose

Over and over again my heart goes to the word, purpose. Why does God save a soul and leave them on this earth, rather than take them to heaven? Because He has a purpose for each of us. We have a life to live that can be full and so blessed because of the God of our life IS our life!

What is it? What is your purpose?

It’s greater than just making it through the day so we can plop down somewhere and scroll, or fasten our eyes on a rectangular box and “chill” while we doze. That’s what a cat does!

For those who have trusted Christ as Savior, we have a soul that has been rescued from hell, and people all around us are without the hope of Christ. They need the Gospel!

Our purpose is to use what God has given us in the place where He has put us
to share the Gospel, disciple believers, to live out a full and fruitful life!

I look at Paul in Philippians one and see that he is in prison. His help came through the supply of the Spirit of Christ by the prayers of the people of God. He believed that no matter what happened, God would not cause him to be ashamed or turn against him. He was confident that he was in the center of God’s will. He wasn’t being punished by God. Christ would be magnified if he lived or died. Paul didn’t dictate how God would be glorified – he left that up to God.

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:20, 21

Where has the Lord put you? It’s no accident. Serve Him there.

What has God entrusted to you? What possessions? What talents? Use them for His glory.

Who has He placed around you? Spouse? Children? Neighbors? Use your voice to share the Gospel, encourage them with the Truth, and help bear their burdens.

You are alive and breathing today due to the kindness and the plan of God. You have a significant purpose that no one else could fill. Don’t waste a moment, but get up and ask God what you should do next. Watch how He will use your life if you simply recognize He has purpose for YOU!

Are you living out the purpose for which God has designed for your life? There’s no greater joy!
