How To Ruin the Trip of a Lifetime or a Day At Home

Israel flight 2.jpg

This time last year I was on a 15-day trip to Israel!  This was my second time to have the privilege of going, so I knew what was in store…well, sort of.

Our first trip to the Holy Land was great for the most part.  It did involve rain…lots of it and some pretty cold weather, oh and also a night in a room with little heat.  I loved being there, and was so thankful for the opportunity to see where my Savior lived and ministered and died for me.  However, I wasn’t sure I’d ever want to make the trip again.

  • The flight over is pretty long and grueling.
  • The weather was nasty at times.
  • It’s an expensive trip.
  • Been there, done that.

Then my husband got the wonderful idea to take some of our church people over as a group.  I hated for him to go “alone,” so, I knew “his” trip back meant “our” trip back. I prayed about whether or not to go along the second time. Then all my reasons for not going again began to be crossed off the list.

  • The flight over is pretty long and grueling. We were traveling with a bunch of our dear friends! Even the flight would be fun!
  • The weather was nasty at times. The weather prediction was pretty fabulous!
  • It’s an expensive trip. My husband’s trip was paid because he was the leader of the group. The Lord provided my expenses as we saved.
  • Been there, done that. A second trip would bring new, greater understandings.

Spite all those answers, I worried.  I worried about the safety of the flight.  I worried we might not come home.  I worried about traveling home on Inauguration day and protesters…on and on my anxious thoughts went. Finally one day the Lord convicted me of this sin of worry.  I was not trusting Him.  I confessed and asked others to whom I had spilled my fretting to forgive me.  I was now ready to travel!

We prayed much, packed our suitcases to bulging, and headed to Israel!  That trip was one of the best experiences of my life!  It was FULL of blessings – beautiful weather, floating in the Dead Sea, luxurious hotels, a perfect boat ride on the Sea of Galilee and getting to do it all with my husband, son-in-law and dear friends.  My prayer partners/friends and I prayed on the Sea of Galilee, in the Mount of Olives, at the Garden Tomb and the Road to Emmaus.  We laughed.  We cried.  We read God’s Word and marked up our Bibles.  We sang. We ate falafel. We shopped.  We snapped hundreds of pictures and we came home with our hearts so full we thought they would burst.

But that trip was nearly ruined.

How?

Simply by my worry.

Those worries could’ve cause me to ditch it all and stay home and miss those blessings!  Thank the Lord I didn’t carry it to that extreme.  But even continued fretting would’ve kept me from enjoying every minute while I was there.

I’m grateful for the turning point before we left when I let it go.  It kept me from ruining it all.

None of my fears happened.

None of them!

Have you ever worried about something so much that it changed your plans, or you took the matter into your own hands instead of making it a matter of serious prayer? Have you ever worried so much that it overcame your thoughts during the day and into the night?  It might have been a relatively minor situation, but it plagued you.

Little worries can turn into big mistakes when we take over.

Little worries can ruin big plans.

Little worries can rob us of today’s giant blessings.

But this will only happen if we allow it!

The Lord commands us instead ~

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Reign in your worries and pray about them, giving every detail to the Lord Who is in control of every inch, every second, every detail of it!  Pray rather than letting worry ruin the trip of a lifetime or a simple day at home!

What worry is taking over your thoughts?  What imaginations are running wild in your heart? Will you allow it to ruin the blessing of a lifetime or even this day?  It’s your choice.

Wonderful, Quick Breadsticks

Bread.  It is the sustenance of life.  Winter soups need breadsticks for dipping.  Pasta needs a breadstick for sopping up sauce, and Sunday roasts need one to mop up gravy.  Am I right?

I’m always on the search for a better roll, fluffier biscuit or quicker breadstick.  One day this winter when I was making my Cheese Ravioli with Tomatoes, I found this recipe on Pinterest, at Genius Kitchen and had to give it a try because the reviews were fabulous.  I halved the recipe and it was perfect for a couple of meals.  Oh, these are good.  These are fast.  These need to be in your recipe file!

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

  1. Make dough using your favorite method- bread machine, mixer or by hand.
  2. Roll out into a 10×12 inch rectangle.
  3. Cut into strips about 3/4 inch wide.
  4. Give each strip a twist and place on a greased cookie sheet.
  5. Let rise for at least 20 minutes or more if you have time.
  6. Bake at 375 for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Brush with butter and sprinkle with garlic salt and Parmesan cheese.

The next time you make anything that has sauce of any kind, you need to whip this recipe up.  I’m ditching every other breadstick recipe and keeping this one.  You should too!

What kind of meal would you make these breadsticks to accompany?  Are you a “dipper?”

2018 Is Going To Be a “Wow” Year!

sunrise countrylife a.jpg

One day this past week I had one of those “Wow!” moments when I realized that I’m going to be celebrating a significant birthday this year!  It was more of a “Are you kidding me?!” kind of wow, rather than a “hurrah!” one, but it made my eyebrows lift and my jaw drop!

I had another one of those “Wow!” moments today when I realized that this blog will celebrate it’s Tenth Anniversary in August! With over 2,300 posts under its belt, I’m amazed at what God has done, via my desire to begin on this blogging journey in 2008!

I love looking into the stats to see what posts were read the most.  Here are some of them from the last year:

Family Friday
Why I Choose Not To Drink Alcohol
That’s What Friends Are For
Ten Things This Mom Would Do Again
My New Heroes
How To Tell If a Child Is Ready To Be Saved
Refresh Your Pastor
Help Your Husband Live Joyfully With You
Meal Planning for Family Vacation
Fall Favorite Foods
Being Intentionally Thankful
Hot Chocolate Mug Cake

I wouldn’t be doing this if no one was interested in reading, and I want to thank each of you who read, comment and encourage me so often.  This has been a great writing outlet, a tool as a ministry to women, and an answer to prayer.  When I asked the Lord to open doors for me to minister to women, this was one avenue that He brought to my mind.  I’ve loved it and have poured my heart into each post, video and even picture attached.

I am truly overwhelmed when I meet people and they tell me they read my blog.  Thank you for spending your valuable time to consider my simple thoughts.  I so enjoy meeting those of you that are strangers to me – either in person or via your comments.  Many of your names are in my prayer journal, as you’ve asked me to pray for you or your family.  I pray for lost husbands, children, grandchildren, moms who are widows, and some women who are desiring to bear a child.  The needs are many, but my God is able, and it is my blessing to help carry your burden!

Thanks again for reading!

That being said, I’d like to ask a few questions in closing, regarding my blog.

  1. What are the posts/subjects you enjoy most here on RefreshHer?
  2. What would you like to see more of in the future?  I write on refreshing your heart, home and life, so I do want to stick to those categories.
  3. If you’re married and could attend a marriage session for women, what would you appreciate hearing that would help you most in your relationship with your husband?

If you want to remain anonymous, you can answer those questions in an email at refreshherblog@gmail.com  .

Thank in advance for your help!

I pray your weekend is full of encouragement and refreshment as you attend a Bible preaching church!

How To Have a Strong Prayer Life When It Seems So Hard

I won’t lie – pastors get down – really down when the attendance falls off on the night a Prayer Meeting is scheduled.  It happens often.  You announce you’re going to gather just to pray, and the crowd thins as though the fire alarm had just gone off.  My husband will get in the car and I know what question is coming my way…

Why won’t people gather to pray?”

I’ve been thinking about that and I’d like to address that question with three answers.  How about watching this video and tell me if you agree?

What keeps you from praying?  What makes it difficult to be consistent and fervent? Do you agree with the reasons I stated in the video?  Is your prayer life all it could be, or do you need to make some changes?

The download of my prayer journal is still available to anyone who will contact me via the email on my contact page.

Let’s stay on our knees, friends.  God answers the prayer of the righteous! Proverbs 15:29

Turn Your Household Jobs into Joy!

swiffer cover a.jpg

We often view household chores like a fire breathing dragon waiting to be slain. They’re breathing down our necks and we would like to run, but we know that killing that beast is necessary and needed. I’d like to give you a different perspective of those tasks, because God created our work at home (and outside our home) to be done for His glory. You see, with just one little change, we turn the word

JOB

into

JOY!

So, too, we could make just one little change in our household work and turn it into a joy, rather than a drudgery.

What picture would give us a right view of dusting, laundry, washing dishes and mopping the floor?  How about an artist standing before his canvas!  Let me tell you why.

  • An artist has to have an end in mind.  He has to know what he’s going to have when he’s finished!  Is it a painting of a sea, the mountains or a vast valley?  Is it to be a portrait?
    • As workers, we need to know what our goals are.  What do we want to have accomplished in the end?
  • An artist has to have the right tools.  The right paint brush can put leaves on a tree with a simple stroke, or cover the canvas with the background color needed for a sunset.
    • As workers, we need the right tools to accomplish each job.  It will make it easier and more effective!
  • An artist has to have a time table to complete the work.  He may have a time limit because of the person for whom the work is to be done.  He may have time limits because of the mediums with which he is working.  Clay hardens!  Acrylic paints dry quickly!
    • As workers, we should use our minutes wisely, not wasting time by making the work more difficult, or by distractions.

So, artist, let’s think about our housework and how we can apply these principles!

  1. Tasks
    1. Each day have a plan as to what needs to be done.  Don’t try to do it all in one day.
    2. Divide the weekly chores into the days of the week.
    3. Write down what you need to do.
For daily chores, like beds being made and dishes washed and put away, you may want to write that into your goals as well, but not necessarily each day unless it’s not a habit yet.  If you need to get into that habit, write it each day!
Know what your desire is – should the beds be made right after rising?  Should the dinner dishes be put away before you head to bed?  Seeing chores written down will help you to accomplish them, and then have the satisfaction of checking them off!
  2. Tools
    1. Dusting – Don’t use the nastiest rag you have in the house. Use a cloth you’ll want to see, like a swiffer duster, or a microfiber cloth to dust your home.  Get an extension duster to use on the ceiling fans and behind the headboard of the beds.
Invest in a dusting spray.  I love the Pledge multi-surface anti-bacterial cleaner. multi surface everyday cleaner antibacterial
It helps pick up the dust and it leaves everything smelling fresh and clean!
    2. Mopping –  Swiffer mops are my favorite.  I made my own covers for dry mopping and I can wash them and reuse them!  But I do buy the Swiffer brand for wet mopping.  They, too, make the house smell nice and clean!
    3. Cleaning Windows and mirrors and bathrooms – Put your mirror/window cleaner as well as your bathroom cleaners in pretty little spray bottles from the Dollar Tree.  I have several – one in each bathroom, and one in the kitchen ready for use!
I use my own recipe for windows and mirrors – 50% water 50% white vinegar and a few drops of Dawn Dish Soap.  Shake it up and spray it on!  It works great and doesn’t leave streaks!
    4. A cleaning caddy can carry all your supplies without you having to run from room to room gathering the needed cleaning sprays and cloths. You can buy something similar at the Dollar Tree.
      Clear Tote Caddy - 18
  3. Time
You don’t have to spend hours cleaning!  As a matter of a fact, you could spend less than 30 minutes a day and get more accomplished than you can imagine, but you have to be diligent.  Here’s how:

    1. Set a timer.  Play a game with yourself (sounds silly, but this works wonders!).  Set a goal to try to accomplish a,b,and c before the timer goes off in, let’s say, 15 or 30 minutes.  It’s amazing what you can accomplish in a short amount of time!
    2. Set aside distractions.  Put your phone in another room, or on vibrate and vow not to touch it until you’re finished!  Turn the television off.  Focus on the work at hand.
    3. Do the least liked job first!  You hate cleaning the oven, but it got splattered from the roasting chicken?  Do it first.  Then you can move on to the easier jobs!

With these three simple ideas, you can complete that work like an artist and you’ll end up with the beauty of a home that no painting could capture!  The audience will be your family and friends.  There’s no embarrassment of people seeing an unfinished project on the easel!  Oh, and the

A JOB can be turned into a JOY
with just one little change.

What change do you need to make in your housework to change it into a joy?
