How to Stop Wifely Christmas Grumbles

wp-1481141126475.png

In a favorite episode of Andy Griffith, Aunt Bea goes out of town for a few days.  While she’s away, Andy and Opie TRASH the house while living their bachelor days in her absence.  When Andy tries to make Opie understand that their mess might be upsetting to Aunt Bea, Opie recalls the words he’s heard his great aunt say, and  what he thought she might say when she returns to find the disaster –

Land sakes alive!  Look at this mess; just look at it!  If it weren’t for me, this house wouldn’t be fit to live in!

Most wives can probably relate in some way to that scenario.  We dust, shine, mop, vacuum, and pick up – only to have to do it all again after the family has “lived” in it for a day!

But then we add into our busy worlds one word – HOLIDAYS -and we find ourselves with even more responsibilities than Dollywood has Christmas lights!  It can be really easy to fall into the “Aunt Bea” mode and mumble under our breath and complain about the holiday tasks that fall into our already full laps.

Our mumbling might include statements like:

I have to shop for the gifts, purchase the gifts and wrap them.

If I don’t schedule a time for our annual Christmas card picture, it never would happen!  Then I have to address the cards, seal them. and get them to the Post office.

I have eight different kinds of cookies to bake because everyone will expect them, and of course no one helps make them or clean up the mess, but they sure are there to eat them!

Then, of course, I have to buy the gifts and wrap the gifts!

If I left the tree decorating to my family it never would get done either!

Let’s face it – the whole Christmas celebration is up to me and I’m about worn out!!!!

It’s about that time that you can hear, instead of words, the honking sound, like Snoopy’s teacher:

No one wants to listen because of the terrible “sqwaking” that’s coming from our lips.

How do I know?

I’ve been there.

I’ve sqwaked.”

I’ve complained.

I was wrong.

Okay, so much of the doing of Christmas is up to us as the female in the home, but the attitude and heart with which it is done can make it either sweet or spoiled. How might we spoil it?

  1. Negative talk about our husband.  This is simply wrong.  He is the head of the home and is to be honored. Eph 5:33  Would we rather take on that responsibility?  I wouldn’t!  That’s a load every single day – not just at Christmas.  Let’s let our husband lead, and let’s you and I help make him the best leader by lending a hand with all our feminine ways.  That includes:
  • Planning
  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Purchasing
  • Decorating
  • Wrapping

2.  Not doing our work to glorify God.  I Cor. 10:31  If we work ourselves to death and do it with a wrong attitude we shouldn’t be expected to be rewarded in heaven.  We got our reward – everyone’s pity (and maybe their distance from us, too!).  Let’s do all we do as unto the Lord.  Oh, that we would make our efforts like the precious gifts brought to the Christ child by the wise kings!

3.  Having an ungrateful heart.  A thankful spirit will be grateful for the:

  • Family we have to serve – I know some wives who have gone to heaven this past year.  Their families will be missing them this Christmas.  You and I are here; let’s make our families glad!
  • Health with which we can serve – This can be taken in an instant.  Be thankful you can walk, work, and think!
  • Provision for the cards, gifts and foods to prepare – Everything we have is a gift from God, and we have far more than most!
  • Reason we are celebrating!!!  Don’t lose the focus of this celebration; it’s all about Christ!

Maybe we need to do as I suggested yesterday and simplify our Christmas; make it a little easier on ourselves!  Our families would probably be fine with a little less decor, baked goods and gifts if it would mean we are sweeter and more fun to be near!

Have you been muttering under your breath?  Ask God to forgive you, then when you get up off your knees, ask your family’s forgiveness, too.  Start the day over with

  1. No more husband bashing,
  2. Work that glorifies God.
  3. A thankful heart.

Watch and  see what a difference it will make in your Christmas preparations!

What’s Inside my OCC Box?

OCC Box 1.jpg

I have heard for many years about the boxes sent to children at Christmas time, but never knew how I could get involved.  However, this year my church provided all the information, as well as the boxes, so that we could join in on this great outreach.

I learned that you can choose the gender and the age range of the child for whom you send a box.  I chose a girl between 5-9 and I had so much fun purchasing items to fill our box to the brim!  I thought you might enjoy seeing what we put in our box.

occ-box

  1.  A “”Wow” item as they call it – A soft doll
  2. Stuffed bear
  3. Personal items –
    1. Hello Kitty Toothbrush with cover
    2. Toothpaste
    3. Combs
    4. Head bands and pony tail bands
  4. Fun item – Coloring book and crayons
  5. Sun glasses
  6. Holiday erasers
  7. Kleenexes

Now that I know what they allow and don’t allow, I can purchase items throughout the year and be a little more prepared next Christmas.  The boxes are being collected this coming Sunday.  I understand that Hobby Lobby is also participating in this.  You may still be able to purchase a clear box from them if you can’t get your hands on a OCC provided box.

The best thing about these boxes is that each child will hear the Gospel and then have an opportunity for follow-up discipleship classes.  It’s not just a good deed – it’s a chance to share the Good News!  There’s no better gift than that!

Who else is participating?  What did you include in your box?

Let’s send the Good news!

A Christmas Evening to Remember

Yesterday I told you about getting to go to Asheville, NC to hear a concert by a converted Jew, Marty Goetz.  Below are pictures of that magical night at The Cove.  The decorations were so beautiful, and they were everywhere!

The snow we experienced was our first of the season – right on top of the mountain we were crossing.  It was festive and beautiful…and a little scary!  The Lord protected us, however, and we enjoyed its addition to this Christmas-y night!

It was a blessing to bump into and meet Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and tell her what a blessing her ministry has been to me!

We have been blessed to attend several activities this month that have really allowed us time to worship and praise our Savior that was born that we might live.

How have you worshiped this Christmas?

The Ultimate Gift To Give

If you’re still struggling with gift ideas for some of the people on your Christmas list, I have a suggestion for you! It’s something I received in October from the ladies of my church –

  • It’s something I need today, but it will benefit me and others for eternity.
  • The size was extra large, but it fits perfectly.
  • It’s applicable for today, but it’s also perpetual.
  • It’s so practical, but it is more precious than anything money could buy.

What is it? Maybe you’ve figured it out?

Prayer.

One lady from my church is praying for me every day. They were given specific requests to pray on “their” day. Let me share an example of how I’ve recently seen God answer their prayers.

151220_204600_collage-1.jpg

Last Friday the prayer request was, “Pray that God will bring godly friends and encouragers to her, to strengthen her for the ministry and to provide meaningful fellowship, accountability and times of rest.” On that day:

  1. My husband and I had been invited to go to a Christmas concert in Asheville, sung by a Messianic Jew. The music was uplifting and worshipful.

  2. We rode in our church van with eight other friends from church, enjoying fellowship and encouragement all the way there and back.

  3. While at the concert, I saw that Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth from Revive Our Hearts, was also in the relatively small crowd. After the concert, I made my way to her so that I might thank her for the impact her radio ministry has had on my life. That was such a blessing!

Do you see how those prayers were answered on that very day?! Not every prayer is answered in that way, but it was so wonderful when a friend (who happens to be praying for me every single day) reminded me of what the prayer request was for that day, and that God had answered!

I am covered by these dear ladies every single day at the Throne of God. I cannot tell you what that means to me. I need it. I am desperate for it. I am thankful to have it. What better gift could they give?

You might consider compiling a list for someone and telling them how you will pray for them each day for 31 days (or the whole year). Revive our Hearts has several lists you could choose – one for your husband, children, pastor, or pastor’s wife.

Daily,

Detailed,

Definitive prayer.

It’s a gift that could really touch someone’s heart and change their life.

James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Whom could you bless this Christmas with the gift of your prayers?

With love,

Christmas Cookie Baking With Children Simplified

Christmas cookies.jpgIf you haven’t baked sugar cookies with your little children yet because you kind of dread the huge mess it’s going to make, let me give you a couple tips that will ease the whole process.

  1. If you’re short on time, or if your kids are pretty young, you might want to go ahead and roll and cut out the cookies and have them already on a baking sheet. Then all they have to do is add the sprinkles and colored sugars.1217151441.jpg
  2. What? Oh, sprinkles and colored sugars will go flying everywhere? If your sprinkles are in a round tub, rather than a one with a shaker top, clean out a Parmesan Cheese jar that has the shaker lid, then pour your sprinkles into it.  You can shake the decorations out easily and also control the amount much better than using your fingers or pouring them from the tub!
  3. You could also use a jar like this, but most of us don’t have several of those just empty to use for sugar and sprinkles, so the tip in the video would be a good and also inexpensive alternative.
  4. You might want to lay a plastic table cloth or a sheet on the floor under the area where they’ll be decorating, if you don’t want to have sprinkles to sweep up.

There’s just nothing any more fun to do with children at Christmas than to bake with them. As they age, gradually give them more and more responsibility with the process. One day they’ll bring you hot cookies that you never had to help with!

Yesterday I had my two Bible Club children over and they each decorated a dozen star-shaped sugar cookies. I had also made some tiny gingerbread men before they came. After telling them the story about the three wise men following the star to the Christ child, they enjoyed a snack of three tiny gingerbread men and a star. Cameron cracked us up when he dropped a gingerbread man into his glass of milk and said, “My wise man jumped in the swimming pool!” I love that little guy!

Happy baking, friends!

Stay refreshed!
